Mindless Beasts

Chapter 48: Ambushed in the sunken garden (3)

The jackals just stared, their eyes appeared motionless, but Sly wasn’t a fool he could feel their deadly intent from across the grass.

Now Sly knew what it felt like to be a gazelle with a broken leg near a pack of hungry feral hyenas.

Sly tried to remember what he read about these spirit beasts but drew blanks.

Luckily Mimosa came to his rescue then went right back to sleep.

Belonging to the Canidae family, Jackals are much closer to being relatives of dogs, wolves and foxes.

Typically on the smaller side for predators, jackals usually live in pairs and mate for life.

Jackals hunt using stealth, speed, and sharp senses, often working alone or in bonded pairs to catch smaller prey like Sly.

Very opportunistic omnivores that adjust their battle tactics according to their prey and environment.

There were about six jackals in total and their spirit energy burnt through the air like a volcano spewing molten lava and ash.

One of the jackals was larger in height and size and stood out amongst the pack as the undisputed leader, kill him first and the rest would be easily defeated.

They moved with a sharp, trotting gait as they circled Khaldun and Sly.

Giving off the same jade green spirit essence aura as their owner Mr. Hitman.

Their coats vary from golden-yellow to rusty-red with a distinct dark saddle of black hair along their backs.

Most focused their attention on Sly maybe because he seemed like an easier kill out of the two.

Or was it the plant half of the wishbone that kept their eyes slowly closing in straight on Sly Foxx.

Something about Sly’s appearance seemed to make the jackals somewhat restless, and while stalking the couple they kept approaching aggressively in a half circle formation.

The leader of the jackals let out a wailing howl, a deafening high pitch that started as a low growl then ended in a loud piercing wail.

Energized, the other jackals answered in a mimicry of low barks and yaps often heard when the jackals were in danger or got excited.

Khaldun snorted frostily, "Mr. Hitman you look better as a jackal, your little pack of bony fleabags dare to harass me on my first date with Sly I will make you suffer before I snuff out your light. Come out Black Wolf."

Sly sighed, that’s the best name Khaldun could come up with for his spirit beast might as well call it Blackie.

Summoned from the murky depths of Khaldun’s spirit landscape Black Wolf was free at last.

It let a thunderous roar, an escaping hiss just like a giant whirlpool in the midst of treacherous waters.

Black Wolf catapulted out like a wrecking ball taking down the leader of the jackals down with him and separating Mr. Hitman from its underlings.

Khaldun and the Black Wolf must have come to some agreement in Khaldun’s spirit landscape because the Black Wolf was now implicitly obeying his orders with no trace of rebellion.

"Dare to lay your hands on what’s mine Mr. Hitman, you are definitely tired of living!"

Khaldun didn’t hesitate to jump in and started tackling the leader while Black Wolf took care of the rest of the minions.

His left foot kicked out one of Mr. Hitman’s four feet.

Even though Khaldun was fighting Mr. Hitman and his eyes never left the enemy’s gaze subconsciously he also kept an eye on Sly in the periphery of his mind.

Sly was standing at the edge of the fighting standing too precariously close to the battle for Khaldun’s peace of mind.

He was standing still in his white hospital gown with a few drops of red blood from when Khaldun’s blood drained on him.

Sly looked fragile, but alert, sidestepping objects occasionally hurled in his direction by Black Wolf’s tornado.

While distracted, Mr. Hitman sent out a powerful sonic attack that threw Khaldun off his feet.

Then Mr. Hitman lunged at Khaldun with his fans extended ready to rip out Khaldun’s throat.

Khaldun was waiting the moment the jackal landed; he had formed a spirit energy sword that pierced straight through Mr. Hitman’s furry underbelly.

"Who sent you to kill Sly," demanded Khaldun.

Khaldun withdrew the blazing spirit energy from out of the dead hitman’s body who had remained persistently closed mouth until the mercenary drew his last breath.

He searched the Hitman’s body but only found an old faded tattoo with a symbol that looked familiar but Khaldun couldn’t quite place where he had seen it before.

A tattoo of a hand grabbing a serpent wrapped around an ivy covered sword, a very strange design.

The six jackal bodies under Black Wolf vicious attacks were separated and started to flounder when they couldn’t receive orders from their injured leader.

Black Wolf attacked mimicked a powerful cyclone ripping up plants, grass and dust alike.

Moving terrifyingly slowly across the sunken garden.

While pulling the bodies of the five jackals into the midst of the towering tornado.

The jackals’ bodies were flung around and beaten savagely like punching bags within the swirling tornado of S-tier spirit energy.

Only one of the jackals was alive and Mimosa chose that moment to awaken, sending its vines to strangle the last remaining jackal.

When it stopped breathing Mimosa ripped open its stomach and took out what appeared to be a tiny sliver of bone.

No bigger than a capsule and swallowed it, then he explained his actions to Sly.

I just absorbed this spirit beast’s bone essence, it was unalived by me so I can integrate the spirit bone essence to advance my rank. In my weakened state it’s a lot to consume so I will go back to sleep so my body can absorb it slowly. It won’t have much of an impact on you other than to make you feel a bit more lethargic.

The moment Mimosa crawled back inside Sly, he felt drained and tired.

All around them the tranquility of the sunken garden had been destroyed, surrounded by rubble, with plants ripped out at the roots, the Koi reduced to a fish pond that was now half empty.

Sly was about to call out and ask Khaldun if he was alright when their eyes met from opposite sides of the sunken arden.

Something was wrong!

The S-tier alpha’s body was filled with energies that were aggravated by the intense fight.

It was much too powerful for Khakdun to control; it was tearing his insides apart.

Khaldun didn’t seem to have a single uninjured spot on his body, the pain was unbearable, his eyes turned red and his bloodlust soared as he stalked towards Sly.
