Chapter 194: Mystery Behind the Flying Assassins

"Where exactly are you guys coming from?" Solomon asked.

Instead of offering a polite response, the assassins charged. Their attacks were flawlessly coordinated. As soon as one cultist swung a blade, another prepared to strike from the flank, perfectly timing their movements so a new attacker stepped in the moment the previous one retreated.

Solomon anchored his boots against the stone and executed the second form of the Eden Imperial Sword Arts. He snapped his hips forward and unleashed a devastating horizontal sweep, slashing every single attacker down in one massive arc of kinetic energy.

He lowered his greatsword and looked up once again to make sure his eyes were functioning correctly. There was literally nothing above him besides clouds and stars.

He then walked to the edge of the watchtower and glanced down into the courtyard below. He saw nothing out of the ordinary.

"Are you guys seeing the same thing as me?" Solomon asked the chat, genuinely confused by the physics of the ambush. "Did I miss a teleportation circle or something?"

[Grim: maybe they have invisibility magic?]

[Scott_Carson: spatial portals?]

[Tyler_Klare: camouflage cloaks for sure.]

[M00N: they are dropping out of thin air.]

Solomon refuted the theories one by one. "There are no spatial mana ripples, and true camouflage still leaves a visual distortion in the moonlight."

Just then, a loud, bone-crunching thud echoed from the side of the tower.

Solomon looked around the immediate platform and found no one. ’Do they really have some sort of advanced camouflage technique?’

He leaned entirely over the stone railing to inspect the exterior walls of the tower from all sides. Looking down at the adjacent wall, he finally spotted the source of the noise.

A masked assassin was physically stuck inside the stone wall, having crashed headfirst into the solid architecture at high speed.

Solomon blinked in realization. He turned his head and spotted another assassin flying completely horizontally through the night sky, soaring directly toward his position on the watchtower.

Solomon simply raised Eden’s Penance and pointed the tip of the executioner’s sword straight out over the railing. The flying assassin sailed through the air and smoothly impaled himself directly onto the Eden’s Penance.

The very next second, another cultist came hurtling along the exact same trajectory. Solomon kept the blade perfectly steady, allowing the second man to impale himself right behind the first.

He stacked the bodies onto his sword until the blade ran entirely out of space. It looked exactly like chunks of meat stacked onto a spit right before being grilled over a fire.

Solomon swung his greatsword in a downward arc. The bodies slid smoothly off the metal and fell to the courtyard below.

He turned his attention back to the floating bronze owl. "I think I know exactly where they are coming from."

Solomon vaulted over the stone railing and jumped down to the lower tier of the palace, sprinting rapidly toward the direction the assassins were flying from.

Solomon sprinted across the outer battlements. He glanced up whenever a dark shadow passed over the moon to make sure he followed the correct trajectory.

He vaulted over the palace walls and climbed down the craggy mountain exterior. Reaching a hidden clearing deep within the surrounding forest, he finally discovered the mystery behind the flying assassins.

Dozens of rune-infused catapult structures lined the clearing. Makeshift wooden towers and massive tension rings anchored the launch pads. Masked assassins stood in neat rows, stepping onto the catapults to be launched directly toward the palace from miles away.

’How could a hundred people build this without the royal patrols noticing?’ Solomon wondered, leaning against a tree trunk. ’The border security is truly terrible. Or... corrupted.’

He stepped out of the foliage and rested Eden’s Penance against his shoulder. "Good evening. Are you guys selling tickets for the flight?"

The assassins responded by drawing their curved sabers and charging at him with lethal intent.

Solomon anchored his boots into the dirt. He swung the massive executioner’s sword without utilizing his aura.

A cultist thrust a spear at his chest. Solomon used the ninth step of the Azure Crane Blade, performing a rapid downward chop to deflect the spear tip into the ground, and transitioned instantly into a spinning deflection. Slipping into the attacker’s blind spot, he chained the movement directly into the first form of the Eden Imperial Sword Arts.

He brought the blade down in a brutal vertical chop. The sword cleaved through the assassin’s collarbone and split his ribcage open, ending his life before the cultist even realized his guard was broken.

Solomon moved fluidly through the chaotic swarm. He redirected their momentum with crane footwork and finished them with the devastating sweeps of the imperial arts. One by one, bodies piled up around his boots as he dismantled the launch site.

Only a handful of assassins remained, and they were scattered all over. Some were hiding, while some were pretending to be dead.

Solomon smashed the rune-infused catapults into splinters with the flat of his blade.

Seeing their equipment destroyed and their numbers decimated, the remaining few dozen cultists broke rank and fled into the dark forest.

Solomon let them run. He hoisted his bloodstained sword and followed their tracks from a comfortable distance.

"This actually reminds me of playing hide and seek with my siblings," Solomon told the floating bronze owl. "She always thought she was hiding, but she left a trail of candy wrappers everywhere."

[1Fizzy: bro is treating assassins like his little sister.]

[James_hayes: the predator hunt begins.]

[Mezz_3863: Solo Man is a menace in the woods.]

[Fatal_Beauty: playing hide and seek with a giant sword.]

[Grim: they cannot escape him.]

He hunted them through the dense trees for the next few hours. The assassins moved incredibly fast, utilizing their cultivation to traverse the difficult terrain.

Solomon picked them off one by one. He dropped from the branches to eliminate stragglers, leaving only a single survivor to lead him to their actual hideout.
