Meanwhile, Goddess Yami had been standing quietly through the entire confrontation, watching her father struggle against the darkness while the Swayamvara that was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of her life had suddenly turned into a tense standoff.

She could see the anger in Surya Dev’s eyes, but she could also understand the position he had been forced into.

Kandarpaasura had deliberately chosen his moment, and if they rejected him now, he could turn the entire realm into a battlefield.

Yami finally stepped forward.

"Father."

Surya Dev looked at her.

Yami’s expression was calm, even though the darkness surrounding them was still making her uneasy.

"Let the Swayamvara continue."

Surya Dev stared at his daughter for a moment.

"Yami..."

"I understand the danger,"

She said quietly.

"But if this ceremony is supposed to be my choice, then let me make that choice. Let him participate."

The hall became silent.

Yami then looked toward Kandarpaasura.

"If he truly believes that he deserves the opportunity to compete for my hand, then let him stand among the other suitors and prove it according to the rules of the Swayamvara."

Kandarpaasura’s eyes narrowed slightly.

He had expected resistance.

He had expected Surya Dev to refuse him.

He had even been prepared for another confrontation.

But Yami’s answer had given him exactly what he wanted.

A slow, satisfied smile appeared across his face.

Surya Dev looked at his daughter for several long moments.

He clearly didn’t like the situation, but he also knew that forcing her to make a different decision would defeat the very purpose of the Swayamvara.

Finally, he nodded.

"Very well."

His voice carried across the hall.

"The Swayamvara will continue."

Kandarpaasura’s smile widened.

"Wise decision, Surya Dev."

Surya Dev gave him a cold look.

"Do not mistake my decision for acceptance of your actions. You will participate under the rules of the Swayamvara, and if you violate them, there will be consequences."

Kandarpaasura simply chuckled.

"I understand."

Yami turned toward the ceremonial area.

The garland that had fallen from her hands still lay on the ground.

She slowly walked toward it and picked it up.

The entire assembly remained silent as she returned to her position.

The music had stopped.

The celebrations had disappeared.

The realm was still covered in darkness.

Yet the Swayamvara had not ended.

Kandarpaasura stepped forward and took his place among the other suitors, his confidence almost palpable.

Devara watched him carefully from across the hall.

Their eyes met.

Neither man looked away.

Kandarpaasura gave him a faint smile.

Devara’s expression remained completely calm.

The Swayamvara was about to continue.

The Swayamvara continued, though the atmosphere inside the ceremonial hall was nothing like it had been moments earlier.

The music had stopped, the cheerful conversations had disappeared and the golden radiance of Surya Lok was still buried beneath Kandarpaasura’s unnatural darkness.

Yet the ceremony itself continued because Yami had chosen to proceed.

She slowly began walking again, holding the garland in both hands.

One by one, she passed the remaining suitors.

Kandarpaasura watched her closely.

He was completely certain of himself.

In his mind, Yami had no real choice. Her father was suffering, the entire realm was drowning in darkness and thousands of people were now depending upon her decision.

Surely, he thought, she would eventually understand that choosing him was the easiest way to end all of it.

But Yami didn’t even look at him.

She walked straight past Kandarpaasura.

His confident expression immediately changed.

"Yami."

She continued walking.

Kandarpaasura’s voice became louder.

"If you refuse me, this darkness will remain."

Yami stopped for only a moment.

Kandarpaasura smiled, believing he had finally gained her attention.

"You heard me, Your father is suffering Your people are trapped in darkness. You can end all of this simply by choosing me."

Yami slowly turned her head.

Her expression was calm.

"You came here and placed my family and my realm in danger."

Kandarpaasura’s smile faded slightly.

"And now you expect me to reward you for it?"

She turned away from him and continued walking.

Kandarpaasura’s expression hardened.

"You are making a mistake."

Yami didn’t answer.

She continued toward Devara.

The closer she came, the quieter the entire hall became.

Devara watched her approach without saying a word.

He could see the determination in her eyes.

She had already made her decision long before Kandarpaasura entered the realm.

Behind them, Goddess Chaya was attempting to deal with the darkness.

As the goddess associated with shadow itself, she should have been one of the beings most capable of interacting with it.

She could move through the darkness without difficulty, and the shadows recognized her presence.

But something was wrong.

Chaya raised her hand and attempted to command the darkness surrounding the palace.

"Withdraw."

Nothing happened.

She frowned and tried again, this time using her divine energy to force the shadows back.

The darkness moved slightly.

Then it returned.

Chaya’s expression became increasingly puzzled.

"This isn’t ordinary darkness."

She attempted to pull the shadows toward herself, but they simply ignored her command.

It was almost as though the darkness did not recognize her authority.

She could enter it.

She could move through it.

She could sense it.

But she could not control it.

Chaya slowly lowered her hand.

"I cannot command it."

Sandhya looked toward her.

"But you are the Goddess of Shadow."

"I know."

Chaya stared at the darkness surrounding them.

"That is precisely why this is troubling."

Her own divine shadows responded to her.

This darkness did not.

It belonged to something else.

Something that had imposed its own will upon it.

Meanwhile, Yami had finally reached Devara.

She stopped before him.

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

The darkness surrounding the hall seemed to disappear from their minds.

Devara could see the determination in her eyes.

He didn’t ask her whether she was certain.

He didn’t need to.

Yami had already made her choice.

She slowly lifted the garland.

And somewhere behind them, Kandarpaasura’s confident expression finally began to crack.

Kandarpaasura’s confidence began to crack the moment Yami continued walking toward Devara.

"Wait."

She didn’t stop.

Kandarpaasura’s voice grew louder.

"Yami, I am speaking to you!"

Still, she continued forward.

The Asura’s face twisted with frustration. He had expected fear. He had expected hesitation. He had expected her to understand that the fate of the entire realm was effectively in his hands.

Instead, she walked past him as though his threat meant nothing.

"Think carefully!"

Kandarpaasura shouted in anger.

"Your father is suffering because of my darkness. Your people are trapped in it. If you choose him, I will leave this realm exactly as it is!"

Yami stopped in front of Devara.

Kandarpaasura clenched his fists.

"Are you even listening to me?"

Yami didn’t answer.

She simply looked at Devara.

There was no fear in her eyes now.

Only certainty.

She slowly lifted the garland and placed it around Devara’s neck.

For a heartbeat, the entire hall remained completely silent.

Then Yami smiled.

"I choose him."

The words carried through the hall.

The Swayamvara was over.

Devara looked down at the garland around his neck before looking back at Yami.

A warm smile appeared on his face as he understood that, despite everything Kandarpaasura had done, she had refused to allow fear to decide her future.

Around them, the reactions began.

Ganga smiled proudly.

Bhudevi’s expression softened with happiness.

Karna let out a quiet laugh.

Yama smiled broadly, while his wife exchanged an amused glance with the other members of the family.

Even several of the Devas who had been tense moments earlier began to relax.

But Kandarpaasura was staring at them in disbelief.

His face slowly turned red with anger.

"You..."

His voice trembled.

"You actually chose him?"

Yami turned toward him.

Kandarpaasura pointed angrily at Devara.

"Him?"

He laughed bitterly.

"That man?"

His gaze moved over Devara from head to toe.

"Do you even understand what you have rejected?"

He spread his arms.

"I am Kandarpaasura! I have spent years building my power. I possess enough strength to engulf this entire realm in darkness. I have brought Surya Lok itself to its knees, and you rejected me for..."

He pointed toward Devara.

"...a mere man?"

Devara’s expression remained calm.

Kandarpaasura’s anger only grew.

"What does he possess that I don’t?"

He looked toward Yami.

"I can command darkness itself! I have an army that cannot be permanently destroyed while I live! Even the gods have to consider carefully before interfering with me!"

His voice echoed throughout the hall.

"And you chose him?"

Yami didn’t respond immediately.

She simply stood beside Devara.

Kandarpaasura looked at Devara again with open contempt.

"What are you?"

Devara remained silent.

Kandarpaasura scoffed seeing the silence.

"You look like nothing more than a human king who happened to receive the favour of the gods."

He pointed toward the garland.

"You think wearing that makes you worthy of her?"

The hall became tense again.

Devara finally looked directly at him.

"You seem to have misunderstood something."

Kandarpaasura narrowed his eyes.

Devara touched the garland resting around his neck.

"Yami wasn’t choosing the strongest person in the room."

He glanced toward Yami.

"She was choosing the person she wanted."

Kandarpaasura’s face hardened.

"That doesn’t make sense."

"It doesn’t have to make sense to you."

Devara’s voice remained calm.

"It only had to make sense to her."

Kandarpaasura stared at him, his anger now barely contained.

Then he laughed again, but there was no amusement in it this time.

"You will regret humiliating me."

The darkness surrounding the realm suddenly became thicker.

The celestial lamps flickered.

Several Devas immediately raised their weapons.

Kandarpaasura looked around the hall.

"You have chosen your husband."

His gaze settled on Yami.

"Now let’s see whether you can live with that choice."

The darkness pulsed around him.

But this time, Devara stepped forward.

His expression had finally lost its earlier patience.

"You were given the chance to participate."

He looked toward Kandarpaasura.

"You lost. Now... Accept it."

Kandarpaasura’s eyes burned with rage.

"Never."

The darkness surged.

And the celebration that had been meant to end with a wedding announcement suddenly stood on the edge of becoming a war.
