"My Lord, you cannot let this stand!" Feng shouted, his face flushed with rage. "That peasant humiliated me in front of my own squad. He paraded me around this hall like a common scullery maid. I am the commander of the royal guard. I demand justice. Give me the right to discipline him for his insolent behavior."
Lord Jian calmly picked up his porcelain teacup. He took a sip of the warm tea and placed the cup back onto its saucer.
"You will do no such thing, Feng," Jian replied, keeping his voice level. "The boy is a recognized companion of Princess Lune. The Azure Moon Kingdom relies heavily on the Lumiere Dynasty for our military budget and secure trade routes. If we upset the princess by punishing her guest, she can easily influence her royal court to withdraw their financial support."
Feng clenched his armored fists. "I refuse to let a commoner trample my honor and mock the knights of this kingdom. If the law will not punish him, I will ensure he learns his proper place in this world."
He turned on his heel and marched out of the dining hall, his metal boots stomping loudly against the marble floorboards.
Lihua watched the furious man leave the room. She let out a tired sigh and turned her attention to her brother.
"Why did you ever appoint him to lead the royal guard, Jian?" Lihua asked, resting her hands on the table. "His temper clouds his judgment. He cannot see past his own fragile ego."
Jian set his teacup aside. "He possesses a shortsighted view of politics, but he takes his sworn duty to the crown seriously. He is fiercely loyal to our family."
Lihua shook her head. "You confuse true loyalty with blind obsession. True loyalty means sacrificing personal pride for the greater good of the kingdom. Feng is merely obsessed with his own status and authority."
She looked at the empty archway where the commander had disappeared.
"A loyal hound protects the estate from wolves," Lihua explained, offering a profound piece of advice. "An obsessed hound will bite a valuable guest just to prove it rules the yard. That kind of devotion contradicts our safety. It always ends in a tragedy."
Commander Feng marched down the dimly lit corridors of the eastern guest wing. He kept his hand resting heavily on the pommel of his sword. Reaching the main checkpoint of the student quarters, two palace sentries crossed their spears to halt his advance.
"State your business, Commander," the left sentry requested.
"I am simply conducting a routine patrol," Feng replied, keeping his tone authoritative. "I am verifying the guests are secure in their chambers."
The sentries lowered their weapons and allowed him entry. Feng walked down the plush carpeted hallway. Two armored guards stood at attention outside each heavy oak door.
He stopped at every single room to inquire about the occupants. The guards confirmed Arthur, Marco, Maximus, and Elizabeth were resting quietly inside.
He eventually reached the chamber assigned to Solomon. The wooden door stood wide open. There were no guards stationed outside the threshold. Feng stepped into the room and quickly scanned the space. The bed remained perfectly made. The chamber was entirely empty.
’Where did that arrogant peasant go?’ Feng thought, gripping his scabbard tightly.
He spun on his heel and marched toward the premium wing housing the royals and the pavilion master. Finding the guards stationed outside Syra and Yue’s chambers, he confirmed their presence.
However, the corridor leading to Princess Lune’s suite sat completely vacant.
Feng approached the nearest patrol squad. "Why are there no sentries posted outside Princess Lune’s chamber?"
"The princess never returned from the dining hall, Commander," a guard responded, bowing his head.
"Where did she go?" Feng demanded, his voice rising in anger. "Why are you standing around so calmly?"
"Her Highness is currently with her guest," the guard explained. "She explicitly ordered us not to disturb them under any circumstances."
Feng grabbed the guard by the collar of his uniform. "How can you let her wander the estate like that? The Crimson Bone Sect is actively hunting royals! It is incredibly dangerous!"
"We could not go against a direct royal decree, Commander," the guard pleaded, raising his hands defensively. "Furthermore, she is not unprotected. Two knights from the Moon-Shadow Sentinels are watching over them from a distance."
Feng released the man’s collar and shoved him backward. "Where did they go?"
"I cannot tell you that," the guard replied, smoothing his crumpled uniform. "The Moon-Shadow Sentinels are exclusively handling Princess Lune’s security detail tonight. We are forbidden from interfering with their operations."
Realizing his plan to corner the boy in his room was ruined, Feng turned around and stormed away in pure frustration. He needed to find the commoner and teach him a lesson without the elite sentries interfering.
He navigated the outer colonnades to clear his head. The cool night breeze brushed past his silver armor.
Suddenly, he stopped walking. He looked through the open marble archways overlooking the lower tiers of the palace. Down by the illuminated training grounds, two figures clad in pristine white armor stood perfectly still on a stone balcony.
The Moon-Shadow Sentinels kept their vigil over the dirt rings below.
A sinister smirk stretched across Feng’s face.
’Found you,’ Feng noted, staring at the distant sentries. He adjusted his sword belt and marched toward the descending stairwell.
Down in the training grounds, Solomon walked alongside Lune over the compacted dirt. The bronze owl fluttered faithfully behind his shoulder, capturing the vast array of weapon racks and polished wooden dummies.
The translucent blue interface lit up as the audience commented.
[Tyler_Klare: a romantic walk in the training yard lol.]
[Scott_Carson: bro escaped the dining hall just to look at swords.]
[Stinosaurus: Solo Man only knows how to do one thing.]
[ZoomTech: are we getting another spar tonight?]
[Fatal_Beauty: Lune brought him to his favorite place.]
[Mezz_3863: best spot for date with Solo Man.]
Solomon stretched his arms and rolled his neck. "I expected you to drag me to another flower garden or a library. I appreciate you bringing me here instead."
Lune walked beside him with her hands clasped neatly behind her back. "You clearly looked bored out of your mind during the banquet. I figured you would prefer to inspect the royal armory and the training rings."
