Monsters Die When Killed

Chapter 445 - 21: Immortal Dragon Scale

"I’m not agonizing over this, Yara."

Shaking his head, Su Zhou replied, "I never agonize. I just worry for others... Without a powerful order to restrain it, evil will only spread unchecked."

"Yara, I’m the son of a Patrol officer. I was born into a Patrol family, raised on law and order. I originally thought that civilization and law were that powerful order, one that could restrain people and make them afraid to commit crimes, and that criminals would inevitably be punished. It’s a man-made Celestial Tribulation, a man-made retribution. It’s just not perfect yet, but I thought it would gradually approach Perfection."

"But when you scale that up to the level of civilizations, that system of law and order breaks down. On such a grand scale, many people can no longer distinguish right from wrong, nor can they judge good and evil. But I see it clearly. It’s only because there isn’t a powerful order—one that transcends civilizations, an even *more* powerful order—to decide what can’t be done, what can be done, what is right, and what is a crime."

Civilization, nations, laws—these are collectives of order greater than any individual, and they can judge the right and wrong between people.

And an even more powerful existence could judge the right and wrong between civilizations, nations, a Race, and even between worlds.

At this thought, Su Zhou’s gaze burned as he looked at Yara. For the first time, he asked directly, "Yara, you Great Beings have more than enough power to act as this order, don’t you? And since even you were Sealed, does that mean there was some ’even greater order’ before you?"

"If It truly exists, why didn’t It establish such a Celestial Tribulation? Why didn’t It perfect this system of order and eliminate the breeding ground for evil in all our worlds?"

’If a power capable of Sealing even Great Beings really exists, then if It set the standard, almost one hundred percent of life in the Multiverse wouldn’t dare to commit evil. It’s like how humans have the power to wantonly harm their own kind—all it takes is a thrown fist—but in modern society, not everyone is willing to resort to violence to solve a problem, even during a verbal argument.’

’That’s the power of order and standards. It can stop the spread of evil, preventing countless minor and trivial evils from ever happening and reducing the occurrence of great evils. Just like in this world—the evil born from the prisoner’s dilemma of mistrust between the Water God, Wind God, and the Earth People would never have had the chance to take root if such a Celestial Tribulation existed.’

Why doesn’t it exist? This Multiverse clearly has powers like the Great Beings! This was the Evil-Devouring Demon Lord’s greatest question.

"It’s so simple, Su Zhou," the sealed Snake Spirit replied with a light laugh. "What you’re asking for is to use the most rigid order, the most heavy-handed methods, to stop all evil from spreading. But have you ever considered that an idea like yours is, in fact, interfering with the ’freedom to do evil’?"

"The freedom to do evil?!" Su Zhou looked at Yara with an expression of utter disbelief. With his mindset, he simply couldn’t comprehend a moment where "doing evil" could even be mentioned in the same breath as "freedom."

’In his view, that potential for evil had no reason to exist at all...’ The Evil-Devouring Demon Lord, the part of him that was a Demon Lord, made him feel this wasn’t even a question. "That kind of freedom is so nauseating it makes me want to vomit! Besides, the very definition of freedom is that it doesn’t interfere with the freedom of others! The freedom to do evil can’t be called freedom at all!"

"The Multiverse is vast, Su Zhou. Your way of thinking is based solely on human civilization—and a human civilization that has yet to venture from its planet into the wider world, at that. You know it yourself, don’t you? Your good and evil are your own and no one else’s."

Yara calmly patted Su Zhou’s neck, where the scales had finished regenerating, with its tail. "The definitions of freedom and evil are the same. If you continue on this path, you will eventually encounter situations that challenge your current ideas... unless you become powerful. So powerful that you can forge your own good and evil into the iron law of this Multiverse."

"In that case, even if you were to castrate the potential for evil from all intelligent life, even if you were to enforce your personal justice through absolute power, you would still be the highest and most benevolent Supreme God."

Having said this, the Snake Spirit chuckled, then slipped back into the groove between Su Zhou’s scales, saying no more.

"True enough."

And Su Zhou couldn’t help but sigh.

’The world of the Extraordinary has infinite possibilities, but only a single standard...’

"Power."

’Without enough power, no will, no desire—whether good or evil—has any chance of being realized.’

After that battle, Su Zhou had never understood the importance of power more clearly than he did at this very moment.

"I hope the Wind God hasn’t started the slaughter yet." He raised his head, looked to the sky, and muttered to himself with a hint of resignation, "That way, I can have a proper talk with it, see if we can work together to get this world back on the right track."

However, when Su Zhou returned to Naisel City, he discovered that his True Body was temporarily unable to revert to its human form. He could only remain in his form as the White Scale Wingless Great Dragon.

After all, the flesh of his True Body was now mostly composed of the Water God’s flesh, not something he had cultivated himself. As a result, this enormous body could not be stored in the Spirit Realm Space according to his True Body Cultivation Method, to be transformed back into when needed.
