The next gate opened almost immediately.

Dean turned toward it, expecting another ordinary opponent, but the reaction from the audience was different this time. The cheering didn’t stop, but it changed into something more excited, with several voices rising above the others in anticipation.

Then a demon walked out.

He wasn’t some grotesque monster covered in spikes and dripping blood. At first glance, he almost looked human.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in dark leather armor that left his arms exposed.

Two black horns curved backward from his forehead, his eyes were a deep crimson, and a long, thin tail moved lazily behind him as he walked. A pair of short, curved blades hung from his waist.

The moment he entered the arena, Dean felt it. Like the energy that was coming from him was VERY different than the other opponents that he fought against before.

His aura was considerably stronger than the opponents before him. Not overwhelmingly so, but enough that Dean couldn’t dismiss him as he had the others.

The demon stopped in the center of the arena and looked directly at him.

"So you’re Decanus."

It was a classic saying at this point.

Dean adjusted his grip on the spear. "Seems everyone knows that name." he said and rolled his eyes.

The demon smiled and said "Hard not to. You’ve been causing quite a bit of noise in Aether...also in Nether."

A few laughs came from the audience.

Dean glanced toward the seats. Once again, he saw those same people. They weren’t merely watching anymore. Some were sitting at the edge of their seats, while others had gone completely still, their eyes locked onto the two fighters in the arena.

Someone had clearly told them he would be here.

The thought crossed Dean’s mind again.

"Who the fuck knows where I’m going to be?"

The announcer raised his staff.

"Fifth match! Decanus versus Varek of the Nether!"

The demon’s smile widened.

"Varek." he intruduced himself.

Dean nodded and said "Decanus."

"I know." Varek replied.

The bell rang and the second that happened Varek disappeared.

Dean’s eyes immediately followed the movement.

"Fast." he thought.

A blade came toward his neck. Dean twisted his body aside, barely avoiding it as the demon passed him, and thrust his spear toward Varek’s back. Varek managed to spin around and block.

"Clang!"

The impact pushed him several steps backward. His expression changed.

"So you can keep up." Varek said.

Dean didn’t answer. He attacked.

The spear moved forward in a straight thrust, but Varek knocked it aside with one blade and immediately countered with the other.

Dean blocked, then stepped backward as the demon’s foot slammed into his stomach. The kick actually moved him, sending him sliding several meters across the sand before he stopped himself.

The crowd erupted.

Varek didn’t give him time to recover. He rushed forward again, both blades moving rapidly as he attacked from alternating angles. Dean blocked the first, the second grazed his shoulder, and the third struck his spear hard enough to make his hands ache.

"He’s good." Dean thought instantly. His face changed. He was now smiling seriously for the first time since he joined this dungeon.

Varek wasn’t merely powerful. He knew how to fight.

Dean lowered his stance as another blade came toward his face.

He turned his spear sideways and caught the weapon against the shaft, then pushed it away and swung the other end toward Varek’s ribs.

The demon twisted out of the way, and Dean’s spear barely missed.

Varek grinned.

"Not bad." he said.

Dean frowned but his expression instantly changed and he said jokingly:

"You talk too much."

Varek laughed and attacked again.

This time, Dean met him head-on. Their weapons clashed repeatedly, the sound of metal striking metal echoing through the arena. Varek’s speed forced Dean to concentrate, and every time Dean found an opening, the demon managed to escape it.

Then Varek’s right blade cut across Dean’s side.

Dean felt the sting and looked down. A thin line of blood had appeared beneath his clothes.

Varek smiled.

"Got you." he said.

Dean looked back at him.

"Yeah." Dean replied.

His grip tightened around the spear.

"You did." he added to his words.

Something changed in that exact moment.

Dean stepped forward and with that Varek’s smile disappeared.

The next exchange lasted less than a second. Varek attacked first, but Dean didn’t retreat this time. He caught the demon’s wrist with the shaft of his spear, twisted his body, and drove his knee into Varek’s stomach.

The demon’s breath left him, and Dean followed with a strike across his chest that sent him stumbling backward.

Dean was already there.

He threw a thrust instantly.

Varek blocked it with not so easy.

Dean did another and Varek blocked again.

The third came from a different angle and struck his shoulder. Varek grunted and staggered, but Dean spun the spear and struck the back of his legs, dropping him to one knee.

He immediately tried to rise, but Dean drove the butt of the spear into his chest and sent him crashing onto his back.

The audience roared.

Varek rolled away and pushed himself up, breathing heavily. His expression had changed completely; the confidence was gone.

He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and looked at Dean.

"You’re stronger than the rumors said."

Dean raised his spear.

"It has been months since that happened, you know? We humans are greedy creatures. Now that I have chances to grow up fast, I am not going to stop."

When Dean said this the crowd went silent just for a moment.

Varek laughed despite himself.

Then his aura suddenly flared.

A dark red energy spread across his body, and the sand beneath his feet cracked. The audience reacted immediately.

"He’s using his demonic energy!"

"Varek!"

"Don’t lose now!"

Dean’s eyes narrowed.

"So he had been holding back." he thought.

It was good.

At least this one wasn’t going to end immediately.

Varek rushed forward.

This time, Dean couldn’t simply stand there and trade blows. The demon’s speed increased sharply, his blades leaving dark streaks through the air.

Dean blocked one strike, then another, but the third forced him to turn his body to avoid having his chest opened.

The fourth struck his spear hard enough to numb his hands.

Dean stepped backward and Varek pressed forward.

Another attack came toward him. Dean barely blocked it, and the impact made his arms ache.

Varek grinned.

"Now we’re fighting!" he yelled.

Dean exhaled slowly.

"Yeah." he said silently.

He looked at the demon, then at the spear in his hands.

He had been treating every fight so far like a warm-up but this one wasn’t.

Dean suddenly moved.

Instead of waiting for Varek’s next attack, he rushed directly toward him.

Varek’s eyes widened as their weapons collided, but Dean forced his spear against both blades and pushed them aside through sheer strength.

Varek tried to pull away, but Dean didn’t let him. He stepped inside his guard and slammed his forehead into the demon’s face.

Varek staggered.

Dean turned the spear around and struck his ribs.

The third strike he did sent him flying.

Varek hit the ground hard and rolled several times before stopping. He tried to stand, but his legs shook beneath him.

Dean walked toward him. He wasn’t running. This still was easier than anyone would think it would be.

Varek looked up. The spear was already pointed at his chest.

For a few seconds, neither moved.

Then Varek slowly raised one hand.

"I surrender." he said.

The arena fell silent.

The announcer stared at him before raising his staff.

"Varek of the Nether has surrendered!"

He turned toward the audience.

"DECANUS WINS!"

The arena erupted.

Dean lowered his spear and took a breath. His side was still bleeding slightly, his arms were sore, and his breathing was heavier than before. That was the first opponent in the tournament who had actually made him work for the victory.

Still he didn’t even use a tiny point of his Holy Power Energy. Whatever he did, he did it with his own strength.

Well...pure strength.

Varek remained on the ground for a moment before looking up at him.

"Decanus." he said.

Dean looked down.

The demon smiled tiredly.

"Now I understand why everyone was waiting for you."

Dean’s eyes narrowed.

Again.

That sentence. The one that everyone kept saying.

He looked toward the audience. Hundreds of eyes were fixed on him. Some were cheering, others weren’t. Some watched with curiosity, some with excitement, and some with an expression Dean couldn’t quite understand.

Expectation.

As if they had known he would eventually stand here.

Dean slowly tightened his grip around his spear.

He was searching for an answer but that single moment he saw something.

Rather...someone.

He breathed like he was done with everything and looked at the announcer.

"Can I get the fuck out now?" he asked.

Announcer directly looked at him and asked "As in surrendering or taking a break, sir Decanus?"

Dean simply said "Taking a break, I saw someone I know."

When the announcer heard this he simply bowed and when that happened the gate couple meters away from Dean opened.

It was a way to go.

A way for him to go to that fuck-ass person who made all this happen.
