The morning sun illuminated the gray brick structures on the walls of the Viorta border fortress. A thin mist still blanketed the valley below the cliff. The sharp scent of dew and wet grass pierced the cold air. Several black birds flew flapping their wings past the watchtower.

Two guards stood leaning against the stone fence. They yawned widely beginning their morning watch shift above the gate.

"Hoah." Qura wiped his face roughly. "I guess drinking too much last night has affected my body man."

"You just realized that now?" asked Blake the guard beside him. "So you will stop drinking?"

"What is the bet. Thirty gold coins? I dare to take it."

"That is also if you are lucky enough to be alive when I am sixty years old."

The two guards laughed lightly breaking the morning silence.

A young guard walked approaching them. His iron armor uniform and equipment still looked very clean and neat. The young man gave a small yawn holding back the sleepiness in his eyes.

"Morning gentlemen."

"Ah are you the new kid?" asked Qura.

The young man nodded. "Yes."

"I am transferred to this division for two months before undergoing further training." The young man extended his right hand. "Please guide me."

Qura shook the young man's hand. "Qura."

"And you?" The young man turned his head.

"Daume," the young man answered. He released his hand then switched to shaking the second guard's hand.

"Blake," answered the second guard squeezing Daume's hand.

"How old are you Daume."

"Nineteen," Daume answered.

"Quite young. It is quite great you could pass the training at that age," Blake said.

"Really?" Daume asked.

"Certainly man. I only graduated at the age of twenty three." Blake pointed at Qura with his thumb. "He is twenty four years old."

"I see." Daume released his handshake. He turned to look at the expanse of the valley outside the fortress wall. "So what is our job here gentlemen?"

"More or less you will just stand here monitoring the area outside the wall. If there is monster movement you report to the captain. The guard troops below will handle the rest. Or you can kill it yourself if you can."

"That is if your level is high enough."

"We take turns resting every four hours. You can go home when the sun goes down," Blake added.

"Do attacks happen often?" Daume asked.

"Very rarely. Unless there is a fool who intentionally attacks the border wall."

Qura narrowed his eyes piercing the morning mist. "Someone is coming."

In the distance the sound of horse hooves could be heard faintly. A horse walked very slowly along the dirt road toward the fortress gate.

"That horse. That is the royal envoy's horse!" Blake said. His eyes widened recognizing the saddle emblem from afar. "He has returned."

Qura and Blake smiled.

"What do you think the result is. Did Elfier agree to it?"

"I hope so. The price of food has been very expensive lately."

"I will go down to report to the captain!" Blake said enthusiastically.

When Blake turned his body Daume gripped his sleeve tightly.

"Wait."

"Huh? Why."

Daume's pupils shrank. Beads of cold sweat came out of his temples. He stared straight at the horse down there without blinking.

"Look closely."

"He is. He is."

Qura and Blake turned to look forward again. Their facial expressions instantly turned pale and stiff.

The morning mist slowly thinned blown by the wind providing a very clear view.

The horse carried a human body sitting upright on the saddle without holding the reins. The body wore the official envoy clothes of Viona. There was no head above his neck. Red blood that had dried and blackened stained the entire neck collar to the front of his clothes.

The headless figure continued forward delivered by his horse in the morning silence.

...

Capital city of Viena.

The bright sun shone on the ancient European styled brick buildings around the city square. The cobblestone streets were filled with citizens going back and forth.

A woman walked calmly parting the crowd. She had a pair of dragon horns on her head. Her long hair was pink matching the color of her eyeballs. She wore an all white eastern styled cloth outfit. Several spots of red blood stains stuck to the bottom of her clothes. Every step she took left a thin trail of blood on the paving stones.

Citizen activities stopped completely. Merchants knights adventurers goblins and dwarves froze where they stood. Their gazes were fixed on the woman's right hand.

The dragon woman carried a human head by its hair. The head was the head of the Viona envoy. The pale mouth of the severed head bit a scroll of letter.

Not a single person dared to make a sound or approach. The royal knights and adventurers at the location just stood in silence staring with terrified eyes.

The dragon woman kept walking forward toward the royal palace ignoring her surroundings.

...

Throne room of the Viona Kingdom.

A knight ran hurriedly across the red carpet. His armor clanked loudly breaking the focus in the room. He stopped right in front of the throne steps where King Viona was discussing with several of his officials and advisors.

"Your Majesty! Emergency!"

King Viona frowned. His face showed annoyance.

"Can you not see we are discussing something."

The knight immediately knelt bowing his head.

"Captain of the Alonades knights requesting permission to report Your Majesty."

"A woman suspected to be from the dragon race is seen walking toward the palace. She. She."

"What. Dragon race? Why is she here. Why are you panicking." King Viona snorted softly. "Maybe she just came to discuss an agreement. No need to panic and ruin this meeting."

"She. She brought a letter. And. And." The knight caught his ragged breath. He had trouble getting his voice out.

"And she what!" reprimanded one of the advisors in an annoyed tone. "Speak properly or I myself will hang you."

The knight took a deep breath. He raised his face looking at the king.

"She killed all the wall guards, killed several knights and and... she..."

"brought the head of our envoy Sir Gladoch."
