"Yo Bro, what's your name? What's your Job?"
Cade the most competitive and giddy shot out before I had even returned to my seat, he was to engrossed in talking himself up to Cole now that he knew he was a hero, to hear anything that was said about me at the time of my own awakening.
"Villager, Carter." I calmly spoke out, but the three all hitched their breath after hearing my succint words.
Then Cade face twisted a little almost ugly, I'd say. It was a face i hadnt seen him ever pull in all our years of living and fighting together, "Pfffttt that's so fitting, you who thought you were the best of us, and our leader was actually such trash!"
"To think I actually liked you like that once."
"What an embarrassment for the family."
In an instant that felt like I was reading the beginning of one of that guys revenge novels all three of my siblings who'd grown up with me and were closer than friends quickly turned to insulting me upon finding out about their own high status and my own regular one.
Their voices were not quiet, and their insults to me, were heard by all the villagers and farmers present, an insult to the very home that had raised them.
But they were nobles, and powerful figures of the church and nation now, who cared what a bunch of nobodies who could do nothing more than glare at them, or call them names behind their backs.
"But guys cmon it's still me, we'll go on to form an adventurer party and become the greatest in the world just like we planned."
This wasn't my plan, but Cole and Cade's who lusted after glory to overwrite the shame of being orphans. Not like i expected them to actually take me on, since as their big brother, i assumed they would refuse to protect me but what they actually said was far more negative and without any concern my own own wellbeing.
"Bah like we'd want to party with some useless trash like you!"
"Yeah!"
"I won't be able to sleep at night knowing trash like you is near enough to do unspeakable things to my body!"
What the hell where'd the innocent ten year olds go, also the hell are you talking about Alison? What could i do to your body or even want to do to my sister?
Since the ceremony was done, the three quickly fled the scene unwilling to be in my presence any longer but also unwilling to stay under the scrutinous glares of the adults still fuming about their earlier comments.
I on the other hand was nothing but one of the dregs remaining behind to apologize on behalf of my siblings while also congratulating the others on their successful awakenings, while receiving my own congratulations from the villagers i'd help over all these years.
This wasn't just for their sake, seeing how the three had reacted, I was sure to go home to a disaster.
The three had been given everything and perhaps that was where i had gone wrong, they hadnt truly earned their newfound jobs or positions. And they didnt know they only had them because of my own power, which took their already excessive egos to a whole new level, one that was far from the high and mighty that i thought them to have been before.
And I was right, just like one of those cliche things, when I returned to the orphanage all my clothes and things had been cut apart and tossed into a puddle of mud, my sword was missing, and one of the Sisters was crying inside when I got home not even caring about the loss of my things, but heading straight for her.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
"Sister, are you okay?"
As I entered and asked she still crying raised her head.
"Ah, yes don't worry your brothers and sister have decided to go to the city, I'm sorry I couldn't stop them from doing that to your things."
Sister who was like a mother to us was more betrayed than I was, as I looked around the orphanage, I found that the three had done far worse than simply destroying my things.
They all three secretly must've hated this place, they had robbed the orphanage of food, probably taking it to be their provisions when travelling to the city while also getting to eat well for a change, then taking out their years of frustration as they destroyed everything with, chairs, tables, and beds.
The only thing to survive their rampage was the building itself, and the cribs which housed the latest arrivals to the orphanage.
"Sniff, oh that's right what name did you get graced with?"
"My name is Carter."
"Nice to meet you Carter."
"Thank you Sister!"
Even as she endured this pain in her heart, she still shone through like a ray of sunshine.
Since I had undergone the awakening technically I was no longer allowed to remain within the building but the day was still young so I helped the Sister with cleaning up the mess made by those three.
Later the other sister and Mother arrived and joined us, the two heard about what Alison, Cole, and Cade had done and could only shake their heads in pity while bearing worried looks on their faces.
When night was falling i dug up a part of the bedroom floor, and pulled out a simple cloth wrapping, which jingled as i held it.
Before i left for the last time, i met with all three of them, the two sisters were crying again but this time tears of joy, while Mother was standing there trying desperately to maintain her composure and not cry.
But after i handed over the cloth satchel in my hand to her, she broke down after seeing the contents.
But before she could try to return the primitive bag of coins to me i had already turned round and walked out the door.
What i had provided her was my life saving, all the money they had ever given me for my allowance since i bought my first sword, plus a bit of extra that i had claimed off the bandit hero figuring his money should be used for heroic purposes just never finding the right reason until now.
Luckily it was already spring so sleeping outside wouldnt be the worst thing in the world just a little bit cold, though the clothes the sisters bought for me which i was still wearing were thick enough i would be as warm as if i had been wrapped in the thin blankets we normally used in the orphanage.
My night was spent sleeping under a tree surrounded by bushes, which acted as a natural shelter.
Knowledge that my newly assigned job hunter provided to me once more after switching out Villager which had served its purpose for me.
I'd have wanted to sleep one last time in the orphanage but it was against the rules, i was still an orphan, but no longer a child.
Even though i was only 10 years of age, that was enough for the people of this world to send me out into the world on my own.
The last thing i did before turning in for the night was review the tracks i had found during the evening.
After leaving the orphanage i had already switched my jobs back, finally feeling like my old self again, having lived for a month as a villager with all the benefits of a superior job vanishing, but now they were back.
And using the tracking skills i was able to find the trail those three left behind.
And after following the tracks for a while i had a pretty good idea just where they were heading.
From our village there were two different paths one could take.
The first was to head south, crossing over the border and going to the nearest city in another country a borderfort meant for their national defence, or north which was where i found their tracks headed.
Which led not to a city but a town.
Larger still than our village of a few hundred but still a far cry from the grand cities the merchants spoke of during their visits.
I had created the people who had set out into the world, if they in the end turned out to be just the same as the bandit hero, fallen into darkness then that would mean i would have to take care of the monsters i had created.
As sad as that thought made me feel, i could only go to sleep hoping and praying to the gods that what they had done was all an act to seperate themselves from the orphanage and myself for when they created enemies in the future all to protect us from those who might try to harm us to get to them.
