Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 966: Severed Lotus Root, Connected Threads

Su Junhan knew the greatest issue lay in these two factors. Yet, attempting to resolve either would be immensely dangerous.

Moreover, the physical body and the Sea of Consciousness were interconnected. If either suffered the slightest disturbance, the other would collapse as well.

Chen Changsheng looked up. "Let This Chen think on it a little longer. Perhaps it isn't entirely hopeless."

Su Junhan nodded slightly. "Should we call Daoist Physician Tong and Miss Tao'er back?"

Chen Changsheng waved a hand. "We can discuss that later. This Chen has no real ideas right now, so we shouldn't make them rush back for nothing. If we fail to find a solution, it would only give them false hope."

Ning Bufan wandered through Yuanshan. With the Yuanshan Fox Clan's waist token in hand, he only needed to flash it to ensure no one was foolish enough to offend him.

He had to admit the scenery here was truly stunning. Every mountain and stream felt incredibly serene.

He shook his head with a sigh. "No wonder this is the Demon Domain. Given enough time, even a blade of grass could awaken its intelligence and gain a spirit."

Compared to the Mortal World, the difference was like heaven and earth.

Unbidden, his thoughts drifted back to Miss Yu Die.

"She really is beautiful..."

Ning Bufan muttered to himself. But when he remembered the conversation between her and Mister Chen, he couldn't help feeling that something was off.

Miss Yu Die had called Mister Chen "father"?

Exactly how old was Mister Chen?

A few hundred years old?

Probably older. Judging by Miss Yu Die's aura alone, she had definitely lived for more than a few centuries. Not to mention, she was a plum tree spirit. She might have been cultivating for thousands of years.

"Don't tell me he's actually some thousand-year-old monster..."

Ning Bufan smacked his lips, letting his imagination run wild.

But if he really was over a thousand years old, he certainly didn't act like it. The way the mister playfully wandered the Mortal World didn't fit the image of an ancient being at all.

If an ordinary cultivator had lived for centuries, they would never retain such a cheerful disposition. Much less crack jokes with him about braised beef in a tavern.

"Could it be a past life?"

His interest was immediately piqued.

He was incredibly curious about the concept. The old monk from his past had once mentioned "past lives" and "present lives." The Buddhist Faction's teachings were profoundly extraordinary, and their deep mysteries always left him fascinated but utterly baffled.

He had heard of such things, but he had never seen them for himself.

Hence his curiosity.

If past and present lives were real, wouldn't that mean destiny could carry over between them? It was a marvel that left him clicking his tongue in wonder. The more he thought about it, the deeper he fell into his musings.

But all of a sudden, a sharp ache seized his head.

"Hiss..."

Ning Bufan gritted his teeth and reached up to massage his brow.

He was used to these sudden bouts of pain, but every time it flared up, it was just as agonizingly piercing.

"It's hurting again..."

All his previous leisure vanished. He curled into a tight ball on the riverbank, clutching his head with both hands. Cold sweat beaded on his forehead, and his body thrashed about as he tried to fight off the agony.

"Why does it hurt so much this time?!"

Ning Bufan felt as if his teeth were going to shatter. He writhed and rolled across the ground, yet the pain simply refused to fade.

Though he had frequently suffered from these headaches in the past, they had never been this severe.

It caught him completely off guard.

"Ghk..."

A hoarse gasp tore from his throat.

He suddenly shot up into a sitting position, still clutching his head.

"Ahhhhh!"

The excruciating pain turned his eyes bloodshot, and his already messy hair grew completely unkempt. In that moment, he looked exactly like a madman.

Driven to the brink by the agony, he couldn't stop himself from slamming his head against the ground. Bang, bang, bang. His fingers clawed into the dirt, gouging out deep trails.

He thrashed about for a long time before his strength finally gave out, and he collapsed into unconsciousness.

With a soft thud, his limp body hit the riverbank, dead to the world.

...

By the time Chen Changsheng learned that Ning Bufan had fainted, the sun was already setting.

A spirit fox patrolling Yuanshan had stumbled upon his unconscious form.

Seeing the waist token on his person, they had quickly carried him back.

"He fainted?"

Su Junhan nodded. "I took a look when they brought him in. There is a deep wound in his Sea of Consciousness. It likely flared up unexpectedly, and he fainted once his strength ran out."

"Take me to him."

Su Junhan led Chen Changsheng over.

When he saw Ning Bufan again, the young man was lying in bed. His face was deathly pale, the skin on his palms was completely scraped raw, and his forehead was bruised and bloody. It wasn't hard to tell just how much agony he had been in.

Chen Changsheng stepped forward and projected his Divine Sense into the young man's Sea of Consciousness.

Sure enough, he discovered a massive gash within Ning Bufan's Sea of Consciousness. The wound was incredibly long, nearly cleaving his Divine Sense cleanly in two. Only a few fragile filaments remained connected, exactly like a severed lotus root with its threads still attached.

Chen Changsheng furrowed his brow. This was the first time he had ever seen such a condition.

What was the meaning behind this state of being torn yet clinging together?

Moreover, with his Divine Sense in such a shattered state, how was Ning Bufan even still alive?

Years ago, when Chen Changsheng was forging his External Avatar, he had read records regarding the splintering of Divine Sense collected by Mister Zhong. If an ordinary cultivator's mind were fractured like Ning Bufan's, they would either be driven entirely mad or suffer soul death and bodily destruction. Yet here Ning Bufan was, perfectly alive and breathing...

Bizarre!

Chen Changsheng raised a sleeve, channeling a stream of pure magical power to wake him.

Ning Bufan's eyelids fluttered, and he weakly opened his eyes. The bloodshot veins in his sclera had still not entirely faded.

His headache had mercifully eased.

He breathed a soft sigh of relief and murmured, "Mister Chen..."

"How did you suddenly end up passing out?" Chen Changsheng asked.

"It's an old affliction," Ning Bufan replied.

"An old affliction?"

"My head has always hurt off and on, but it was much worse than usual this time. I actually passed out from the pain."

Ning Bufan gave a bitter smile. He hadn't expected it to escalate so violently.

Chen Changsheng asked, "Your Divine Sense seems to have been cleaved in half, leaving only a few threads connecting the pieces. How did this happen?"

Ning Bufan blanked for a moment, clearly baffled.

"Huh?"

This surprised Chen Changsheng. "You don't know?"

Ning Bufan blinked. "Mister Chen, I don't understand any of that."

Chen Changsheng asked, "You cultivate the Buddhist Faction's Divine Abilities. Have you never looked inward to examine your Sea of Consciousness?"

Ning Bufan paused. "The old monk never taught me how. Back then, he only passed on his Buddhist teachings to me..."

"Is that so..."

Chen Changsheng muttered to himself, "In that case, you likely suffered this injury to your Divine Sense during a magical battle without even realizing it."

Ning Bufan stared at him blankly. "Mister, I've never fought a magical battle with anyone, aside from that brief scuffle at the Investiture of Immortals Assembly. Besides, I've never felt any injury to my Divine Sense."

"Then when did this headache affliction begin?"

"Hmm..."

Ning Bufan thought back for a moment before answering, "As long as I can remember, it's always been this way."
