Chen Changsheng had believed he was the one striving tirelessly to escape the chessboard. Now, however, he realized he was no different from the player holding the pieces.
The pieces played were just like his past—manipulated in the palm of another's hand.
His divine sense, having descended into this Dream-Law Realm, was now nothing more than a game piece. He had stumbled into a grand deception, pursuing Cultivation and enlightenment in this half-real, half-illusory world just to comprehend the Great Dao one day.
Chen Changsheng sank into deep thought.
He wondered if he had truly made a mistake.
What difference was there between him and the Demon Sovereign?
Perhaps it was at this moment that Chen Changsheng suddenly understood the Demon Sovereign's mindset. Severing a limb to survive was merely a tactic—a necessary and unavoidable one.
Living in this world, everyone had to play the villain a few times. Though it made them hard to forgive, it was an act born of helplessness.
Who would want another version of themselves standing on the opposing side?
Perhaps this cycle was part of his fate, destined to make him play the villain once.
The cultivator within the Dream Method was named Chen Jiuxuan in his secular days. After joining the Immortal Sects, his Master gave him the Daoist name Jiuxiaozi, meaning to soar into the nine heavens.
Within this world, Jiuxiaozi comprehended the intent of nature, realizing that the Dao models itself on nature. He observed the vault of heaven, surveyed the mortal realm, walked thousands of miles, and witnessed ten thousand dharmic arts.
"The myriad Dao methods of the world and the Great Dao reach the same destination by different paths! They spring from one and two, then transform into all living things to blossom!"
Jiuxiaozi set down the book in his hand and suddenly gazed up at the sky.
In this instant, he once again comprehended the origin of creation between heaven and earth.
What was heaven?
"The origin of heaven and earth lies at the inception of chaos. The ancients said that chaos is the beginning of the Great Dao. Before chaos, there was no division between heaven and earth; all things belonged to a unified whole, completely undivided, and the myriad phenomena had yet to be born. Chaos brought about the distinction of heaven and earth, the separation of yin and yang, and the divergence of all living things. The budding mystery of heaven and earth's origin is hidden within chaos..."
"Chaos!"
Jiuxiaozi raised his hand and reached out to pluck at the air.
A speck of chaos drifted onto his fingertips.
He took a deep breath and murmured, "Master, Jiuxiao has gained enlightenment..."
At that moment, he took in all the rules of heaven and earth.
Everything profound became traceable. He had found the absolute root and shattered the veil over the word 'profound'.
The path of Cultivation was always meant to be like this.
When Jiuxiaozi reached out his hand, he could mobilize every rule of the world. In this instant, he became akin to heaven and earth itself.
"Wind."
At his word, a mighty gale was summoned.
"Rain!"
As his voice fell, dark clouds blotted out the bright daylight in the blink of an eye, unleashing a torrential downpour.
"Thunder!"
"Boom!"
Thunder manifested right before the Daoist's eyes.
Yet the very moment he raised his hand, the dark clouds and thunder scattered. A rift opened in the sky, and bright daylight instantly flooded back in!
The Daoist had mastered the fundamental laws of this world.
Beyond that realm, Chen Changsheng, who held the laws of this heaven and earth, also felt a wave of dizziness.
The laws of heaven and earth in his palm were being extracted wisp by wisp.
He looked over.
Only to see the Daoist swear a grand vow to heaven and earth.
"I, Jiuxiaozi, shall transform my body into the Great Dao to purge the world!"
The Daoist sat cross-legged as wisps of the laws of heaven and earth drifted into his Elixir Field and Sea of Consciousness. The Dao models itself on nature; one begets two, two begets three, and three begets all things.
Such a spectacle was something Chen Changsheng was witnessing with his own eyes.
Even though this world was fabricated and the Daoist's actions met not the slightest resistance, such gains were something Chen Changsheng himself had never attained.
Although the Daoist was another version of himself, he was practically a person walking a completely different path.
This was the self Chen Changsheng had once envisioned becoming, yet he had ultimately succumbed to his curse. He possessed nowhere near Jiuxiaozi's perseverance. Chen Changsheng could not fathom why the gap between them was so immense.
He wondered if the Demon Sovereign had viewed him in the same way back then.
Why was the difference so great...
"In comparison, This Chen has truly achieved nothing..."
With these thoughts swirling in his mind, the laws of heaven and earth slipped from his grasp strand by strand, sinking into the Daoist's body.
This also meant that this farce was drawing to a close.
Time shifted rapidly within that realm. In Chen Changsheng's eyes, everything began to accelerate.
The three thousand Great Daos were gathered entirely in the Daoist's palm.
"Merging with the Dao for eternity!"
Jiuxiaozi raised two fingers, drawing the three thousand Great Daos straight into his body.
At this moment, the realm underwent a drastic metamorphosis. The rules of the world gradually became distinctly visible, only to turn unfathomably mysterious a second later.
The living beings in all directions gazed up at the sky.
Sensing the monumental shift in heaven and earth, they felt a sense of dazed wonder.
It was as if this vast, untethered world finally gained a master in this instant.
"Someone has unraveled the origin of this world..."
The Great Dao stirred, and all spirits felt its resonance.
The Daoist stood up and swept his gaze outward. Looking at the passage of time across the firmament, it appeared to flow backward in his eyes. He saw clearly through the chaos of this world; this was the evolution from nothingness to existence.
Jiuxiaozi raised his hand. Looking at the laws of the Great Dao resting in his palm, a profound realization struck him.
"The Great Dao is ruthless..."
For a fleeting moment, a flicker of hesitation appeared in the eyes of the ever-resolute Daoist.
He walked out of his Cave Abode.
He gazed out at the myriad facets of the Red Dust of this world.
In a daze, the Daoist realized there was no true fairness to speak of in this world. There was always deceit; there was always confusion.
This left him stunned for a time.
"The Great Dao is ruthless..."
Understanding dawned on the Daoist. He raised his hand and sealed away his five senses.
"And I, too, am ruthless!"
For this final step across the threshold, the Daoist only needed to lift his foot to cross over.
Centuries of accumulation manifested as an endless surge of momentum, propelling him onto the path of merging with the Dao.
Yet, right on the precipice of that final step...
Another twist occurred.
Jiuxiaozi raised his hand and swept up a handful of dust.
As he held his hand aloft, the dust suddenly gained vitality. Catching a few droplets of water, it transformed into mud.
Watching this unfold, Chen Changsheng was abruptly taken aback.
"What is this for?"
He couldn't quite understand.
As he continued watching, he suddenly froze in place.
The Daoist had molded a clay figure that looked exactly like himself.
"The Great Dao is ruthless, yet this poor Daoist has always retained his attachments."
"Since that is the case, this poor Daoist shall sever his mortal emotions!"
With those words, the Daoist raised his hand, forming it into a sharp blade.
He slashed downward.
His seven emotions and six desires were completely severed in that instant, cascading down to merge into the clay figure.
Fostered by his Daoist methods and Divine Abilities, the clay figure gradually came to life.
The moment the clay figure opened its eyes, the first thing it saw was the Daoist's calm, unrippled gaze.
The clay figure remained completely pure. Though it was formed from the Daoist's seven emotions and six desires, it behaved just like an ignorant child, brimming with curiosity toward the world.
Meeting his gaze, the clay figure asked, "I live because of the Priest, and I shall die with the Priest. But since the Priest is merging with the Dao for eternity, a true death is unlikely. Burdened by these seven emotions and six desires, how am I supposed to endure them?"
The Daoist pondered it for a moment, finding the logic sound.
"Then this poor Daoist will add another stroke."
Chen Changsheng stared blankly at this scene.
In a sudden flash, it was as if he understood something profound!
