Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1299: Pure Sword Technique

At the news of an assassin in the palace, the imperial guards mobilized at once. A massive force swiftly converged on the Library Pavilion.

Eunuch Huang was carried forward by his attendants. Seething with hatred, he swore not to rest until this thief was torn into ten thousand pieces.

"High General, the thief is right ahead!"

Clad in armor and gripping a Horse Lance, Han Zhongjie radiated an icy, murderous aura. He shot a cold glance at the eunuch beside him, his distaste for the man utterly apparent.

Eunuch Huang did not dare meet his eyes. How could a mere eunuch dare act presumptuously before the High General?

Han Zhongjie snorted, and the surrounding Jinwu Guard immediately encircled the area.

His gaze turned to Chen Changsheng, who sat reading in front of the Library Pavilion. The man's face was calm, as if he did not fear the scene before him in the slightest.

Han Zhongjie strode forward, his armor clanking with the movement.

"Are you the thief who injured this eunuch?"

The old eunuch said, "This is High General Han of the Jinwu Guard. In his early years, he earned illustrious military merit fighting against the Northern Desert. He is a loyal commander of the state."

Chen Changsheng nodded. Rising to his feet, he cupped his hands. "Wandering warlock Chen Changsheng greets High General Han."

Han Zhongjie glanced at the supported Eunuch Huang and said, "This eunuch was beaten well."

Eunuch Huang's face flushed red at the remark, but he dared not utter half a word in protest.

Chen Changsheng was rather surprised.

Then Han Zhongjie suddenly leveled his Horse Lance at Chen Changsheng. "But I am on duty today. By trespassing in the Imperial Palace, you have committed a capital offense, and I certainly cannot spare you. I do not wish to make a massive fuss. If you know what is good for you, come over quietly and spare yourself the physical pain."

Chen Changsheng said, "I respect High General Han as a loyal commander, and I know that This Chen sneaking into the Imperial Palace is a capital offense. This Chen has always been one to reason things out, to argue right and wrong, but today is different. Sometimes, one must simply follow his heart."

As he spoke, Chen Changsheng raised his hand. With a flip of his wrist, the Immortal Sword was already in his grasp.

"It is not too late for the High General to step aside now, lest This Chen accidentally injure you."

Seeing the man manifest a sword with a turn of his hand, Han Zhongjie knew he would not be easy to deal with.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

He grabbed Eunuch Huang and hauled him over.

"High General! High General!"

Eunuch Huang cried out in terror.

Han Zhongjie hurled the eunuch forward.

"Then kill this eunuch first, and I will discuss martial arts with you after."

Complete panic overtook Eunuch Huang. "How can the High General do this? This slave has never offended the High General! High General!"

Han Zhongjie kicked him aside and ignored him.

He held no fondness for the eunuchs in this palace. Rootless men were the most sinister and cunning, acting one way to your face and another behind your back. They were utterly repulsive; he had no idea why the palace kept such things around.

The old eunuch watched this scene in a slight daze. Everyone said the High General loathed eunuchs, but he hadn't expected something like this to happen. With so many pairs of eyes watching, was the High General not afraid of Your Majesty handing down a punishment?

Chen Changsheng stepped forward, glancing around at the encircling Jinwu Guard.

Panic gripped Eunuch Huang, and he scrambled away on his hands and knees.

But a nearby Jinwu Guard kicked him right back.

"Did the High General say you could leave?!"

The Jinwu Guard snorted, kicking him back into the center.

Eunuch Huang cut a thoroughly wretched figure. He had likely never imagined he would end up in such a state.

Driven to a dead end, he shrieked, "Han Zhongjie, how dare you! I am the head eunuch of the Directorate of Internal Affairs! Treating me like this is a slap to Your Majesty's face!"

"Heh..."

Han Zhongjie sneered and swung the Horse Lance in his hand.

"No..."

Before Eunuch Huang could finish, a cold glint flashed. In an instant, blood sprayed and a head tumbled to the ground.

Han Zhongjie pulled back his Horse Lance and muttered, "You've dirtied my Horse Lance. Hmph."

Only then did he return his gaze to Chen Changsheng.

Gripping his sword, Chen Changsheng appeared somewhat caught off guard.

"What kind of play is this?" Chen Changsheng asked.

Han Zhongjie declared, "How bold! You thief, how dare you commit murder in the palace!"

"..."

Chen Changsheng was momentarily speechless. He gave a helpless smile. "High General Han, isn't your framing a bit too blatant?"

"Framing?"

Han Zhongjie looked left and right, asking, "Who killed this eunuch?"

The surrounding Jinwu Guard replied in unison, "The thief killed him!"

Han Zhongjie hefted his Horse Lance and said, "Well? Is it still a frame-up?"

Chen Changsheng shook his head and replied, "Not anymore."

Han Zhongjie burst into loud laughter. He seemed rather pleased to have killed the eunuch, declaring, "I have spent my life in military service. I've fought the North Desert People, I've clashed with experts of the jianghu, and I've even crossed blows with demons, but I have never competed against a cultivator. Come at me! Let's have a thrilling battle."

Chen Changsheng looked at his sword. He really hadn't expected that Han Zhongjie had dragged things out like this simply because he was eager for a fight.

Seeing the situation unfold, the old eunuch's heart skipped a beat. He stepped forward and said, "Brother Chen..."

"The High General is a loyal and righteous man..."

Chen Changsheng thought for a moment, then said, "Then we shall exchange a few pointers."

Han Zhongjie snapped coldly, "Cut the nonsense, eunuch! Is it your turn to speak? Say another word, and I will kill you too!"

He looked at Chen Changsheng and said, "And you too. With such skills, you actually associate with a eunuch. Aren't you afraid of dirtying yourself by rolling with filth like this?"

Chen Changsheng replied, "High General, while people are divided into good and bad, not all eunuchs are like the one you just killed."

The old eunuch shook his head helplessly. He stepped half a pace back and stopped intervening.

Chen Changsheng gripped his sword and stepped forward. "High General, if you please."

"Good!"

Han Zhongjie laughed, then charged forward with his Horse Lance raised.

But in the next instant, a surge of Sword Qi suddenly rose.

In the blink of an eye, the sky darkened, and drifting snow began to fall.

In a flash, Han Zhongjie felt cornered from all sides. An endless sense of crisis rushed at him from every direction, as if there was nowhere he could dodge.

The Jinwu Guard tilted their heads back, looking up.

"Is it... snowing?"

The Jinwu Guard were all somewhat bewildered.

And when they looked straight ahead once more...

Han Zhongjie, tightly gripping his Horse Lance, had completely frozen in his tracks. He held his weapon but made no further move forward. He was only a single step away from the man before him, yet in his eyes, that gap felt as vast as the distance between heaven and earth.

Cold sweat poured down Han Zhongjie's back. Snowflakes landed on his shoulders but refused to melt.

Only in this very moment did he recognize the sheer gulf between a cultivator and mortals.

Mortals were, in the end, mortals.

Even the hands holding his Horse Lance were trembling.

Chen Changsheng sheathed his sword, stepped forward, and reached out to brush the snow from the general's shoulders.

Han Zhongjie murmured, "Is this the disparity between mortals and a cultivator...?"

Chen Changsheng shook his head and said, "I'm afraid the High General misunderstands. This is not Immortal Arts, but pure sword technique."
