The caterpillar raised up on its multiple hind legs.
In a bid to fling the doctor off its head and was determined to crush Dr. Jennings under the weight of its body.
Meanwhile Sly used the timely interference to do the only thing he could do while the killer caterpillar was distracted and that was to run away.
Dr. Jennings noted the caterpillar did not give chase when Sly ran away.
Almost as if it was aggressive about its territory and protecting something.
This made him more curious about the carnivorous caterpillars’ unusual behavior.
Known as the Bone Collector this type of caterpillar was normally the cowardly type.
Usually it fed on decaying organic matter and tended to live in groups.
These caterpillars preferred to stay out of the light and hide in small dark spaces.
This caterpillar was so well fed it had become arrogant due to its size.
After eating all of its peers it started eating humans and other unsuspecting larger prey that traversed the area.
A scavenger that fed off the leftovers after a predator such as a spider was finished with its meal.
It would then use the bits that cannot be eaten as a protective casing or shield from other predators.
There was no way that normally small caterpillars could grow to that gigantic size unless it ate a rare spirit essence fruit.
This was good news if Dr. Jennings could find a way to defeat the Bone Collector then he could feed the fruit to Sly.
Hopefully it would reactivate Sly’s plant abilities that remained dormant since Dr. Jenning split the wishbone.
Not wanting to go too far and risk being separated from the doctor again, Sly looked around and saw an old but magnificent looking tree and raised his eyebrows in surprise.
He was immediately drawn to it because everything about the tree was an unusual shade of purple from the bark to the branches.
Sly hid behind this strange tree with a single glowing purple fruit in the shape of a plum.
As much as we wanted to watch the fight between Dr. Jennings and the deadly caterpillar there was something on the tree that captivated him and grabbed his attention
Even Sly could feel the spirit energy radiating from it that told him the fruit was one of the very rare kinds.
The fruit was perched at the end of the limb of one of the highest branches and Sly had a fear of heights.
Still, since Sly cut ties with his father he wouldn’t want to ask his father for anything going forward.
It became abundantly clear to Sly that it was because of this tree that all the plants and animals in the area were large and overgrown.
There was so much abundant spirit essence radiating from the tree, it was definitely a rare treasure.
Perhaps the rare fruit might be very valuable and have some resale value.
This was too much of a good opportunity to waste.
He would face his fear of heights so Sly took a deep breath and started to climb the tree slowly.
From the top of the tree Sly could see a panoramic view of the elevated terrains; several small rivers connected a huge river.
Dramatic ice covered peaks that seemed close but were really miles away.
Atmospheric clear blue skies with deep values that stretched over mountains with steep inclines.
Behind these mountains lay Paradise Military Academy, the school that his father had enrolled him in far away from home. Hopefully he will never have to run into his father’s heir, Victor Duncan.
Sly couldn’t help but think Dr. Jennings was being very optimistic.
When he stated earlier that they would reach the academy by midday,
It was normal size and would have looked like an ordinary plum if Sly couldn’t feel the strong spirit essence radiating from the rare fruit.
A normal human would not feel this power without a spirit bone.
Sly and Ayana had always longed to explore the world and gain spiritual treasures such as the rare plum fruit.
Since they were both so sheltered that they could only see the world from the pages of books.
Sly couldn’t help but revel in the fact that he had managed to do what others only dreamed of accomplishing.
That is, encountering a rare treasure.
Of course, Sly wished that he could have shared this moment with Ayana who had been six years older than him when she passed.
On a normal day with the sun shining down on them Sly would have found more time to appreciate the beauty but not today.
The surface of the tree was very rough and scratched his skin.
With every movement but that was the least what really bothered Sly was all the biting ants.
As if his fear of heights wasn’t enough the tiny purple ants that wouldn’t normally trouble humans were also defensive of its home.
This fruit wouldn’t be so easy to obtain as Sly initially thought.
A nest filled with many underground tunnels dug deep beneath the roots of the purple tree.
Strong spiritual pressure leaked out from that ants nest making Sly perspire with sweat dripping from all his pores.
Sly had to fight the urge to slide down the tree but he was already half way there to the top of the rare fruit tree.
No way was he going to give up and let his efforts go to waste although it would be lying if Sly wasn’t truly considering it.
There were a lot of ants crawling up and down the tree.
Sly hadn’t noticed them before because they blended with the purple color of the tree.
For the most part these tiny purple ants ignored him going about their daily activities
These baby purple ants didn’t seem to have much intelligence so Sly didn’t bother to hide or camouflage himself.
So much spiritual energy in this tree that even normal ants had been affected.
Probably changing color after gorging themselves on the purple fruit and making themselves stronger.
Sly began to move closer and he was almost in arm’s reach of the branch that the purple glowing fruit dangled.
