Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1298: Whose Life Is Worthless Now?

It was hardly a secret that a "guest" like Chen Changsheng had entered the palace. There was no such thing as an airtight wall in the Imperial Palace; the slightest rustle was bound to be overheard by someone.

The old eunuch had procured a Roasted Chicken from the Imperial Kitchen, along with some wine. Having time to spare, he sat with Chen Changsheng in the Imperial Kitchen to eat and drink, completely at ease.

"How is it? The palace fare isn't bad, is it?"

"It really isn't."

"At the end of the day, this is the Imperial Palace," Chen Changsheng said. "The emperor can get his hands on almost anything he wishes to eat. The chefs here are also top-notch."

"That they are. Come, drink."

The two of them shared the Roasted Chicken and drank their wine.

Just as they were enjoying themselves, a sudden crash echoed from outside the door.

"Bang!"

"Eunuch Xing, where are you?! Get over here and greet me at once!"

A shrill voice pierced through the doorway.

Startled, the old eunuch hurriedly rose to his feet and wiped the grease from his mouth.

"Hide here for now! I'll go send them away!"

Chen Changsheng nodded in silence.

The old eunuch hurried over with a trembling gait. Lowering his head, he put on a smile. "Oh my, I had no idea Eunuch Huang was coming. Please forgive my failure to welcome you."

Yet as he took in the scene before him, the old eunuch's expression drastically shifted.

Eunuch Huang had not come alone. A large group of eunuchs followed behind him, all from the Directorate of Internal Affairs. Such a grand display made it blatantly obvious that they were here looking for trouble.

Eunuch Huang scoffed coldly. "Eunuch Xing, let me ask you. Why are the doors and windows shut tight in broad daylight?"

The old eunuch was quick to react. "There is simply too much dust in the Library Pavilion," he replied. "It looks an absolute mess when the light hits it and is quite difficult to clean, so I closed the doors."

"Is that so?"

Eunuch Huang stepped forward and lightly patted the old eunuch's shoulder. "Eunuch Xing, you are a veteran of this palace. You, more than anyone, know what is and isn't allowed. Do I really need to remind you why I've come here today?"

Eunuch Huang covertly tightened his grip, pinching the old eunuch's shoulder so hard that his face contorted in pain.

"Eunuch Huang, this old servant truly does not know," the old eunuch hurriedly replied.

"Hmm?"

Eunuch Huang squeezed harder.

The old eunuch let out a cry of pain, his body sinking under the pressure.

"Hey, eunuch."

A voice suddenly rang out from deeper inside the pavilion.

Eunuch Huang and the crowd of eunuchs behind him all turned their heads.

They saw Chen Changsheng holding a chicken leg, his mouth still smeared with grease.

Eunuch Huang narrowed his eyes and sneered. "Well, aren't you a bold one, Xing Shen? You truly are a treacherous dog, daring to shelter a thief from outside the palace. It seems you have a death wish!"

The old eunuch's heart sank at those words. "Eunuch Huang, let me give you a piece of advice," he warned in a hushed voice. "It would be best not to provoke the man standing before you."

"Piss off!"

Eunuch Huang lashed out with a kick.

The old eunuch shifted his body slightly, easily dodging the blow.

This only fueled Eunuch Huang's fury. "You traitorous dog!"

He spat the curse, then turned his glare onto Chen Changsheng.

Chen Changsheng finished off his chicken leg and casually tossed the remaining bone up and down in his hand.

"Where did you come from, you thief?!" Eunuch Huang demanded harshly. "And how did you sneak into the Imperial Palace?!"

Chen Changsheng glanced at him. "And what exactly are you supposed to be?"

Eunuch Huang's expression faltered.

But it quickly twisted into a cold sneer. "What am I? Hmph, I'll show you exactly what I am!"

"Seize this thief!"

On his command, the swarm of eunuchs behind him lunged forward.

Seeing this, Chen Changsheng raised his sleeve, fully intending to cast a spell.

But the old eunuch spoke up. "Please, try not to kill anyone."

Hearing this, Chen Changsheng changed his gesture. He swept his sleeve through the air with a whistling rush.

"Whoosh!"

A violent gale erupted out of thin air.

The charging eunuchs were instantly blown off their feet.

"Crash..."

Dozens of eunuchs crashed to the ground, shattering the main doors of the Imperial Study in the process. They lay there, screaming in agony.

Eunuch Huang barely managed to keep his footing, though the hat on his head had been blown to who knows where.

"D-Demon! Sorcerer!"

Eunuch Huang stared wide-eyed at the complete devastation around him.

He pointed a trembling finger at them. "Just you wait! You wait right here!"

"Did This Chen say you could leave?"

Chen Changsheng flicked the bone in his hand forward.

"Thwack!"

The bone snapped in half mid-air, both pieces plunging straight into Eunuch Huang's legs.

"Ahhh!!"

Eunuch Huang shrieked and immediately collapsed to the ground.

"My legs! My legs!!"

"Audacious sorcerer! How dare you commit such violence inside the Imperial Palace?! How dare you!"

Hearing such words, Chen Changsheng let out a soft sigh.

He had lost count of how many times he had heard such ignorant bluster.

People like him always assumed that no one in the world could touch them, acting as if they were the heavens themselves. They never realized just how ridiculous their threats sounded to Chen Changsheng.

Eunuch Huang was terrified. Naturally, he feared death. His incessant screaming was genuine, but so was his terror. Stumbling to his feet, he scrambled toward the exit with a heavy limp.

Chen Changsheng didn't try to stop him again.

Instead, he dragged over two chairs and took a seat.

"Sit,"

Chen Changsheng told the old eunuch.

The old eunuch froze. After remaining in a daze for a moment, he finally sat down.

He let out a sigh. "This has caused far too big a commotion."

"Would you rather have just given up and died?" Chen Changsheng asked.

The old eunuch looked up at him.

"This Eunuch Huang came here specifically for you," Chen Changsheng noted. "I presume the two of you have some past grievances. Men who are incomplete are notoriously petty."

The old eunuch sighed again. "Back then, I competed with him for the position of Chief Eunuch of the Directorate of Internal Affairs. I lost and was relegated to this Library Pavilion. I never imagined he would still refuse to let me off."

"I see."

Chen Changsheng leaned back in his chair. "Then we shall wait for him to fetch his reinforcements. This Chen is quite curious to see just who he can manage to call over."

The old eunuch opened his mouth to protest. "There is no need for all this..."

Chen Changsheng's voice was perfectly calm. "This Chen has harbored a great deal of unhappiness these past few years, with nowhere to vent it. The chance to let loose a little today happens to suit my desires perfectly."

"I speak the truth, this is no small matter," the old eunuch urged. "This is the Imperial Palace, after all, and they have so many men..."

Overcome with worry, the old eunuch shook his head. "This worthless life of mine... if I lose it, then so be it."

Chen Changsheng looked at him. "Whose life isn't worth the same as anyone else's? What makes yours so worthless?"

The old eunuch was stunned by those words.

He found himself completely unable to answer.

As servants, their lives had always been viewed as the cheapest commodity. It was incredibly rare to ever hear something like this.

"Immortal Master Chen,"

the old eunuch said. "Since you do not find my life so cheap, then I will accompany you. Let us cause a ruckus and have ourselves a good time."

"Mhm..."

Chen Changsheng gave a slight nod, entirely missing the subtle shift in the old eunuch's tone.

He sat back and waited for Eunuch Huang to fetch his men.
