Monsters Die When Killed
Chapter 495 - 8: You Can Never Know What Your Ancestors Have Done"What about internal threats?"
In response to Su Zhou, Zhang Qingyun stroked his beard. He nodded, then shook his head. "You have to understand, we’ve never been on good terms with the American Federation, and Ross Country clashed with us at the border decades ago. The world’s major powers are hardly a monolithic bloc. They are our strongest competitors. It’s possible our development is just another arms race, like the global Cold War from decades past."
Su Zhou replied calmly, "The global situation is stable now. The European Union, Ross Country, the American Federation, and us—these major powers are both wary of and cooperative with each other. Before the Spiritual Energy Revival, the resources available on Earth weren’t enough for all of humanity to live in prosperity, which is why we competed. But things are different now."
At this point, he even began to smile. Su Zhou’s face was animated, filled with the characteristic optimism and hope of youth. "But after the Spiritual Energy Revival, resources became extremely abundant. With the boost in productivity from Magic and various Extraordinary materials, humanity has, in fact, lost its reason to compete. For example, after the three nuclear fusion power plants in the South Sea Region came online a while ago, the entire South Asia region gained access to cheap and plentiful electricity. Once that technology is fully popularized, humanity will never have to worry about energy again."
This had happened in Zhengguo while Su Zhou was away in the Reincarnation World. By reverse-engineering the Divine Body of a Golden Crow Immortal God from the past, Zhengguo’s researchers had perfected a nuclear fusion Magic model a year ago. Experimental power plants had already been activated in the coastal regions.
The sun and humanity had never been so close.
"This is basically the prelude to a new industrial revolution! We could even build a Utopia, a Great Unity World! An earthly Heaven where no one has to worry about resources or the future, where everyone is free to pursue their dreams, and where no one ever commits crimes or does evil again!" As he spoke, Su Zhou unconsciously clenched his fists.
Zhang Qingyun could see that Su Zhou’s true goal was encapsulated in that last statement.
He hoped all of humanity could live in Heaven, where no one would ever commit crimes or do evil, and everyone could live without a care in the world.
That was why he was willing to work for Zhengguo, to contribute his strength to this cause.
The way to eliminate all evil wasn’t just to kill evil, but to completely uproot the soil in which it grew.
The Daoist Saint could hear the confusion in Su Zhou’s voice as he asked, "Why don’t we slow down a bit and stabilize the situation gradually? With our power, we could certainly make the world a better place step by step, instead of being so rushed."
The popularization of Cultivation Methods, the Citizen Points System, the nationwide crackdown on crime and corruption, and the healthcare system reforms—all were actions taken by Zhengguo to make the world a better place.
Setting other things aside, the Curse on Shao Qiming and the Curse afflicting Aunt Wen’s legs could have been treated by hospitals in a year or two, even without Su Zhou. Of course, the results of hospital treatment couldn’t possibly compare to the nurturing care Su Zhou provided with the Holy Cross Relic.
But Su Zhou knew something they didn’t.
’If the problem of the Great Seal nearing collapse isn’t solved, the entire world will be destroyed within twenty years. But leaving that aside for a moment... I will solve this problem myself. The Daoist Saint and the others, however, don’t know about this.’
So he, too, looked forward to the Daoist Saint’s answer.
"Why are we so rushed and anxious? Because everything that seems so wonderful right now is nothing more than a rootless weed."
In response to Su Zhou’s confused inquiry, Zhang Qingyun sighed softly. He held out his left arm, causing the personal terminal on it to light up. "It’s the Spiritual Energy Revival that brought about the massive increase in productivity. It’s because Extraordinary Techniques work again that our technology has advanced so rapidly. But Spiritual Qi—this very thing was cut off for nearly a thousand years until just recently."
"Look, Su Zhou. You should be able to see it too."
As he spoke, the Daoist Saint showed Su Zhou the image on his terminal screen. Su Zhou looked closely and was stunned to see the cracks in the Great Seal—shattered and stretching across the entire cosmic backdrop!
However, unlike what Su Zhou had seen from Earth, the image the Daoist Saint was displaying seemed to have been captured by some kind of astronomical telescope observing a distant location, then reconstructed... It appeared to be the view from an Extraterrestrial Star System, outside the Solar System.
Other star systems were also situated within the cracks of the Great Seal, and they, too, were undergoing a Spiritual Energy Revival.
Seeing the contemplative look on Su Zhou’s face, Zhang Qingyun said calmly, "These endless cracks that stretch across the entire Cosmos are the Source of both the Spiritual Energy Revival and its cessation. They are also the passages to the Otherworlds that the Immortal Gods of old traveled to... Su Zhou, do you have any idea how glorious the ancient Immortal God Civilization was? Under the governance of the Central Divine Court, the Ten Thousand Realms enjoyed prosperity, and the people lived in peace and contentment. The Dragon King prayed for rain for the farmlands, the Thunder God guarded the populace, and Immortal Gods lived alongside humans, dwelling together upon the Earth."
"Even if it wasn’t a Great Unity World, that era was very much like the one we hope for."
"But the Immortal God Civilization fell apart—because the Spiritual Qi was cut off."
"We cannot follow in the footsteps of our own ancestors. We must uncover the truth behind the fluctuations of Spiritual Qi, and we cannot pin all our hopes on it."
"But that reason... feels a little insufficient?" Su Zhou scratched his head. He could tell that nothing the Daoist Saint said was wrong, but if it was just because they were worried that the Spiritual Qi might be cut off again...
