Lust Meter System: Conquering Beauties

Chapter 287: Dinner Date (Kelly’s Edition)

The restaurant sat behind a wall of glass on a corner lot, steel accents and warm wood paneling glowing under low light, a line of cars idling out front as valets jogged back and forth in red jackets.

Liam handed over the keys and the valet paused a beat too long before pulling off, glancing back over his shoulder at the car like he was trying to place it.

Liam offered Kelly his arm and she took it, her heels clicking against the polished stone path while a group of women in cocktail dresses laughed loudly near the entrance, waiting on their own table.

Inside, the place was fuller than Liam expected for a Thursday, every booth along the far wall occupied, a low buzz of conversation rolling under the music piped in from somewhere overhead.

Servers moved fast between tables with trays balanced high, and off to the side, through a wide pass window, the kitchen churned in tight, practiced motion, a line cook barking something in Italian while another plated food with quick, exact movements.

Somewhere near the bar a cork popped, followed by a small round of applause from a table celebrating something.

The host stood at a podium checking names against a tablet.

Liam gave his, and the host scrolled, frowned slightly, scrolled again.

"Give me one second." He tapped the screen, and after a beat his face cleared. "Ah, found it, wrong spelling on our end. My apologies. Right this way."

"For a second there I thought we were about to be that couple standing awkwardly by the door," Liam muttered as they followed the host back, weaving past a table where an older couple sat close together, heads bent over the same dessert menu, and another where a group of four argued cheerfully over a bottle of wine, one of them laughing loud enough to turn a few heads.

Kelly laughed, bumping his shoulder with hers. "You handled it fine." A beat, her tone shifting just slightly, half teasing, half genuinely curious. "Also, are we a couple now?"

"Of course we’re a couple," Liam said, like it wasn’t even a question worth asking.

Kelly didn’t say anything back, just pressed her lips together to hide a smile, a warmth rising in her cheeks she couldn’t quite talk down.

The host led them to a booth near the back with a clear view of the kitchen, candlelight low on every table, a server refilling water glasses two tables over with the kind of practiced ease that came from doing it a hundred times a night.

Liam reached the table first and pulled the seat out for Kelly, waiting with one hand resting on the back of it until she settled in and smoothed her dress under her.

Only then did he round the table and take his own seat across from her, the noise of the room settling into something warm and background-level around them.

She looked around slowly, taking it in, the clink of silverware, a burst of laughter from the bar, a waiter weaving past with a tray of drinks held high over his shoulder.

"Okay, wow," she said, a soft laugh escaping her. "This place is really nice, Liam. I mean it. I wasn’t expecting this."

"I’m glad you like it," he said. "I wanted tonight to actually feel like something. Not just us grabbing food somewhere."

Kelly’s expression softened, something a little shy in it now. "Can I be honest? I would’ve been just as happy eating at your place. I want you to know that. It’s not like I needed all this to have a good time with you."

"I know," Liam said. "I just wanted to do something special for you."

That got a real smile out of her. "Well, you did," she said. "Picking me up, dealing with that reservation mix-up without losing it, bringing me somewhere like this, you did a great job tonight. Honestly."

Liam felt his ears warm and glanced down at the table a second before answering. "Had a good friend help me put it together, if I’m being honest."

Kelly grinned. "Kelvin’s a really great friend, then."

"It wasn’t Kelvin."

She tilted her head. "Okay, who then?"

A server passed close behind Kelly’s shoulder with a tray of plated steaks, steam curling off them, and Liam waited until the guy cleared before he answered, turning his water glass slowly.

"Her name’s Elena."

"Her," Kelly repeated, drawing it out, eyebrows lifting. "Oh. She’s a she."

"Yeah."

"Okay." Kelly sat back, folding her hands on the table while somewhere behind her the table celebrating something broke into another round of laughter. "So who’s Elena?"

"Someone I’ve known a while," Liam said. "We’ve got real history. Not just a passing thing. I care about her, Kelly. I’m not going to sit here and pretend she doesn’t mean something to me, because she does. But that doesn’t take anything away from what’s happening right now, between us. I wanted you to hear it from me straight, not find out some other way."

Kelly was quiet a moment, turning her fork slightly by her plate, the background noise of the restaurant humming on around the stillness between them. "Okay," she said finally, her voice even, though the earlier lightness had dimmed. "I appreciate you telling me straight up." She looked at him, steady. "Did you two ever sleep together?"

Plain, no dramatics behind it, like she’d already decided she’d rather know than sit there wondering.

Liam held her eyes. "Yeah," he said. "We did."

Kelly nodded slowly, gaze dropping to the table before it came back up. "Okay," she said again, quieter.

"Kelly."

"I’m not mad," she said, and she almost sounded like she believed it herself. "I’m not going anywhere, if that’s what you’re worried about. It’s just a lot to sit with all at once."

"That’s not what matters here," Liam said.

"I know it’s not supposed to," Kelly said. "I’m also guessing she’s really rich?"

"How do you—"

"Know that?" She cut him off before he could finish, shaking her head slightly, more at herself than at him. "It’s simple. Nobody hands somebody a car like that unless money doesn’t mean anything to them. People don’t just do that. So yeah, she’s rich, isn’t she. Actually rich." She paused, quieter now. "I don’t care about that, you know that? It’s not about the money for me."

"Doesn’t stop it from being in my head, though. Sitting here in this dress, in a place like this, thinking about someone who can give away a car and not blink."

Liam reached across the table and took her hand, waiting until she looked at him, the restaurant carrying on loud and unbothered around the small, quiet weight of the moment between them. "You’re not just a someone i just know." he said. "Not to me. I’m not sitting here comparing you to anybody. I wouldn’t have driven that car to your building tonight if being with you was some consolation prize." He paused, softer. "And for what it’s worth, Elena knows about you. She knows we’re seeing each other. She doesn’t have a problem with it."

Kelly blinked, surprised. "She knows about me?"

"She does."

"And she’s fine with it?"

"Completely."

Kelly let out a breath, something in her face loosening. "Okay," she said. "That actually helps. I don’t know why, but it does."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah." A real smile came back to her face. "I’m still going to think about her sometimes. Not going to pretend I won’t. But I’m not letting it ruin tonight."

"That’s fair," Liam said.

She squeezed his hand once before letting go, and a moment later their own waiter arrived, setting the plates down with a quiet flourish while, two tables over, someone’s chair scraped back and a round of birthday singing started low and a little off-key, drawing a few amused glances from nearby tables.

Kelly laughed at the sound of it, some of the last tension easing fully out of her shoulders, and twirled a bit of pasta around her fork, blowing on it before taking a bite, closing her eyes for a second in a way that made Liam smile before he’d even picked up his own fork.

"Okay, wow," she said, chewing. "This is really good. You have to try it."

She held her fork out across the table, and Liam leaned forward and took the bite, the birthday song finishing behind them to a small round of applause and laughter.

They talked through the rest of the meal about smaller things, her professor’s habit of mispronouncing names on purpose, the bet with Kelvin he still refused to explain, the restaurant filling in and thinning out around them as tables turned over, a couple leaving hand in hand near the door, a new group settling into the booth the birthday party had vacated.

At one point she reached across the table and took his hand without thinking about it, thumb brushing his knuckles while she talked, and he let it stay there while the candle between them burned low and the noise of the room folded into something comfortable and far away.

By the time the waiter came to clear their plates, most of the earlier crowd had thinned, just a handful of tables left, the kitchen visible through the pass window slowing its pace for the night.

"I shouldn’t," Kelly said, glancing at the dessert menu. "But if you get something, I’m stealing bites."

"Wouldn’t expect anything less," Liam said.

She smiled, reaching for her water glass, no hesitation left in her.

"So," she said, setting it down, something playful back in her voice. "Tell me about your childhood. I’m just hoping you don’t have a childhood crush at this point i won’t be shocked."

"Urhmm... about that." Liam said, grinning.

"Liam!."

"Kelly."

She laughed, throwing her napkin across the table at him, and he caught it out of reflex, laughing too, the restaurant quieting down around them, candles burning low on the emptying tables, the two of them still tucked into their corner like the night had no particular hurry to end.
