I'm Not Your Husband, You Evil Dragon!
Chapter 266: The More I Understand Her"And no matter who comes against me..." Erza’s violet eyes met his without the slightest hesitation. "I will kill every single one of them."
The certainty in her voice left Isvarn without an answer. He had advised three Queens throughout his life, and until that moment, none of them had ever rejected his counsel so completely. Yet Erza sat before him without fear, one hand resting over the life growing inside her, prepared to make enemies of the entire world rather than give up her child.
The memory slowly faded.
Back beneath the tree in Yuno City Park, Isvarn remained silent for a moment before turning toward Yuuta.
"And that is how Erza chose to let the child live," he said. "It didn’t become easier afterward. She faced enemies from outside Atlantis, opposition from within her own kingdom, and many who believed the child would become her greatest weakness. But no matter what happened, Erza never changed her decision."
Yuuta listened quietly, his eyes already beginning to burn.
"In the end, Elena was born." Isvarn’s gaze returned to the children playing across the park. "And strangely enough, the child I once wanted gone became the one who changed my mind."
There was no pride in his voice anymore. If anything, Yuuta could hear regret beneath it.
"I spent my entire life believing weakness should be removed before someone else could exploit it. Children were the clearest example of that to me. They were fragile, dependent and incapable of protecting themselves, so when Erza chose to keep Elena while surrounded by enemies, I thought she was allowing emotion to cloud her judgment."
Isvarn watched a little girl laughing as she ran toward her father.
"I was arrogant."
Yuuta slowly looked toward him.
"I thought Elena would become Erza’s weakness, but Erza never saw her that way. Even before that child was born, when she had never seen her face or heard her voice, she was willing to stand against anyone who tried to take her away."
Isvarn’s expression softened slightly.
"I still don’t completely understand how someone as cold-hearted as Erza could care so deeply for a child who hadn’t even been born yet. But she did. She protected Elena before Elena could ever know she was being protected."
His voice became quieter.
"And after Elena was born... I eventually understood why."
A long silence followed.
The laughter of children continued around them, but Yuuta no longer paid attention to any of it.
Yuuta’s shoulders began to tremble as Isvarn’s story finally came to an end.
He shook his head slowly, trying to control himself, but his vision had already blurred beneath the tears gathering in his crimson eyes. Everything he had learned today seemed to be pressing against his chest at once, making it difficult even to breathe properly.
"...What should I do?"
His voice was barely more than a whisper. Isvarn turned toward him, but Yuuta kept his head lowered, staring through blurred eyes at the Eternal Flower Ring resting inside his palm.
"What... what should I do, Grandpa?" Yuuta asked again.
His lips trembled as the first tear escaped and rolled down his cheek.
"I don’t... I don’t know what I’m supposed to do anymore."
Isvarn didn’t answer immediately. He simply watched as Yuuta’s fingers slowly tightened around the ring, understanding that the boy wasn’t truly asking him for a solution.
Yuuta swallowed painfully before trying to speak again.
"Every time I learn something new about Erza... every single time..." His voice faltered, forcing him to pause and draw a shaky breath.
"My own words come back and... they fucking eat me alive, Grandpa."
His vision blurred completely. Yuuta quickly wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, but another tear slipped free almost immediately.
"The more I understand her, the more I..." Yuuta stopped again, his jaw tightening as he struggled to finish.
"The more I regret what I said."
Isvarn’s expression slowly changed as he watched him.
He tried wiping his face, but it accomplished nothing. His eyes continued watering, and eventually Yuuta simply stopped trying to hide it.
"I blamed her for everything because I was hurt. I kept thinking she didn’t understand me... that she didn’t know how to love me properly."
Yuuta’s breathing became unsteady.
"But I didn’t understand her either."
Yuuta stared down at the ring for several seconds before a weak, broken laugh escaped his lips. He shook his head again, almost unable to believe how certain he had been when he said those things to Erza.
"I really thought I understood everything."
His smile disappeared almost immediately.
"But I didn’t."
Yuuta’s fingers closed around the ring as another tear landed against his hand. He stared at it through his blurred vision, and a weak, bitter laugh slipped from his lips as he slowly shook his head.
"I’m such a fool, Grandpa... I’m such a fucking fool."
Isvarn’s expression changed slightly, but he didn’t interrupt. Yuuta was barely looking at him anymore. His eyes remained fixed on the ring while everything he had learned about Erza continued turning inside his mind.
"She was surrounded by enemies. She carried Elena while preparing for a war, stood against her own people and..." Yuuta’s voice began to break, forcing him to stop for a moment.
"She carried all of that by herself."
His fingers tightened around the ring until his hand began to ache.
"And me...?"
Yuuta swallowed painfully.
"Where was I, Grandpa? I was somewhere safe. Comfortable. I didn’t know anything. I didn’t know she was fighting. I didn’t know she was carrying my daughter. I didn’t even know she was waiting for me."
Another tear rolled down his cheek. Yuuta wiped it away, but his hand remained over his face as his breathing grew increasingly unsteady.
"And then... after all of that... when she finally came back to me..."
He couldn’t finish immediately.
Yuuta closed his eyes, and the argument from last night returned with painful clarity. He could see Erza standing before him again. He could remember her expression, the tears she had tried to hide and every cruel word he had thrown at her because he had been too angry to listen.
"...I insulted the very love she sacrificed so much for."
His voice had become little more than a broken whisper.
For several seconds, Yuuta couldn’t say anything else. His shoulders trembled beneath his hand while Isvarn remained beside him, allowing him to cry without interfering.
"I’m pathetic, Grandpa." Yuuta slowly lowered his hand, revealing his reddened eyes. "I actually looked at her and... called her an animal."
His lips trembled as he shook his head.
"What the hell was I thinking?"
A broken laugh escaped Yuuta, but there was no amusement behind it.
"I called her an animal..."
Yuuta looked down at the Eternal Flower Ring again, unable to stop the tears falling onto his hand.
"...when I was the one behaving like one."
His voice disappeared after those words.
For a while, Yuuta could only sit beneath the tree and cry. Everything felt different now. Last night, he had spoken while angry, hurt and completely unaware of everything Erza had carried before returning to him. At the time, those words had felt justified because Yuuta had believed he was finally confronting the truth.
Now that he knew more of that truth, he wished desperately that he could take every word back.
Yuuta lowered his head further, his thumb trembling against the ring.
"I’m sorry..."
His voice was so quiet that Isvarn almost couldn’t hear him.
"I’m so sorry, Erza..."
Yuuta’s lips trembled as another tear slipped down his cheek.
"I didn’t know. I... I didn’t know any of it."
Isvarn didn’t interrupt him.
The old dragon remained beside Yuuta and quietly observed him. He still didn’t know exactly what had happened between Yuuta and Erza, but centuries of experience allowed him to recognize enough pieces to understand that something serious had occurred between the two.
It also explained something else.
Erza’s presence.
Isvarn had noticed earlier that the Queen’s presence wasn’t where it normally should have been. He hadn’t cared enough to investigate at the time, but now, looking at Yuuta’s condition, that small detail suddenly carried a different meaning.
So that’s why...
His eyes shifted toward Yuuta.
The strange incident during their morning training also returned to him. Yuuta’s aura had become so unstable that the weapon in his hands had shattered beneath the uncontrolled pressure, yet the boy himself hadn’t even seemed aware that his power was leaking from his body.
Isvarn had originally dismissed it as poor control.
Now he wasn’t so certain.
The aura leaking faintly around Yuuta still wasn’t calm. It moved according to emotions Yuuta wasn’t consciously controlling, responding to the guilt, sorrow and regret consuming him from within.
Whatever had happened between him and Erza had affected him far more deeply than Isvarn initially realized.
So the old dragon waited.
He didn’t demand an explanation while Yuuta was crying, nor did he tell him to control himself. He simply remained beside him until several minutes had passed and Yuuta’s breathing gradually became steadier.
Eventually, the tears slowed.
Yuuta wiped his face with both hands and took several deep breaths. His eyes remained red and swollen, but the violent trembling in his shoulders had finally begun to disappear.
Only then did Isvarn speak.
His voice was different from the cold tone he normally used while training Yuuta. It was quieter and unexpectedly gentle, almost like the old man Yuuta sometimes forgot existed beneath the ruthless dragon.
"Boy... did something happen between you and Erza?"
Yuuta slowly raised his head.
His eyes were red from crying, his face exhausted and the sadness inside them was impossible to hide.
Isvarn stared at him.
Then something strange happened.
A small ache appeared inside his chest.
Isvarn’s eyebrows drew together. His hand instinctively moved toward the place, almost as though he expected to find an injury there, but there was nothing.
What was that?
He looked at Yuuta again.
The feeling returned.
Concern.
Isvarn became strangely still.
Throughout his long life, he had trained many people. He had watched disciples bleed, fail and occasionally die. His method had always been simple: if someone wasn’t strong enough to survive his training, then they had no business becoming his student.
Attachment only interfered with judgment.
Yet looking at Yuuta’s reddened eyes now, Isvarn didn’t feel irritation at his weakness.
He felt worried.
Why?
The question genuinely disturbed him.
Yuuta had originally been useful to him. A strange human with an unusual body and an even stranger potential someone Isvarn believed might eventually help him reach powers he had spent years pursuing.
That should have been all.
Somewhere along the way, however, something had changed without Isvarn noticing.
The irritating human who called him Grandpa, argued with him, complained during training and somehow remained comfortable around a dragon who could kill him effortlessly had stopped feeling like merely another disciple.
Isvarn slowly lowered his hand from his chest.
For once, he didn’t try to understand the feeling.
He simply looked at Yuuta and asked again, even more gently this time.
"What happened between you two, boy?"
Yuuta’s eyes lowered toward the Eternal Flower Ring again. His thumb slowly moved across its surface while he searched for an answer, but there was so much to explain that he didn’t even know where to begin.
"It’s... a long story, Grandpa."
He fell silent afterward. Isvarn didn’t rush him, and the sounds of children playing across the park filled the space between them while Yuuta gathered himself. After a long pause, a weak and painful smile finally appeared on his face.
"It’s a story about a fool who insulted the very love someone was desperately trying to give him." Yuuta swallowed as his eyes began watering again.
"A fool who was so desperate to prove that he was right... that he never stopped to wonder whether he might be completely wrong."
Isvarn’s expression became more serious, but he continued listening.
Yuuta stared at the ring as he spoke, almost as though he were confessing to it rather than to the old dragon beside him.
"I had every right to want answers, Grandpa. I still believe that. They were my memories... my life. But somewhere along the way, I stopped trying to understand her and started trying to hurt her because I was hurting."
Yuuta’s voice caught in his throat, forcing him to pause.
"I hurt her just because I wanted those answers."
His fingers closed tightly around the ring.
"How am I supposed to show my face to her now? How do I stand in front of Erza after everything I said to her? What am I even supposed to say... ’Sorry, I didn’t understand you’?" Yuuta shook his head desperately. "After everything she went through, what kind of apology could possibly be enough?"
His breathing started becoming uneven again. Isvarn watched him for a moment before placing one firm hand on Yuuta’s shoulder.
"Boy, control yourself. You’re telling me pieces of the story and then condemning yourself before I even understand what happened." His grip tightened slightly, forcing Yuuta to look at him. "Start from the beginning. Tell me what happened between you and Erza, and don’t leave anything out."
Yuuta sniffed and wiped the remaining tears from his face. He took several slow breaths before finally nodding.
"...Okay. I’ll tell you everything, Grandpa."
And this time, Yuuta did.
He started with Elena and the Aesthor Stone. He explained how everything surrounding that stone eventually led him toward memories he didn’t even know had been taken from him. From there, Yuuta told Isvarn about confronting Erza and discovering that she had erased his memories moment ago.
At first, Isvarn listened with the same calm expression he always carried. Yuuta explained how betrayed he had felt when he learned the truth, how desperately he had wanted Erza to explain herself and how every answer or lack of one had only pushed his emotions further out of control.
Then Yuuta reached the argument.
His voice became quieter as he admitted the things he had said. He told Isvarn how he had questioned whether Erza truly loved him, how he had accused her feelings of being nothing more than the instincts of a dragon and how he had refused to believe that what she felt could be the same love he had spent his entire life wanting.
The expression on Isvarn’s face slowly began to change.
Yuuta didn’t notice.
He was too lost in the memory.
He continued describing how Erza had tried to answer him, how the argument became worse and how he had continued speaking even after seeing tears gathering in her eyes. Finally, with visible shame, Yuuta admitted the one thing that now hurt him more than everything else.
He had called her an animal.
The moment those words left Yuuta’s mouth, Isvarn’s fingers slowly tightened against his knee. A faint pressure began spreading around the bench, but Yuuta remained unaware as he continued telling him what happened afterward.
He explained how Erza finally broke down, how she cried in front of him and how she told him that she had been a fool for falling in love with him. Then came the moment she left, flying away while Yuuta remained behind, still too angry and hurt to understand what he had actually done.
By the time Yuuta finished, several minutes had passed.
"...That’s everything, Grandpa."
Yuuta released a shaky breath and finally looked toward Isvarn.
His entire body froze.
The gentle old man who had been comforting him moments earlier was gone.
Isvarn sat completely still, but his expression had become terrifyingly calm. His violet eyes were glowing faintly, and the aura leaking from his body had already begun spreading throughout the park. The nearby trees trembled despite the absence of wind, while the ground beneath the bench vibrated softly under Yuuta’s feet.
Yuuta’s already pale expression became even worse.
"...Grandpa?"
Isvarn didn’t answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on Yuuta as the pressure surrounding him continued growing, and the peaceful atmosphere that had filled the park only moments earlier gradually disappeared beneath something far more oppressive.
"So..."
Isvarn’s voice was quiet.
"...that’s what happened."
Yuuta swallowed nervously. Something about Isvarn’s calmness frightened him far more than shouting ever could, because throughout all their training together, Yuuta had never seen the old dragon look at him like this.
The pressure suddenly became heavier.
Yuuta’s body reacted before his mind could understand what was happening. Every instinct inside him screamed that the creature sitting beside him was dangerous, and the familiar sensation of death began crawling slowly across his skin.
It was the same kind of fear he had felt when facing monsters that could erase his life before he had any chance to resist.
Isvarn finally stood from the bench.
The moment his feet touched the ground, the earth beneath them trembled. His aura spread outward like an approaching calamity, shaking the nearby trees and benches while his glowing violet eyes remained fixed entirely on Yuuta.
"Human..."
Isvarn’s voice had become colder than Yuuta had ever heard it.
"Do you even realize what you just did to her?"
Yuuta opened his mouth, but nothing came out. His throat had gone completely dry as he stared at Isvarn, and for the first time since becoming his disciple, he genuinely felt that the old dragon standing before him might kill him.
Oh, fuck...
Yuuta’s fingers tightened around the Eternal Flower Ring as one horrifying realization finally entered his mind.
This time, Grandpa wasn’t playing around.
And worse...
Erza wasn’t here to save him.
