Chapter 226: Fetching Water in the Whispering Wilds

Gideon stepped into the campsite and dropped the massive, freshly hunted deer onto the grass. He wiped a smudge of dirt from his platinum breastplate.

Sir Kulbro followed closely behind, setting his own catch down before immediately pulling a hunting knife from his belt to begin skinning and dressing the meat.

"Commander Feng, how are you still struggling with a simple canvas tent?" Gideon asked, raising an eyebrow at the tangled mess of ropes and fabric. "Leave that for now. Go assist Sir Kulbro with preparing the dinner."

Feng gritted his teeth, his face flushing with absolute fury. ’Why am I even here?!’ he screamed internally. ’I am the Commander of the Royal Guard! Why am I being treated like a common scullery maid in the middle of a cursed forest?!’

He desperately wanted to throw a tantrum and refuse the order. However, he looked over at Sir Kulbro. The four-star knight was diligently skinning the deer without uttering a single complaint or sign of exhaustion. Recognizing he had no valid excuse to avoid the manual labor, Feng clamped his mouth shut, marched over to the fire pit, and begrudgingly began helping with the meat.

"If we are going to prepare a proper stew, we will need fresh water," Gideon noted, glancing around the dry campsite.

Solomon eagerly stepped forward. "I will go fetch the water."

"Very well," Gideon agreed. The paladin closed his eyes, drew his broadsword, and plunged the steel tip directly into the dirt. He channeled a subtle pulse of golden aura into the earth. A few seconds later, he opened his eyes. "There is a flowing river exactly one mile away from our current position."

Solomon looked around the dense, oppressive treeline. "Which direction?"

Gideon turned his head toward the pavilion master. Yue snapped her jade fan open. Instead of unleashing a destructive gale, she waved the fan gently, conjuring a cool, concentrated breeze that ruffled the leaves. She closed her eyes, tracking the subtle shifts in the air currents and moisture levels.

"That way," Yue said, pointing her fan precisely toward the northeast.

Solomon nodded and jogged off in the designated direction.

As he ventured further away from the crackling bonfire, the true nature of the Whispering Wilds revealed itself. The forest was incredibly dark, the thick canopy completely blocking the moonlight.

The silence was occasionally broken by eerie howls, snapping twigs, and the unsettling rustling of unseen creatures stalking through the underbrush.

The terrifying atmosphere did not frighten Solomon in the slightest. In fact, he actively wished he would run into a mutated beast or a hidden monster just so he could test his newly opened shoulder cores.

After walking for roughly fifteen minutes, the distinct sound of rushing water reached his ears. He hurried forward, pushing through the final row of bushes to find a beautiful, rushing river. Following the current upstream, he discovered a massive, cascading waterfall plunging into a deep rocky basin.

Solomon spent the first few minutes simply admiring the serene, untouched beauty of the hidden oasis. However, a sudden logistical problem dawned on him.

"How exactly am I supposed to carry the water back to the camp?" Solomon asked the floating bronze owl. "I did not bring a bucket or a waterskin with me."

The translucent blue interface immediately filled with suggestions.

[James_hayes: use your helmet!]

[1Fizzy: you do not wear a helmet bro.]

[M00N: maybe make a cup out of large leaves?]

[Mezz_3863: just carry it in your hands lol.]

Solomon eventually decided to fashion a makeshift container using some sturdy bark and broad leaves he found near the riverbank.

While he was carefully weaving the leaves together, the chat began throwing out spontaneous challenges.

[System: GoonLord has issued a live challenge! Climb the waterfall! Reward: 1 Golden Throne (2,000 Points).]

Solomon glanced at the screen and shook his head. "Now is not the time to be doing random challenges. The others are waiting for me to bring the water back for dinner."

[System: Tyler_Klare has issued a live challenge! Climb the waterfall! Reward: 2 Golden Thrones (4,000 Points).]

[MattMickyD: bro do it! there might be a secret cave behind the water!]

[Alpha_char: every adventurer guide says there is loot behind the waterfall.]

[Zoomtech: check for treasure Solo Man!]

Solomon let out a long sigh and dropped his makeshift leafy bucket. He simply could not resist the combined temptation of free points and potential loot. "Fine. I will check it out."

He placed Eden’s Penance safely on a dry rock near the riverbank. He stepped into the basin, immediately noticing the rushing current was significantly stronger than he had anticipated. Still, his physical foundation easily overpowered the rushing water.

"I do not want to get my clothes soaked," Solomon told the chat.

Instead of swimming directly through the punishing cascade, he utilized Basic Parkour to scale the jagged rocks bordering the waterfall.

He noticed an immediate difference in his physical capabilities. Pulling his body weight up the slick stones felt incredibly effortless now that his shoulder cores were fully unlocked, feeding raw spiritual energy directly into his arms.

He reached a sturdy ledge near the middle of the cascade and leaped directly behind the curtain of falling water.

His boots landed on solid stone. Just as the chat predicted, a dark, cavernous structure hid perfectly concealed behind the waterfall.

[Brerell: WE CALLED IT!]

[2Lazy2Care: SECRET DUNGEON UNLOCKED!]

[Clayton: go explore it!]

[Nick: loot time!]

Solomon walked deeper into the cave. The air felt stale and cold. He noticed scattered remnants of old campfires, rusted pickaxes, and broken wooden crates, which was clear evidence that prospectors or adventurers had utilized this cavern before abandoning it.

As he ventured further, the ambient light from the waterfall faded entirely. The cave plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

"I cannot see a single thing," Solomon admitted, stopping his advance. "Can you guys see anything on the stream?"

[Frendscham: nope. screen is pitch black.]

[Draken_Korin: completely dark for us too.]

[PandoraLifeweaver: we need a torch.]

Solomon clicked his tongue. "The academy really needs to add some kind of night-vision upgrade for these drones."

[Eric: there actually is a night-vision upgrade in the shop.]

[Kaolafiedgamer: yeah but it is strictly locked for second-year students only.]

Solomon found the restriction completely ridiculous. ’Why lock basic utility features behind a grade wall?’ he thought.

However, he quickly realized the logic. First-year novices were officially supposed to complete easy, beginner-level missions and focus primarily on their classroom studies, rather than delving into dangerous, pitch-black dungeons that required advanced vision.

He resumed walking, dragging his boot along the stone floor to map the path ahead by kicking loose rocks.

Suddenly, his boot kicked a large stone forward. Instead of hearing it clatter against the ground, the rock vanished into the darkness. Several long seconds passed before a faint, echoing splash resounded from far below.

Solomon froze instantly. He stood right on the edge of a massive, unseen abyss. If he had not been kicking rocks, he would have plummeted straight down into the chasm.

"Help me out," Solomon asked the chat. "Send a flashy gift so the owl’s eyes lights up the area for a second."

[System: Mezz_3863: has gifted 1 Diamond Crown (5,000 Points)!]

The massive notification icon flared brightly, illuminating the cavern for a brief moment. Solomon looked down and saw a sheer, terrifying drop leading into an impossibly deep valley hidden within the earth.

"What do you guys think?" Solomon asked, stepping back from the ledge. "Do you think there is some kind of massive monster sleeping down there? Or maybe a hidden treasure vault?"

[Fatal_Beauty: JUMP IN AND FIND OUT!]

[GoonLord: NO DO NOT JUMP IT LOOKS SO SCARY!]

[Ken_Getchell: bro do not risk it without your sword!]

[Simon_Buhr: there is definitely a boss down there.]

Solomon leaned over the edge and shouted into the abyss. "HEY! IS ANYONE DOWN THERE?!"

His voice echoed endlessly against the cavern walls. He laughed out loud at his own absurdity. "It is not like a monster is actually going to understand what I am saying and answer back."

He turned away from the chasm and began walking back toward the waterfall. "I would love to go down there and explore it, but now is definitely not the time. People are waiting for me. Maybe I will come back to this place later when I have more time."

He exited the cave, climbed down the rocks, and retrieved Eden’s Penance. He quickly fashioned his leaf bucket, filled it with fresh river water, and hurried back to the campsite.

Meanwhile, deep within the pitch-black abyss Solomon had just shouted into, the darkness shifted.

Massive, terrifying silhouettes stirred in the freezing depths. Mutated beasts and ancient monsters awakened from their slumber, their glowing red eyes snapping open.

Yet, despite the loud intrusion from above, the creatures refused to advance up the cavern walls. They cowered in the shadows, seemingly terrified of something lurking even deeper within the chasm.

Or perhaps... they were guarding it.

Far below the roaming monsters, at the absolute bottom of the freezing abyss, a massive structure of pristine, unbreakable ice dominated the cavern floor. Frozen solid within the center of the glacier was a humanoid figure, bound entirely in glowing magical chains, trapped in an eternal, perfect seal.

The figure had pointy ears and ‌fangs. And on her head... was a crown.
