Mindless Beasts

Chapter 65: Brave soul

A soft smile came to Jack Winchester’s lips at the mention of his most prized pet. "Snow is recovering peacefully and is currently sleeping, preferring to come alive at night."

"That’s wonderful. I’ll look forward to greeting her later then," replied Sly.

With the curious looks of awe and wonder he was receiving from his classmates, Sly couldn’t tell if they saw him as some kind of Ephedra Popstar or a rare zoo animal.

They were all listening intently to their conversation and a few snorts and snickers broke the silence when he mispronounced Jack’s name.

One brave soul stepped out from the crowd and approached Sly casually.

"Hi, you might not remember me but I’m Cornelius Brown, but everyone calls me Corner. I’m the boy you saved during the admissions test, just wanted to say thanks," stated Cornelius while introducing himself.

Thanks to the head injury he received when Corner’s head smashed repeatedly against the rocks all of his hair had been shaved.

It gave him an egg head look, adding to it was a smattering of freckles and eyes full of mischief and humor making him the resident class clown.

"No need to thank me, Corner, I’m glad you’re still alive and doing fine. You looked so half dead with your clothes ripped to shred making you appear half naked. What happened to you?"

Corner sported a lopsided grin that made him look cute, "Only Sly is allowed to recall me being half naked everyone, I always knew I had sex appeal with my movie star looks. On the real, what really happened was I got hungry and saw an eagle’s nest that looked unattended and filled with huge eggs. Just one of those babies would be enough to fill my stomach and replenish my energy after brawling with some students who tried to off me on the mountainside. But that’s a story for another time. Let’s just say the eagle’s parents returned and they did not take it nicely that they lost one of their little ones to me and the rest is history as you know it."

The class erupted into loud guffaws and laughter at Corner’s inflated ego from Sly’s words, Corner was passable in looks but not exactly hot.

Corner continued, "wipe the drool from the corners of your lips everyone. Only Sly is allowed to think about me naked during class, the rest of you will have to settle for doing it on your own time."

No matter what Corner was definitely one of the funniest guys around and if he failed to make it in the military he could always become a comedian.

Just like that then tension was broken and his classmates surrounded Sly while asking about the events leading up to this morning.

Everyone wanted to know how he met Khaldun and what happened in the sunken garden.

Sly found himself laughing a lot while he avoided answering the majority of the questions.

The impromptu Q & A session came to an abrupt end when the Spirit Guardian who oversaw the combat training entered the gym.

He scolded everyone who neglected their duties as the exercise mats were still unfurled in the corner and the equipment they would be using still had their protective covers on.

Sly had been homeschooled so this was all new to him and he struggled to do even the simplest of pilates exercises as Sly realized he didn’t know most of them.

It was Corner who noticed his distress and discreetly came to Sly’s rescue. "Come on Foxx. You can be my sparring partner."

He helped Sly with the set up, even taking a hold of his hand gently and helped him straighten his posture.

Thirty minutes later Sly was in so much pain from being pressed and bended in positions he never knew existed but were designed to improve his flexibility.

Every time Sly tried to escape from Corner’s hold, he either wrestled Sly or knocked him down so many times he lost count.

"For a beginner that doesn’t know anything you’re doing, pretty okay. Just remember to apply the ointment they hand out at the end of class. Or you are going to wake up with nasty bruises all over your body tomorrow."

"Thanks, I’ll do that," admitted Sly as he struggled to put the equipment back now that warm up was over.

Eyes filled with concern, Corner asked after a few seconds, "after the anniversary celebrations are over the trial immediately starts but don’t take this the wrong way. Just based on the condition of your body, maybe you should apply for an exemption?"

"That’s out of the question for me. I’m currently on probation and performing well in the trials is my ticket out of it. Don’t worry, they arranged extra practice sessions for me before and after classes."

"That’s wonderful but extra sessions with who?"

"Both Verde and Khaldun."

Corner stopped putting away his equipment and turned to face Sly with a look of astonishment. "Verde is an experienced and patient teacher but Khaldun actually agreed to train with you?"

"Yeah... why so shocked?"

"Khaldun is our age but he’s a monster and an absolute fucking legend on campus!"

"Surely you exaggerate."

"Nope, he’s a savage beast and I’m deadly serious. Even though he is a Royal Alpha he doesn’t put on airs, he seems quiet but he only hangs out with his friends, he is reserved but when he fights.... It’s insane! It’s like he becomes possessed by a berserker demon and chases his opponent with relentless pursuit and remains undefeated. You think you’re feeling pain now? Sly, you’re going to wish you were dead by time Khaldun’s done with you."

"You two dawdling over there with the equipment after I gave strict instructions, come to me," that’s how Sly first came face to face with Spirit Guardian Foley.

Foley had a face that always looked pissed off even when he wasn’t angry and it was even harder to tell his age based on looks but he was probably at least five years older than Roy Alice.

With a body like a raging bull Foley was naturally mean spirited and loved to take out his frustrations on the novice class.

Sly was no exception, Foley’s eyes narrowed with mock surprise as he waited until Sly was standing in front of him to finally go off.

"What the actual fuck? No one told me that I would have a guest celebrity making an appearance in combat class today. Sly Foxx, what an honor! It’s hard to even get a glimpse of you in classes since the academy official started. It must be nice to take time out of your busy schedule to grace us with your presence. Speechless? Got nothing to say? Don’t just stand there like your mute. Come to the podium now so that you can help me teach this class."
