Limitless Summoner System

Chapter 12: The Forest Of Unknowns

The group quickly made their way to the cafeteria and Tyler felt bad ordering the amount of food they ordered so late, but the staff didn’t mind at all. Tyler insisted on giving them a tip, but they couldn’t accept it, so Tyler just left 100 credits sitting on the counter. The young lady smiled and whispered "thank you, I’ll split it with the chefs," which made him happy.

They enjoyed a nice, quiet meal, as most of the students already ate. This was refreshing for Tyler, especially after he got his ass kicked previously while eating a late night dinner.

Ash enjoyed his fish and Shadow enjoyed a nice steak and Tyler started to realize how much money he would potentially pay every day for food if it wasn’t for the school’s free meals. He couldn’t believe they allowed him to order salmon, five steaks, a cheesesteak sandwich and some fries. He enjoyed the food on Vexarra.

On Earth, he was on a strict diet due to his quarterback potential. He also wasn’t used to having to get to know new friends. His girlfriend and his teammates seemed like they were all inseparable forever. Most of his friends he started playing football with in pee-wee, around the age of five.

"You have the most amazing familiars," Amanda said cheerfully, while watching Ash and Shadow eat.

"Hey, what about Orochi?" Adam said as the snake ate a frozen mouse from his hand.

"You going to wash those hands?" Sophie laughed.

Adam jokingly went to touch her, before playfully pulling away.

Tyler loved this. His new friends were becoming closer and he felt more confident sneaking out, despite knowing the risks.

"Ok, time to formulate this plan," He whispered.

The four sat and quietly talked before they decided to head out a little bit earlier than they originally anticipated. Adam used Orochi’s link and scanned the area, and they were able to successfully navigate whoever was outside watching for students.

Once they found a clear path, Tyler asked Shadow if she could track the entrance. After confirming she could, they felt much better about their expedition.

"So, it’s called the forest of unknowns because?" Tyler asked, "I know that sounds dumb, but seriously, what’s the big deal and why could we get suspended or expelled?"

"Because it’s very dangerous and changes every night. One night it could be perfectly quiet, another it can be a hostile group of beasts after you, or fighting amongst themselves. It’s limited to 3rd years because they’re ranked higher and have more experience fighting beasts and such," Sophie explained, causing Amanda to shiver.

Tyler put his hand gently on her shoulders, smiling while looking into her pretty blue eyes.

"Seriously, if you get scared, Sophie, Adam or familiars will help. Have confidence in yourself. Just think of how well you and Sophie worked together in that duel!"

"For real Amanda, you did so amazing. Your power-ups made Sophie look like an A ranked superstar! Don’t sell yourself short... I know that’s probably hard after being treated the way you were, but trust me, you got this!" Adam said kindly.

"He’s right, girl. I shouldn’t have been such an egotistical bitch. I’m just glad you are all understanding. Anyway, Adam, I’m guessing you can sense what level a beast is at with those serpent eyes?"

"For the most part, yeah but I don’t think I can properly track anything over diamond."

"Ash, you can sense them all, correct? What about you Shadow?"

"Yes, most mythological creatures are able to sense the level of any beast. I believe Shadow would be able to sense all aside from maybe Legendary or Mythological? I mean no disrespect, my new friend, I’m just not certain is all."

"I have a special skill called Eye of the Alpha that lets me see the level of any beast or Eidolon. Tyler, this might be useful for you someday."

’Hey system, am I compatible with Shadow’s skill?’

[Error. User isn’t at a high enough level to use a shared skill with new familiar.]

"Woah, you have a system?" Shadow asked politely.

"Oh! Yeah, sorry I totally forgot to tell you. So, I actually died on a place called Earth."

"Please tell me you don’t tell this to anyone!" She pleaded.

"No need to worry Shadow. Just you and Ash, who’s been with me since I was reincarnated almost a week ago."

"Unbelievable, well let’s not keep the group waiting."

They agreed on Shadow leading the most clear path, despite the fog and ominous feeling surrounding the entire forest.

’How can a forest be foggy when it’s a perfectly beautiful night?’ Tyler thought. ’I wonder if this is magic or it’s just the forest...’

They walked carefully down the path with Sophie doing most of the beast killing. Amanda would apply buffs to everyone but kept her primary focus on the strongest member of the party. Everything they ran into so far seemed manageable, and Shadow came out at times to rip right through a beast.

[Congratulations, you have received 50 experience points for defeating a bronze beast for the first time. You are now at 100/300 Experience]

’Hey system, will I only receive experience points for the first time I kill a specific beast? Like say that bronze boar Shadow just defeated, say there was a gold equivalent, would I get points for killing a gold boar?’

[All new first kills at a new rank will give you an experience bonus. You will receive a much smaller amount for each kill you or your familiars complete, but as I originally told you when you reincarnated, one of the best ways to level up is to kill beasts.]

’Awesome, that’s good news.’

They continued to walk deeper into the forest and realized the fog was becoming more dense. They started hearing large, heavy footsteps that caused the ground to vibrate slightly, despite the noise originating miles away. Adam noticed something in the distance that didn’t look like they could easily handle.

"Guys, this can’t be good... I can sense way too many big creatures fighting or moving very sneakily and I’m not sure we should engage any of these groups in a fight."

The group agreed and started retracing their steps back through the eerie forest with Shadow’s help. They noticed different types of beasts fighting and Tyler started to get a strange feeling about something. The more he watched, the more he concluded that this wasn’t just random fighting. It seemed to have different groups fighting together with some spying to pass on information. The pattern just seemed consistently obvious but also impossible to follow.

’A complete Paradox...’ He thought.

"GET DOWN," Adam screamed.

Two giant hellhounds jumped toward Tyler and Amanda who ducked just in time. Sophie didn’t hesitate, freezing one of the hellhound’s feet. Adam used blood skills to send fang-like attacks, slightly injuring the other beast.

"Shadow, I need you, now please."

"On it!"

"Cast some fireballs as a distraction using that staff of yours. They might not be powerful, but it’ll free up the others to do some damage!" Ash said calmly.

"Sophie, we’re going to make an opening for you! Amanda, buff her and try to debuff the hellhounds. If you can’t, don’t worry, they seem pretty strong!" Tyler ordered calmly.

"Adam keep doing what you’re doing, I think we should be able to handle this. Thanks for the heads up or I would be dead!"

"No problem bro, I can’t believe I didn’t see them. They must have some stealth mechanism or something. Just glad I caught them at the last second!"

The hellhound shattered out of Sophie’s ice spell, but she cast a more powerful one after receiving a buff from Amanda, and it slowly started creeping up the hellhound’s legs. Noticing the opening, Shadow pounced, biting the hound’s neck, causing black blood to fly everywhere until Tyler finally got a notification.

[Congratulations, you have defeated a gold ranked hellhound for the first time. 200 experience points granted. You are now level 3. 0/400 experience. One additional stat point provided in each category.]

As much as he loved the reward, he didn’t have much time to celebrate, let alone think. He needed to ensure his friends and Shadow were safe so he decided to become the bait. He cast several small fireballs at the hellhound with his staff.

His friends immediately knew what he was doing, so Sophie took out her katanas and as Adam’s blood fang attack hit the hellhound, she released a powerful dual swing, covered with ice at the hellhound’s stomach while it leapt through the air. The strike landed cleanly and she used an ice shield to cover herself from the massive amount of black blood flying her and Amanda’s way.

"Thanks everyone, you are amazing!" Tyler yelled, happy with how his new friends were working together so well.

They successfully dealt with the gold ranked surprise attack, but Tyler didn’t know there was still work to be done.
