Infinite Nightmares

Chapter 211: Tide of Thought

The captain was highly skilled, and his team members weren’t far behind.

While Wang Xiaohua’s teammates didn’t possess such individual strength, they coordinated well with one another. Taking a steady and methodical approach, they could use their formations to gain a numerical advantage, ensuring they never lost ground.

Zhang Wenda finally understood. Bureau 507’s combat team hadn’t come here on a suicide mission; they really had a few tricks up their sleeves. They were much stronger than Unit 2826.

Seeing this, Zhang Wenda relaxed. He devoted his full attention to coordinating with Song Jianguo, and together they relentlessly attacked the Little Immortals allied with the Big Circle.

It was clear that without their believers, the power of these Little Immortals had diminished drastically. They were not in the same league as the Mayan Gods at all.

Even though they used immortal arts, the scale of their attacks wasn’t particularly large. Moreover, they seemed to be glass cannons; their nearly transparent skin looked like it would break with a single touch.

Fortunately, they weren’t in the same league as the Mayan Gods. Otherwise, a fight against so many deities would have been impossible.

Before long, the majority of these Immortals and Buddhas were either dead or grievously wounded. But there was one very strange thing: no matter how severe their injuries, they didn’t actually die. They just fell, their bodies contorting as they writhed in pools of blood.

Just as Zhang Wenda thought the battle was about to end, Shuisheng performed a few quick backflips, swiftly closing the distance and placing himself back-to-back with Zhang Wenda.

Clearly, Zhang Wenda’s act of rescue had greatly improved their relationship. They were now comrades who had faced life and death together.

While guarding Zhang Wenda’s back, Shuisheng said, "We need to get out of here. Something’s not right."

"What’s wrong? The odds are heavily in our favor."

But the battle-hardened Shuisheng shook his head. "It’s not right. I don’t think these things are the main event. This is a Big Circle stronghold. Knowing them, they must have an ulterior motive for helping these gods. They never do anything for free; they always have their own agenda."

"Before you arrived, I led a team on a sweep and found nothing suspicious. That’s not the Big Circle’s style. There must be something we missed. You all leave first. I’ll cover your retreat."

In a situation like this, Zhang Wenda decided to trust the veteran’s judgment and didn’t insist.

"Alright. If we’re leaving, we leave together." Glancing at the torn canopy fabric above, Zhang Wenda looked at Song Jianguo and jerked his head upward.

Song Jianguo nodded, grabbed the cat-line in his hand, swung it forcefully a few times, and hurled it toward the ceiling. Instantly, a black rope ladder dropped down.

After a concerted effort to repel all the Immortals and Buddhas, they quickly scrambled up the ladder and into the tunnel that emerged from the earth.

Everyone present had a Red Core. Boosted by its power, they all scaled the tunnel at incredible speed, reaching the temple-strewn surface in no time.

"Captain!" Wang Xiaohua, who was standing guard at the entrance, jumped when she saw so many people emerge.

Shuisheng didn’t answer right away. Instead, he impassively observed the ground, even grabbing a handful of soil and putting it in his mouth to chew.

With no time to rest, Zhang Wenda immediately said to Shuisheng, "If something’s wrong, then stop messing around. Contact HQ and call for reinforcements."

His brow deeply furrowed, Shuisheng spat out the mouthful of dirt. He had just opened his mouth to speak when the ground jolted violently. The tremor seemed to shake everyone to their very core.

Along with a horrifying, earth-shaking rumble, a colossal shadow loomed up from behind, eventually enveloping them all.

As they all slowly turned, the reflection of a pitch-black, sky-blotting hill gradually filled their pupils.

Zhang Wenda saw that the torso of this mountain was forged from the gilded bodies of countless Buddhas and Arhats. Patches of gold lacquer had peeled away, revealing the squirming, pulsating crimson flesh beneath.

Upon its body, faces that were once dignified and serene were now twisted at impossible angles and melded together. One half of a face might have a benevolent, downcast gaze, while the other half was ripped open to reveal inhuman fangs chanting inverted scriptures.

Countless arms—some covered in dragon scales, some entwined with jeweled garlands, others nothing but pale, sucker-covered tentacles—sprouted and extended from the massive torso, dancing slowly through the air.

A cloying, sweet odor of sandalwood mixed with rotting flesh permeated the air, while ethereal Buddhist chants and clear Daoist invocations echoed simultaneously in their ears.

Its head was a colossal, corrupted Dharma wheel. The edge of the golden wheel was wreathed in flames that were both scorching and freezing. In its center, where a Buddha’s face should have been, was a constantly spinning, bottomless vortex. Within the vortex, the beaded crown of the Jade Emperor would flicker into view, then the hazy bagua of Supreme Lord Laozi, before shifting again into a constellation of a thousand eyes staring wide.

When Zhang Wenda saw the bulging eyeball on one of its hands, he finally understood what it was he had encountered back in that first temple.

All the dead Immortals and Buddhas had now been resurrected, but they were twisted by the Big Circle into something else entirely.

Shuisheng had been right. The Big Circle’s true plot wasn’t underground—this thing was!

Not only had the Big Circle completely subjugated all the local Immortals and Buddhas, they were also using their powers to pull off something massive!

Song Jianguo’s teeth chattered uncontrollably, making a continuous CLACK-CLACK-CLACK sound.

The creature hadn’t even moved, yet a sliver of despair bloomed in everyone’s hearts. ’How in the hell do we fight this thing?’

"Six!" With Shuisheng’s roar, his team members scattered in all directions with practiced understanding. The objective had changed from annihilating the enemy to getting the intel back at all costs.

But just then, the giant mountain-like creature lifted its right foot and stomped down. The ground shook, and the world itself transformed.

As churning clouds and mist blanketed the earth, the surrounding tomb-like temples grew at an explosive rate, rapidly transforming into majestic Immortal Cave Mansions.

"Captain! It’s an Ideological Tide! We’re trapped inside!" a team member yelled in despair.

"Everyone, retreat! I’ll hold it off!" Like a praying mantis trying to stop a chariot, Shuisheng charged resolutely toward the monster, downing a bottle of viscous liquid as he ran.

By now, Zhang Wenda had already gotten some distance away with Song Jianguo.

But no matter what they did, one of the twisted monster’s arms, the one holding a horsetail whisk, swayed gently. A golden character for "Immobilize" appeared between everyone’s brows, and they all froze on the spot.

’We’re screwed!’ The thought flashed through everyone’s mind.

The gigantic, mountain-like monster swayed its body again, and dozens of longswords materialized out of thin air, flying toward everyone’s necks.

’Move! Move!’ Zhang Wenda screamed frantically in his mind as he watched the swords draw nearer.

Just as everyone was about to be decapitated, a red light flashed. A series of metallic CLANGS rang out, and all the longswords shattered into pieces.

Then, to everyone’s utter disbelief, a three-meter-tall, red, scythe-wielding monster appeared, white steam slowly venting from the hollows in its body. It stood directly in front of Zhang Wenda.
