Legendary Beast Cultivator

Chapter 106: First Mission in Sect

The rich aroma of scorched meat still lingered in the air as the newly accepted disciples finished their meal.

Chen Ming pushed his empty wooden bowl aside and stood up from the bench. "Done!"

Lian Nichang looked up from his soup, shaking his head with a sigh. "You eat faster than a starving wolf."

"We have sect contribution points to earn, my friend!" Chen Ming grabbed Lin Yuan’s shoulder, shaking it eagerly. "Come on, Lin Yuan! Let’s go before the best tasks are taken!"

"Humph," Lin Yuan wiped his hands and stood up calmly. "Let’s go, and I guess the missions will not be completed that soon!"

Lian Nichang watched Lin Yuan and Chen Ming walk out the doorway, letting out a long yawn. "Hahaha! Those two are energetic... I’ll start taking missions tomorrow."

Chen Ming and Lin Yuan walked boisterously toward the Mission Hall immediately.

The Mission Hall was already filled with people. The dozens of older inner disciples gathered around massive wooden bulletin boards covered in hundreds of posted tasks.

Some missions required gathering rare beast cores; some missions asked for wild medicinal herbs, merchant escort duties, ore extraction, or culling dangerous predators sprawling near the sect borders in the wilderness.

’Ummmm...’ Lin Yuan stepped up to the board, his dark eyes darting across the rows of jade slips. ’Chameleon...’

There is nothing about chameleon cores mission. He rechecked the whole bulletin board carefully. But still not a single mention of a Chameleon beast or its core. His expression became frantic slightly.

’Tsk... I was hoping to find a chameleon core task so I could pinpoint their common living grounds.’ Lin Yuan thought, clicking his tongue.

Inside his sea of consciousness, the turtle beast let out a raspy chuckle.

"Hahaha! Don’t fret over it, kid. Just pick any hunting task that sends us deep into the western wilderness. We can track down a Chameleon while finishing the objective of the mission you took."

’Yeah,’ Lin Yuan rubbed his chin, nodding to himself. ’Fair enough.’

He continued reading through the board until his eyes locked onto a wooden slip of a mission:

>>> Rank Three Spider Core Collection <<<

Location: Western Mountain RidgeTarget: Blood-Patterned Shadow Spiders (Rank 3)Requirement: 3 Rank Three Spider CoresReward: 150 Contribution Points + Retained beast materials

"Chen Ming," Lin Yuan reached up and plucked the jade slip from the board. "This one."

Chen Ming leaned over his shoulder, squinting at the text. "Spiders? Rank Three beasts right on our first day?"

"Rank Three pays three times more than standard gathering tasks," Lin Yuan replied, grinning slightly.

"You only care about efficiency and contribution points, Lin Yuan," Chen Ming sneered, staring at him for a few seconds.

"And you only care about food portions," Lin Yuan countered immediately, letting out a smirk.

"Fuck you!"

Lin Yuan laughed as Chen Ming pouted in slight anger before laughing with Lin Yuan.

They walked up to the mission registry counter. The attendant elder took the jade slip, stamped their identity tokens, and handed it back with a solemn nod.

"The Western Mountain Ridge has an abandoned cavern," the elder warned, his face filled with anticipation. "Keep your senses sharp. That cavern is notorious for shelter of large swarms of arachnid-type beasts."

Lin Yuan bowed respectfully, cupping his fists. "Understood, Elder."

Before departing, the two walked out from the outer dormitory courtyard. Lian Nichang was already lying sprawled across his bed, a blanket pulled up to his chest.

"Hey Lian Nichang..." Lin Yuan knocked on the doorframe slowly. "We’re heading out to the Western Ridge. Come with us."

"No..." Lian Nichang lazily raised a single hand from beneath the blanket.

Chen Ming frowned, leaning through the door. "Why the hell are you saying no?"

"Because my bed is so soft, and I am exhausted," Lian Nichang muffled under the blanket.

"You’ve been awake for just forty minutes!" Chen Ming countered immediately.

"And every single minute has been grueling," Lian Nichang mumbled, pulling the blanket over his face. "I’ll take missions tomorrow. Go away for today Chen Ming. Don’t irritate me, please!!"

Chen Ming clicked his tongue in disgust. "Lazy bastard."

"Let him sleep," Lin Yuan chuckled, turning back toward the path. "Let’s move."

****

After a few minutes of walking, Lin Yuan and Chen Ming reached near the western ridge of the peak.

The Western Mountain Ridge was noticeably quieter and more rugged than the central peaks of Red Talon Hall.

There were dense pine forests blanketing the steep slopes, with crimson maples lingered across against the mountain breeze. The further they walked along the pathway, the fewer wandering disciples they encountered.

After nearly an hour of steady hiking, Chen Ming halted, pointing toward a rocky, narrow valley ahead. "There it is."

A small, dark opening groaned between two large granite cliffs from which two to three persons can walk in. The mouth of the cavern was wide enough for a carriage, but the atmosphere around it felt strangely unnatural.

Lin Yuan stopped, his eyes narrowing as he observed the whole area.

The surrounding trees were dead silent. No birds chirping, no insects buzzing. Even the mountain breeze seemed to fade into a frenzy stillness near the entrance.

"Lin Yuan..." Chen Ming scratched his neck, a chill running down his spine. "Why does this place feel so damn creepy?"

Lin Yuan didn’t answer immediately. He knelt down, examining the soft dirt.

A faint, multi-legged scrape marks were scattered erratically across the ground, sprawling directly into the dark pathway.

"Stay sharp," Lin Yuan said quietly, nodding his head. "Let’s head in."

The temperature plummeted the moment they crossed the cavern entrance. The thick, pale strands of sticky webbing sprawled across the damp stone walls, hanging from the high ceiling like tattered curtains.

Drip... drip...

The sound of dropping water echoed from deep within the dark cave.

Chen Ming clenched his fists slightly, summoning his Wind-Falcon as a shiny spirit silhouette beside his shoulder. "I’m ready."

Lin Yuan’s turtle beast appeared atop his left shoulder, its sleepy eyes rolling across the shadows with unbothered gaze.

"Keep your guard up, kid. Something feels off about the cave structure," The turtle beast warned, nodding its head calmly.

’I feel it too,’ Lin Yuan replied internally, smiling calmly.

They walked thirty paces into the dark pathway.

Suddenly, a rapid skittering sound echoed across the roof above them.

"Ehh?" Chen Ming muttered, snapping his head upward. "Above us!"

A black swarm of palm sized arachnids dropped from the darkness like falling hail and few debris.

Chen Ming’s Wind-Falcon let out a piercing screech, flapping its wide wings vehemently once.

Whoosh!

A pressurized gust of sharp wind blades ripped through the dark cave, blasting dozens of Rank One spider hatchlings against the stone walls, crushing them instantly and sending splashes of their blood onto the wall.

But more spiders continued crawling out from the narrow, split grounds in the rock.

Lin Yuan shifted his movement with effortless grace. A rogue spider lunged straight for his neck and he tilted his head half an inch, letting the creature snap at empty air, before his turtle beast throbbed with a thick emerald essence.

Boom!

A heavy shockwave sprawled across the surrounding hatchlings, splashing them into a paste of flesh and blood.

Chen Ming’s Wind-Falcon soared through the pathway repeatedly, slicing through the waves with pressured wind blades.

After a few intense minutes of combat, the swarms finally stopped coming out attacking Lin Yuan and Chen Ming. The crushed carapaces of the spiders scattered across the floor.

Chen Ming let out a calm breath, smearing a bead of sweat which was crawling out from his brow. "Those were just mere Rank One beasts..."

Lin Yuan stepped forward, kicking the broken debris aside. "The small children are scared now, and the mother spider won’t be far away."

They pushed deeper into the dark cave. The air grew slowly humid, and the pale webbing grew so dense that it sprawled across the floor like a sticky carpet.

A loud, rattling vibration shook the stone ahead suddenly. Chen Ming froze mid-stride, petrified.

Lin Yuan slowly raised his eyes toward a massive stone pillar rising from the cavern ground.

Two glowing, fist-sized crimson eyes opened in the pitch-black shadows.

The eight sharp, hairy black legs slammed out slowly from behind the pillar.

A monstrous spider stepped out. Its bulged abdomen was twice the size of a bull, covered in shimmering, dark-crimson veins. The venom crawled from its sharp mandibles, hissing as it melted the stone path under its legs.

A suffocating aura flooded across the cave.

Chen Ming gulped, stepping back a bit. "Lin Yuan... that’s..."

Lin Yuan’s eyes widened for a second.

Inside his mind, the turtle beast’s voice turned serious. "A Rank Three Blood-Patterned Spider. And she’s fully matured and angry now, Lin Yuan."

The large arachnid lowered its head, its eight sharp legs digging into the rock. A loud, ear-piercing screech echoed throughout the cavern, rattling loose debris from the roof.

Lin Yuan took a calm, calculated step forward, the beast essence inside his core igniting with emerald light.

"Chen Ming," Lin Yuan called out.

"Yeah?!"

"Target its left legs with wind blades."

The massive spider strengthened its legs and launched itself straight at them.
