Isabel was sprawled across the giant cream couch in her living room. The whole house was too big and too quiet, except for the maids walking around, and even they were quiet.
The TV was on. Some drama she wasn’t even watching. The sound just filled the empty space so it didn’t feel so dead.
Her bare feet were tucked under a blanket, a half eaten bowl of popcorn on the coffee table, and the city lights outside the floor to floor ceiling windows looked far away.
Then her phone screen lit up on the table.
[Mira: on my way. be there in 20. bring snacks??]
Isabel snorted and picked it up.
[Isabel: door’s open... and yes. get chocolate.]
She set the phone down and leaned back. The silence came rushing back.
Her wallpaper caught her eye. It was the photo of her and Lynx. From when Lynx had newly awakened and they went on a shopping spree. He was grinning, holding three bags in one hand, and she was mid laugh, leaning into him.
Her gaze lingered on the photo for some time.
"I wonder how Lynx is doing... and Kira, I missed both of them."
She was aware of how her relationship with Lynx had turned from Aunt and Nephew to this... something deeper. Something she couldn’t name without her chest tightening.
Her hands, her toys, nothing felt the same anymore, she couldn’t pleasure herself, she needs him, his touch, his scent, his beauty, his voice. All of him. She couldn’t live without him now. Or ever.
Maybe their relationship was never meant to be normal.
She unlocked her phone and entered her gallery. Started admiring Lynx’s pictures. His transcendental beauty. Even when taken unaware he was still the finest being. The way the light hit his jaw. The way his eyes looked when he wasn’t paying attention.
"I hope he’s okay."
She whispered it to the empty room.
.....
"I believe in her..."
Back to the Lightning Affinity Arena
The air smelled like ozone and sweat.
Eira was on the stage now. The crowd was loud, more students has joined the crowd, but it felt distant to her. Her heart was beating too fast.
Not surprisingly, only Ava had been able to last 9 minutes. The rest of the 8 students that came after her lasted about 15 seconds or less.
Teacher Jace was standing across from her, rolling his shoulders. Lightning flickered faintly around his arms. He was using 30% of his strength now. Ava’s effect. She’d forced him to turn it up.
In the stands, Ava had almost recovered. She was sitting with an ice pack on her shoulder, watching with sharp eyes. Lynx was beside her, leaning back like this was all boring.
"Do you think she’ll do better than me," Ava said, not looking at him. She and Eira had always been rivals in class. Although Eira hardly beat her, there were still times when she did.
"Nobody here is stronger than you, princess," Lynx said, voice lazy. "She’ll do good though. But it won’t guarantee a spot."
"How long do you think she’ll last?"
"4-5 minutes now that Jace’s using 30% of his strength," Lynx answered without hesitation. "But her blessing makes her really fast. It will be helpful."
Ava turned to him, frowning. "How do you know all these? You’ve never been in class, and you’ve never seen her fight. But you sound so confident."
Lynx leaned over and kissed her cheek. Quick and teasing. Making her red.
"Princess, don’t worry about all that. I’m just a genius. You should be happy your celebrity’s a handsome genius."
Ava’s face heated up. She cleared her throat, trying to ignore the way her heart jumped. Then she asked the question that had been bugging her. Well, not only her. Almost all the viewers and students present were asking themselves that question and wondering.
"How will you fare against him?"
Lynx just shrugged, eyes still on the arena. "We’ll see about that. But just know. We are the two chosen students getting picked."
He said it so casually, like it was already decided. And innocent Ava loved that about him.
Lynx checked Eira’s stats with his Primordial Vison.

He hummed. "That’s a decent stats. Fire affinity students are the weakest so far. No wonder Rose’s disappointed at them."
"Begin!" Jace told Eira. The Time started counting.
The moment the word dropped, Eira moved.
She didn’t charge. She didn’t try to overpower him. She knew better. Teacher Jace was faster than her normally, and he was proud. Proud of his speed, proud of his lightning, a very strong and proud teacher.
So she used what she had.
Shinn.
Eira vanished.
Lightning Stride flared and the world turned into streaks. To the audience it looked like she teleported. One second she was in front of Jace, the next she was behind him, a palm strike aimed at his spine.
Jace turned, barely. His arm came up and caught her wrist. Sparks exploded between them.
"Fast," he said, and he sounded pleased. "But not fast enough."
He threw her.
Eira hit the ground and rolled, coming up on her feet instantly. No wasted motion. Her breathing was already steady. 30 seconds in.
For the next minute it was a blur.
Eira darted. Jace struck.
She’d appear to his left, feint, vanish, reappear to his right. She never stayed in one place longer than half a second. Her whole strategy was to not get hit. To wear him down. To make the proud Lightning teacher miss.
The crowd was on its feet.
"Move! Move!" someone screamed.
"Did you see that?"
Jace started smiling. That proud, dangerous smile. "You’re like a fly," he said. "Annoying."
Lightning cracked. He moved.
For the first time, Eira felt real fear. He was faster. Even at 30%, even holding back, his base speed was higher. An SSS rank is an SSS rank, no matter the restrained strength. He caught her ankle mid dash and slammed her into the floor.
The impact knocked the air from her lungs. 2 minutes 10 seconds.
Pain shot up her side. She gritted her teeth and used the momentum to kick off his chest, flipping away. Blood in her mouth. She spat it out.
"You’re good," Jace said, shaking out his hand. "But this is an exam, not a dance."
He came at her.
This time he wasn’t playing. Lightning wrapped around his fist and he moved like a bolt. Eira’s eyes widened. She twisted, and his strike grazed her shoulder instead of her chest. Her skin burned.
3 minutes.
She couldn’t keep running. She had to hit him. Once. Just once to prove she belonged. Ava hit him twice. If Ava could do it, the she could also do it.
Eira took a deep breath. Focused everything into her legs. Lightning Stride to the limit. The air around her vibrated.
She disappeared.
This time she didn’t go for a trick. She went straight. A straight line, faster than she’d ever moved. Her fist, wrapped in thin lightning, aimed for Jace’s ribs.
It connected.
Thud!
The sound echoed.
Jace grunted and slid back half a step. He didn’t bleed. Didn’t even have a bruise. But he’d moved.
The arena went silent for a second, then erupted.
"She hit him! She actually hit him!"
Eira landed, chest heaving. 4 minutes 30 seconds. Her vision was swimming. That took almost all her MP.
Jace looked down at his side, then at her. The proud smile was gone. Replaced with something else. Respect.
"Not bad, kid. Second for a reason, but I don’t think that would guarantee you a spot."
He stepped forward.
Eira tried to move. Her legs wouldn’t. She’d pushed too hard.
Jace’s hand came up, open palm, crackling with restrained lightning. It wasn’t his full power. Just enough.
It hit her square in the chest.
The world went white. Her vision blurred instantly.
She didn’t feel pain. She felt weightless. Then nothing.
Eira hit the ground. Out cold.
5 minutes 90 seconds. That’s when the timer beeped.
Medics rushed in. Ava wanted to help. Although they were rivals, but that’s it. They didn’t hate each other, she felt the pain. The way Eira had landed on the floor, the hit she took. That was no fucking joke. That was brutal. But Lynx Grabbed her arm.
"Let them work, princess," he said softly. For once there was no teasing in his voice.
Ava yanked her arm free, but she stopped. Her eyes were locked on Eira’s still body.
"She lasted longer than anyone except me," Ava whispered. "She... she hit him."
Lynx watched too. His expression was unreadable. Then he smirked, just a little.
"Told you she’d do good."
Ava punched his arm. "Don’t be an ass right now."
He caught her hand and kissed her knuckles. "I’m not. I’m proud of her. And I’m proud of you."
Ava looked away, but she didn’t pull her hand back. Her face was still red.
In the arena, they were lifting Eira onto a stretcher. She looked small.
Jace stood over her for a second. He didn’t say anything. He just nodded once, then called. "Next contestant."
Back in the stands, the murmurs started.
"Five minutes..."
"Against teacher Jace"
"She’s not just hot, she’s good."
Lynx leaned back again, arm draped over Ava’s chair. "See? I told you. We’re the two chosen students getting picked."
Ava rolled her eyes, but there was no heat in it. "You’re an annoying hot Celebrity you know that...."
"Only for you, princess."
She didn’t answer. But her face was crimson. She was still watching Eira been taken away to the infirmary.
...
Isabel’s phone buzzed again.
[Mira: outside. with chocolate. and gossip.]
She smiled despite herself. Stood up, blanket falling to the floor. The house was still too big, still too quiet.
But for the first time today, it didn’t feel quite so empty.
She walked to the door, the picture of Lynx still glowing on her lock screen.
"I hope he’s okay. I hope Kira’s okay."
Outside, she could hear Mira’s car.
