Professor Vanhorn paid very close attention to the group of four in the back the entire time, jotting down various notes, especially about Tyler and his knowledge of the Land of Summoned Monsters. Adam, Sophie and Amanda explained that every year after winter break, there was a tournament between 8 universities and the winning academy won a bunch of cool prizes, with the best one being a giant magical trophy that added the names of the most valuable members of the tournament.
It was a series of magical contests broken down into categories, all worth various points. There were also individual and team competitions, most notably the dueling tournament, which took place in two divisions: solo and duos. They made their way to the dueling class, which everyone had, including Amanda, despite being a healer.
"Hey Amanda, I’ll team up with you if we have to do any duels today if you want?" Sophie asked politely. She started to feel better after the group made her feel better about her ex-boyfriend.
"Yeah, that would be neat. I could heal you and throw some buffs your way!" She said cheerfully.
"Well, Tyler, guess that leaves you and me buddy. A phoenix and a snake would probably make a pretty cool team, don’t you think?"
"Meh. Tell him yes but I’d rather fight alone. I think we could do pretty well in the solo tournament and if we’re going to be doing duos, I think you’d be better suited with Sophie or someone else that uses abilities. That way my buffs impact the user’s magical ability. Buffing other beasts only goes so far. I can enhance his vision, make him faster, a little bit stronger where with Sophie, we could turn her into a powerhouse."
"Thanks for being straightforward. How long does it usually take you to get to adolescence?"
"Depends on you, bud. The more you level up, especially with this unique system thing, I think the quicker I will grow up, if that makes any sense?"
Tyler laughed. "I don’t think anything in this world makes that much sense right now Ash."
"What are you laughing about?" Adam asked while shaking his head.
"Oh, I can talk to Ash telepathically. He’s really funny."
The group continued chatting as they walked to their next class together, which they all shared. The dueling class. It was everyone’s favorite class because they got to hone their skills and fight without any repercussions. For the stronger ranked, like Sophie, it would be an easy way to show off their power and cause others to admire them. For the lower ranks, it could be a nightmare. Sophie wasn’t herself while walking with the group, feeling bad about the way she treated Tyler the first few periods and Amanda in homeroom.
"I’m sorry everyone. I feel like a cold-hearted bitch now," Sophie said sadly as her face went pale.
"Huh?" Amanda asked innocently.
"I asked the guys why an elf couldn’t heal herself but if Nurse Becky couldn’t heal you, I just feel like I was really rude and shouldn’t have judged you like that. I’m sorry." Sophie said sincerely.
"Don’t worry about it. I’m used to people thinking I’m useless. Everyone tells me I’m a worthless elf who can only heal and can’t do that well," Amanda said with a frown.
"I told you, you can’t think like that!" Tyler interjected enthusiastically.
"You’re going to buff Sophie and win easily, just watch. If the professor lets anyone duel, you two volunteer first and teach some jerks a lesson!" He added.
Amanda smiled and nodded as the Professor finally made his way out into the dojo-like classroom. It was large, had weapons and armor all over the walls and had over 200 students in the class, which was much larger than the typical 50-100 in the other classes. He walked out slowly, wearing a traditional black and red kimono with the school’s AA logo on his right chest side.
He turned, bowed to the class and introduced himself.
"Hello. I am professor Tanquin Sanju. I am a demon who will be teaching you the art of dueling. First, I need four volunteers."
Sophie raised her and Amanda’s hand. "We’re up to duel someone."
Amanda looked nervous, but Tyler and Adam gave them a reassuring thumbs up and smile.
"Excellent, and who would like to fight these two brave students?"
"We got this!" A muscular looking guy said to his buddy, laughing while they walked up to the small stage the professor stood on.
"First, you must change into your attire. In small groups, everyone please go find your name on a cubicle in the far right corner of the room. It will have your training clothing in it. The male changing room is on the right, the female is on the left. We will let these volunteers go first."
Everyone took their time and got changed into their formal training gear, which was a black karategi. All of the belts were white, which caused some students to complain.
"Oh come on, do I really have to start out with this stupid thing again?"
"Hush, all students will start at the same level as this is formal magical dueling, not martial arts."
Once everyone was changed, Tyler and Adam made sure to get near the front to see the duel up close. The teacher explained the rules to everyone: that the two students should fight without holding back but only to injure or disarm their opponent, not to severely hurt them or kill them. He allowed the four volunteers to grab a weapon of their choice off the wall, as well as armor if they wished. Sophie helped Amanda pick out a staff with a light chest piece. She chose a pair of katanas for herself and wore no armor.
The pair of muscular boys laughed. They both chose not to wear armor. The green haired student chose a broadsword and the red haired one chose no weapon.
"Wait, why wouldn’t he choose a weapon? Is he solely going to rely on his abilities," Tyler asked Adam.
"Probably, but that’s a big mistake. Sophie is an ability user and she chose katanas. I bet she can cast some wicked spells while using the blades. This is going to be a quick fight I think." Adam smirked.
