Fangs, backward-jointed limbs, a barbed scythe, and a body riddled with holes. Zhang Wenda froze when he saw what stood before him.
There might be other scythe-wielding monsters in the world, but only one was this red—and it was supposed to exist only in his own Spiritual World.
Yet here it was, appearing so brazenly before him. And it had even saved him?
For a moment, Zhang Wenda was disoriented. What, in this world, was the boundary between the real and the spiritual?
But his current predicament left no room for other thoughts. He could see the colossal monster of flesh and blood in the distance, its countless arms waving as it churned the clouds above.
’I have to do something.’ Just as the thought crossed Zhang Wenda’s mind, he realized something had changed. Looking down, he saw only a body riddled with holes.
At some point, the red, scythe-wielding monster had vanished, and he had become it.
When he turned his head, he saw the small, yellow Zhang Wenda being picked up by a blue rabbit.
"What in the world is going on?" A cluster of thoughts, woven from countless overlapping threads, inexplicably materialized beside Zhang Wenda.
"Kill it!! Kill that monster!"
Zhang Wenda shot out his right hand, slicing the cluster of thought into three. Then, bending his legs slightly, he leaped toward the enormous monster in front of him.
And just then, from within the clouds churned by the giant, malformed monster, came waves of dragon roars powerful enough to make the air tremble.
Along with flashes of golden light, golden dragons emerged from the clouds. Three golden dragons rushed over first, quickly weaving in and out of the holes in Zhang Wenda’s body, tying themselves into knots in an attempt to restrain him.
Zhang Wenda’s scythe rose and fell, scraping scales from the dragons’ backs. Amidst piercing draconic shrieks, another five golden dragons charged in from all directions.
The dragons dissolved into golden light, transforming into luminous tattoos that slithered across Zhang Wenda’s body, attacking as they moved.
Almost completely enveloped by the dragons’ bodies, Zhang Wenda was bound tight like a mummy, unable to move. He could only wait as the amalgam of Immortals drew near.
Amid the golden radiance, Zhang Wenda saw a flash of dazzling morning sun, then a yellowed lightbulb, and then the cold, blood-stained glint of a blade.
’Kill him! Kill him! Kill him!!’
Roaring through gritted teeth, Zhang Wenda stoked the hatred in his heart. His red body began to swell and grow.
As he expanded, Zhang Wenda gradually regained control of his limbs. Still covered in the golden dragon tattoos, he charged toward the massive monster.
As Zhang Wenda reached the creature’s colossal leg, an ever-expanding giant axe plummeted from the sky, aiming for his face.
Zhang Wenda dodged left. He plunged his sharp scythe into the flesh of the monster’s leg and began to scramble upward.
Bloody, mangled hands emerged one by one from the flesh, frantically clawing at Zhang Wenda, trying to pull him into the fleshy mass.
His sharp scythe swept out, mowing down the grasping hands like they were stalks of straw.
Now, Zhang Wenda climbed upward over a trail of severed limbs. He wasn’t sure if it was a trick of the eyes, but he suddenly realized the monster’s body no longer seemed as enormous as before.
Just as victory seemed within his grasp, a whistling sound filled the air. A Three-Pointed Double-Bladed Spear, growing larger by the second, swung toward him from left to right like a massive pendulum.
Zhang Wenda tried to dodge, but to the sound of Sanskrit chants, the Three-Pointed Double-Bladed Spear multiplied—from one to two, two to four, and four to eight—barring his path above and below.
Facing imminent decapitation, ’Training Session #2’ seemed to have been for nothing. A torrent of conflicting thoughts exploded in Zhang Wenda’s mind.
Yellow: ’Am I going to die? What does dying feel like?’
Blue: ’We have to retreat! It’s too strong, I’m not a match for it.’
Red: ’Kill! Kill them! Kill one and I break even, kill two and I’m ahead!’
Assaulted by these thoughts, Zhang Wenda’s body felt as if it were being torn apart. Trembling clusters of thought-stuff began to emanate from him, drifting out into the space around him.
Just in the nick of time, the yellow voice spoke up again. ’Look at all these thoughts... they’re like cotton candy, or like clouds floating in the sky.’
The instant that voice was heard, the blue one exploded in his mind. ’I have a plan!’
Zhang Wenda instantly understood the idea. Kicking off the monster’s body with both feet, he landed squarely on the newly formed thought: ’I have a plan!’
His body was so heavy he nearly stomped the ’I have a plan!’ thought out of existence.
Stomping down hard on the ’I have a plan!’ thought-cloud, Zhang Wenda propelled himself toward another one that had just appeared to his left: ’This might work!’. Then, he leaped from that to a third: ’Just like that!’
With a powerful kick off those last two thought-clouds, which then plummeted downwards, Zhang Wenda’s body shot high into the air.
As he began to fall, all three colors in his mind thought in unison. New thought-clouds materialized beneath him, creating new footholds.
Using the support provided by these thoughts born from his own consciousness, Zhang Wenda began to move through the air, effectively gaining the ability of flight.
Once Zhang Wenda got the hang of it, his movements were far less restricted. He easily dodged the barrage of attacks coming from every direction.
Below, Wang Xiaohua watched in disbelief as Zhang Wenda flipped and maneuvered in mid-air, dodging all sorts of attacks, her mouth hanging open.
She had always thought her cousin’s specialty was navigating social situations, like a chameleon. She never imagined his actual strength was this incredible.
Shuisheng, standing nearby, also had a look of shock. He’d always pegged this guy as someone who got by on connections, never imagining his abilities were so far beyond what he had assumed.
More importantly, even someone as experienced and knowledgeable as him couldn’t comprehend how he was doing it.
"He’s outmatched on his own. We have to help him," the blue rabbit holding the small, yellow Zhang Wenda said to Shuisheng.
"I don’t know what this stuff is made of, but it’s worth a shot." Shuisheng then looked at his teammates. "Five-four-one."
At his word, the whole team raised their flashlights in perfect sync. They began flashing them at the distant enemy in a rapid, high-frequency pattern, while Shuisheng began chanting something quick and urgent under his breath.
