Chapter 32: On the Date with Lira - 2

"Smooth. How come you become smooth so randomly?"

Lira said with a smile, resting her face against her knuckles as she looked at him. There was a hint of amusement in her eyes, clearly enjoying the fact that Kyle had somehow managed to come up with a surprisingly smooth line.

Kyle, feeling rather proud of himself, stroked his chin like some ancient Chinese philosopher who had just imparted a profound piece of wisdom.

"One can only appreciate the highway after experiencing the village roads."

Lira stared at him for a moment before a chuckle escaped her lips.

"Oh, I see, Socrates."

She reached across the table, casually picked up Kyle’s cup of coffee, and slowly took a sip from it.

"Hey! That’s mine."

"You weren’t drinking it."

"I was."

"You’re not anymore."

Kyle could only stare at her before shaking his head with a helpless smile. Somehow, he’d already become accustomed to this kind of behavior from her.

They stayed at the café for a little while longer, chatting about whatever came to mind and enjoying the calm atmosphere. There was something strangely peaceful about sitting there with no work waiting for them and no need to constantly watch the clock.

Eventually, they finished their drinks and food, and a female cashier approached their table with the bill.

"Sir, how would you like to pay the bill? Cash or card?"

"Card—"

"We’re splitting it!"

Lira immediately interrupted him before he could even pull his card out of his pocket.

Kyle turned toward her with a confused expression.

"Lira, what are you saying? Let me pay. I brought you on the date, so it’s my responsibility to take care of the bill."

"No! We both work the same job and earn the same amount, so we’re splitting it." She paused for a second before adding,

"Actually, no. Since you’re my junior, I should be the one paying for everything."

"What? No, I’m paying."

Kyle finally pulled out his card and handed it toward the cashier.

"No, I’m paying!"

Lira quickly grabbed his card from the cashier’s hand before she could process the payment and instead handed over some cash.

"Lira!"

"Kyle!"

The two of them began quarrelling like children over something as ridiculously trivial as a café bill. Neither seemed willing to surrender, and the cashier stood there awkwardly while the people around them started glancing over.

A few customers whispered among themselves, clearly amused by the spectacle.

"Are they a couple?"

"They’re cute."

"They definitely look like one."

Kyle and Lira were completely oblivious to the commentary around them.

"Uh... Sir, ma’am?" A female waiter passing by with another order finally decided to intervene.

"Please don’t fight over the bill. Why don’t you play a game? The one who loses pays."

Both of them immediately stopped arguing and looked at each other.

"That works!"

"That works!"

They said it almost simultaneously.

The waiter couldn’t help smiling at their synchronized response.

"Rock, paper, scissors?" Kyle suggested. "What do you say?"

It was a game Kyle rarely won against anyone, so in his mind, this was practically a guaranteed victory for Lira.

"Sure." Lira grinned as she took her position. "I’ll make sure to let you win."

Kyle immediately narrowed his eyes.

"I’ll be the bigger loser!"

The people sitting nearby seemed to become even more interested. A couple of them actually turned in their seats to watch, apparently entertained by the absurdity of two grown adults deciding who should pay a café bill through a children’s game.

They raised their hands.

"Rock, paper, SCISSORS!"

Kyle threw scissors.

Lira threw paper.

"I lost!"

Kyle exclaimed with a huge winning smile.

Lira stared at him for a moment before rolling her eyes.

"Don’t be happy yet. We’ve got two more rounds!"

"Right."

They prepared themselves again.

"Rock, paper, SCISSORS!"

This time, Lira threw scissors while Kyle threw paper.

"I lost!" Lira shouted excitedly, pumping her fist before realizing that she had just been waiting for this moment.

Kyle laughed.

"That’s what I was talking about!"

The score was now tied one to one.

"We still have the deciding round," Kyle said confidently. "Don’t get so happy. I told you, I’ll be the bigger loser."

"You’re awfully confident for someone who’s already lost once."

They took their positions one final time.

"Rock, paper, SCISSORS!"

Kyle threw rock.

Lira threw scissors.

For half a second, they both stared at their hands.

Then Lira’s face lit up.

"Yes! I told you I’d win!"

She jumped up from her seat in celebration before quickly correcting herself.

"I mean—lose!"

Kyle clicked his tongue, visibly disappointed.

"Tch... lucky."

[Well, it’s good to see your losing streak hasn’t turned out to be false.]

The system’s voice suddenly interrupted.

’You are right about that one.’

Kyle couldn’t help agreeing as he watched Lira happily finish paying the expensive bill, including the coffee and dessert they’d ordered.

At least she looked happy. And somehow, that was enough for him.

...

Their next destination was the amusement park.

After wandering around for a while, they eventually found themselves sitting inside one of the cabins of the giant Ferris wheel. As it slowly climbed higher, the city spread beneath them, revealing a view neither of them had ever bothered to appreciate properly before.

Lira looked through the glass, her eyes widening slightly as she gazed down at the streets.

"Do you know, I’ve always wanted to come here since I started my job, but sadly, I never had the time... or someone to come with."

Kyle looked out at the city below before shrugging.

"It is what it is. If it wasn’t for this date, I probably would’ve never come here either."

His arm was wrapped around her shoulders, and Lira leaned comfortably against him. Maybe they were progressing a little too quickly, but neither of them seemed particularly concerned about it anymore.

"I’m glad you came," Lira said softly, turning her face away from him.

"It made my day."

Her voice carried more emotion than she’d intended.

The life of an adult was particularly stressful. There was always something demanding attention—work, bills, responsibilities, and an endless cycle of problems that never seemed to stop. Lira had been stuck in that vicious cycle herself, and having even one day away from it felt strangely liberating.

She was glad she could finally take a breath and she was even happier that Kyle was the one beside her.

Her face felt warm, and her eyes became subtly watery, so she kept her face turned toward the window where he couldn’t see it.

"I should be the one saying that," Kyle replied quietly. "It does feel nice to enjoy a moment like this beside you."

He wasn’t exaggerating.

The last eight or nine months after being laid off had been nothing but hell for him. Debt had accumulated, his savings had slowly disappeared, and there had been nobody beside him to support him or even lean on when things became too much.

For once, however, he could forget about all of it.

Just for today.

And honestly, he appreciated this moment just as much as Lira did. Maybe even more but he simply didn’t show it.

...

Unfortunately, their peaceful moment didn’t last very long.

"Ahhh, fuck! Why the hell is this shit so fast?!"

Kyle’s scream echoed across the roller coaster.

"Argh! Fuck! I’m gonna die today!"

TING!

"A bolt! A bolt! I just saw a fucking bolt fly! We’re dead! All of us!"

Kyle was losing his mind.

He hated heights.

He hated dangerous activities.

And he especially hated anything that combined the two with ridiculous amounts of speed.

The worst part was that he’d been too embarrassed to admit any of that before getting onto the roller coaster because he didn’t want to look like a coward in front of Lira.

Now he deeply regretted that decision.

"Ahhhh! THIS IS FUCKING FUN!" Lira screamed beside him, laughing like a maniac as the roller coaster plunged downward. "WHY ARE YOU SO SCARED?!"

"THIS IS NOT FUN!"

"THIS IS SO FUCKING FUN!"

Kyle gripped the safety bar with everything he had.

"I fucking hate you!"

"I can’t hear you!"

"I SAID I FUCKING HATE YOU!"

Lira only laughed harder.

By the time the ride finally came to an end, Kyle stumbled out of the cart looking as though he’d just returned from a battlefield.

He bent over, trying to recover.

"Never... Never again. I’m not doing that shit again."

Lira, meanwhile, was perfectly fine.

In fact, she was having trouble containing her laughter.

"Aha—hahaha! I didn’t know you were this scared of roller coasters!"

Her eyes had become teary from laughing so much as she casually licked the ice cream she’d bought using the couples discount.

Kyle stared at her with a deadpan expression.

"Don’t remind me."
