Sly hesitated, "Surely, you’re joking. You can’t be serious..."
The little omega was looking around for support but even Corner who normally had a joke for every situation was silent this time around.
In fact even though Corner was standing beside Sly it felt like his soul had left his body under the scrutiny of the strict instructor and only an empty shell stood next to Sly.
Seeing that Corner was useless Sly scanned the rest of the class but it appeared as if they were all scared of Instructor Foley and refused to make eye contact with Sly.
Every bone inside Sly’s defiant body wanted to rebel against the unwarranted oppression.
He didn’t like living under Foley’s nasty spotlight but then an echo of Dean Drakos warning came to mind. Just one strike while on probation and he would be thrown out of the academy.
The little omega’s cheeks became puffed with outrage and it looked like his body was letting out steam as he made his way to the podium.
The whole time Sly was fighting a losing battle inside, every instinct screamed for Sly to tell Instructor Foley to fuck off but to his chagrin he had to stifle the thought.
In a show of composure Sly struggled to fix his face, as his outrage and what he truly thought of Foley was written plainly on his face for all to see.
There was nothing Foley hated more than a defiant omega, his brute face got even uglier and he wanted to stomp the light out of the little omega until Sly had no spark left.
The class that had been so carefree, lively and full of chatter was now so quiet that anyone could hear a pen drop.
Students faced forward, afraid to whisper to companions for fear they would be targeted next by Instructor Foley.
Sly gripped the lectern like he owned it, even lowering the mike to mouth level calmly. So he wouldn’t have to strain his voice when responding to Foley.
Seeing Sly act with grace under pressure more of his classmates began to look favorably in his direction.
Eager to hear what Sly had to say, he won a few sympathetic smiles from his classmates as a thick silence weighed heavily on the hearts of the students.
Foley sneered, "I never joke with novices. I always say what I mean. Now, since you’re standing in front of the class, you may begin."
Sly, "...."
"Come now young Foxx," provoked Foley cheekily.
As he too returned to the podium stepping away from one the many entrances to the gym.
"Tell us about your fabulous guiding strategies."
"My...uhmm strategies?"
"Certainly. As a recently classified B-tier guide coming from a rural area and lacking basic guide knowledge. You must have invented some genius method of guiding to have the confidence to tackle a S-tier alpha sentinel in rampage mode. Don’t you think these strategies would be beneficial to the rest of the class?"
Damn it, Foley was truly Dean Drakos’ junior, it felt like another set down from the Dean of Discipline but this time there was more public exposure.
"I didn’t have a particular strategy in mind, everything just worked out naturally," choked Sly, those words sounded like rubbish even to his ears but how else could he describe it?
"Naturally," Foley repeated with a loud chuckle, "that must be the case since both of you made it out alive. Now what would you have done if Khaldun’s rampage mode attracted a portal?"
Portals were attracted to overpopulated areas filled with humans and rarely opened in the sparsely populated rural areas so Sly had never encountered a portal in his existence.
He wanted to believe that with Khaldun’s help they could defeat any aliens that crawled out of the portal.
But after getting his ass beaten several times by Corner earlier during the practice sparring session. It was obvious his combat skills were subpar and lousy.
Having to admit self-defeat even to himself was difficult so Sly remained quiet.
Not about to let such a juicy situation slide in front of the class Instructor Foley pushed his case even harder with more thought provoking but grueling questions.
"What guiding strategy did you use? When did you notice it was working? What would you change to make it more efficient?"
These were questions Sly could not answer because if he was honest with himself he barely remembered; it was all like a blur to him.
"I suppose you just let the sentinel drain you during guiding? Did you have the combat skills to put up a fight if the sentinel used reverse guiding?"
Why did it sound so offensive the way Instructor Foley implied?
To preserve the remainder of his dignity Sly vehemently protested to no avail, "No!... It wasn’t like that. We are both still alive, aren’t we?"
"That’s because you both got lucky. Students we are at war with the aliens, they want our land, our resources and most especially our lives. Alphas and Omegas may possess more powers, more speed and more strength than a Beta but at the end of the day we are all liquid food to the aliens as we are just living blood bags to them, don’t you forget it!" he shouted at the class.
Foley moved over to face Sly in close proximity as if to use his alpha build to intimidate the weaker omega even further.
Sly didn’t flinch or react, even when Foley leaned over aggressively towards his face, so close that if Foley’s spit flew, Sly could surf a wave.
"Don’t find yourself like young Foxx here lacking basic knowledge and common sense. Ignorance on the battlefield will only lead to your death. Don’t be stupid like this omega where an alien could jump out of a portal and attack but he would be too busy getting drained by a sentinel to notice. Not all aliens look like monsters, the most advanced are capable of replicating human features. These aliens are cunning and deadly. Can anyone in this novice class tell me what makes our enemies more powerful?"
