Ch 115; A Dragon’s Abode

*Anos’s POV*

‘This room is almost like a womb.’ Anos thought, sitting in the oven that was Hagrid’s hut.

The fire still roared in the grate, warm and crackling with embers whenever a log splintered and fell as ash, and he almost wanted to touch it. The flame seemed to be asking him to just step in and sleep but his senses and the threat of harm was winning out over the urge to laze into the flames, by a very thin edge.

So instead he focused on the shifty Half-Giant.

Hagrid was smiling from behind his great beard.

“We only want to know who else is doing the guarding really.” Anos said, and after seeing Hagrid still unsure he elbowed Harriet to help.

“We already know you helped, so we just want to know who else.” Harriet said pensively.

“How?” Hagrid asked, and Anos wanted to be impressed by his innocence but decided that now was not the time.

“You’re the GameKeeper, of course Fluffy belonged to you. And Dumbledore would obviously trust you.” Anos said, appearing earnest.

‘Not to mention you all but said that the Cerberus belonged to you in the library but that would make you afraid of giving information away, and we wouldn't want that would we.’ Anos considered, feeling distaste regarding all of it but following through anyway.

Hagrid considered the words, puffing up his chest in pride before replying.

“Well I don’ s’ppose it could hurt ter tell yeh that…. Let’s see…he borrowed Fluffy from me…then some of the teachers did enchantments an’ jinxes… Professor Flitwick, Professor Sprout, Professor McGonagall..” Hagrid counted them down on his fingers “ Professor Quirell, an’ Dumbledore did something himself of course.” Hagrid counted down before scratching his chin, or well his beard around his chin.

“Oh that Professor Zephyr did some stuff too..” Hagrid said, lighting up at the mention of the Fae.

At those words, Simon, Alucard and Anos tensed at once. Alucard stopped sweating and the spell of sleep almost broke from Anos and collectively a single thought passed their heads.

‘Well this will be fucked.’

Anos made a silent prayer for Quirrel’s poor soul, for the tasks would not be kind to him and the giant leech that sat on his head.

“Oh an’ Professor Snape.” Hagrid finished.

Snape.” Harriet said in a hurry, before panicking and looking at Anos whose only response was to shrug helplessly.

“Yeah, yer still on abou’ that, aren’t yeh? How many times do I have ter to tell yeh, Snape helped protect the stone, not steal it.” Hagrid said, looking at Anos who wasn’t offended by the whole ordeal in the slightest, waving his hand in dismissal.

“You are the only one that knows how to get past Fluffy aren’t you Hagrid?” Harriet questioned, hopefully “You wouldn’t tell anyone would you? Not even a teacher.”

“Not a soul but me an’ Dumbledore.” Hagrid said in confidence and Anos wanted to grimace, already knowing how that was gonna end up.

“Can we open one of the windows, please?” Alucard said, now huffing from the heat.

“None can do.” Hagrid replied, glancing at the fire.

Simon followed his gaze and seeing a peculiarity in the fire walked up to it.

“Hey! You’re taking up my fire.” Anos said, annoyed at the gentle warmth of the roaring flames being disrupted.

“Wait a second.” Simon brushed him off before looking into the fire and then gasping.

“What the fu-” His exclamation was cut off by Anos kicking him at his knees.

“I said off the flames, damnit.” he said, drowsily.

“Ow! There is an egg in there!” Simon retorted.

That certainly got everyone's attention as even Alucard stopped his impending death by heat to look at the flames after standing up.

Beneath the steaming kettle was a giant Black egg, smooth of surface with a greenish tint to it, the flames of the hearth seem to be licking at its edges, white and orange licks of fire.

“I didn’t know Giants gave eggs, Hagrid.” Anos said, looking Hagrid up and down as if rethinking his opinions of him.

‘With how he loves his animals he could very well be the parent of it.’ Anos thought, getting up drowsily and stretching his arms.

“It’s not mine!” Hagrid said, affronted.

“Did a Dragon make a lair out of your hut then? Must be the smallest one in existence.” Anos said, feeling better by the flames.

“I won it.” Hagrid said pointedly “Las’ night. I was down in the village havin’ a few drinks an’ got into an’ got into a game o’ cards with a stranger. Man seemed happy to be rid of it, the poor sod.” Hagrid explained.

“But what will you do with it after it hatches?” Hermione asked and as if answering her words the egg made a light tapping sound as it shuffled between the flames, drowsing in ash while Anos moved to sit as close to the flames as he could.

“Raise it o’ course!” Hagrid said with pride.

“That book o’er there has everything.” he continued, pointing at a book which was so clean it appeared to not even have been moved, and seeing as Hagrid appeared to only be 2 pages into the texts it may as well haven’t been opened.

“That one in there is a Norwegian Ridgeback or so I think. I’ll raise it right an’ proper.” Hagrid boomed, obviously pleased with himself.

“Might I remind you that you live in a wooden shack.” Alucard said, wondering how anyone could think of raising a flame breathing dragon in a hut.

“The dragon will grow longer than the length of your hut in just shy of a month. And as much fun as it would be to have a live dragon in the backyard of the castle I’m not entirely sure if it would be highly legal. Last I checked the Wizengamot was only considering making Dragons legal to be owned provided certain requirements are met. I’m sorry to say this Hagrid but I don’t think you’ll be able to keep it for long, better to get it  far away while it’s still an egg and easier to move. I have heard good things about some sanctuaries in Italy and Germany?” Anos offered, seeing Hagrid’s mood go down with each word.

“Not possible, it’s already looking likely to hatch, it hatching in the middle of a journey would be detrimental to both the health of the Dragon and whoever is carrying it.” Alucard said, while Simon shook his head at his misfortune muttering what sounded like ‘Fookin Dragons’ to himself.

“Well, we will just have to keep it till it hatches then.” Hermione said confidently and Harriet was quick to agree.

“I can’ just dump the egg.” Hagrid said, downtrodden and Anos let out a long sigh.

“Keep it like you have been doing till it hatches, if it’s looking likely to hatch, call us, I’ll come around every day or Draco will, to make sure everything is good for the dragon to be born.” Anos offered.

Hagrid nodded, thanking them for the help. The Half-giant looked ready to cry but the tears were swallowed quickly by his great beard.

“We can use the time to find out what to do with it after it hatches, how many weeks do you think we have? A fortnight?” Alucard asked and Anos shook his head, hearing the sound of the tapping of the egg mixed with the flame and the smell of ash.

“This one will come quickly now. We have days at best, maybe a full week.” Anos answered, staring into the bright flames that were warm against his skin.
