Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Intercept
After seeing Mrs. Spencer and her friends off, Vesper Grayson lowered her eyes thoughtfully.
Eve Garland asked quietly, "Boss, who is that Mrs. Spencer?"
"Director Spencer’s wife."
"No wonder the police came so quickly after she made one phone call."
She had called the police before, but every time they arrived, they just tried to smooth things over, mediating without ever making an arrest. She had been endlessly tormented by scoundrels like Lily Lloyd.
When her brother had harassed her, she’d only gotten justice because she had started recording in advance and caught him on video trying to assault her.
"Don’t worry. That brother and sister won’t get out so easily this time."
She had just deliberately said those things to escalate the conflict and get Mrs. Spencer to make the call herself.
As long as Mrs. Spencer spoke up, the police would undoubtedly handle the matter seriously.
Today was the perfect opportunity to make an example of them. Otherwise, people would really think The Splendor Hall was an easy target.
She remembered encountering similar troublemakers when she first opened the qipao shop. That’s when she truly understood that money alone was useless. Without powerful backing, even when she was clearly in the right, she faced obstacles at every turn. Matters would drag on, draining and agonizing her, until she was usually forced to just drop them.
Later, she went to great lengths to invite these wealthy, influential women into her shop. She meticulously crafted custom qipaos for them, but it was never for the small profit. She knew better than anyone that for the shop to gain a stable foothold and survive long-term, her own efforts were far from enough.
These powerful women were her most reliable patrons. As long as they were willing to visit and offer their protection, she wouldn’t have to lift a finger if anyone dared to cause trouble or sling mud in the future. Someone else would naturally stand up for her.
She wasn’t after a single sale. She was borrowing their influence to ensure her shop’s security.
Vesper Grayson turned her gaze to Eve Garland. "We’re not taking any more orders this year. Once this batch is done, I’ll give you some time off."
"Thank you, Boss!"
Four years ago, with nowhere to turn, Eve Garland had thrown herself into a lake to end her life. Vesper Grayson, who was passing by, pulled her back from the brink of death.
She let her stay at the qipao shop, providing food and lodging, and gradually taught her how to interact with people and manage the business. Eve Garland was a diligent worker and a fast learner.
During the three years she was away in Ashmore, she had left the shop entirely in Eve Garland’s care, and it had been managed very well.
As for her family, her past, and her reasons for the suicide attempt—Eve Garland never brought it up, and Vesper never asked.
...
Gwen Grayson entered Vesper Grayson’s office with the key she’d had made.
The office was bright and spotless with an expansive view, several times larger than her own. A flash of jealousy crossed her eyes.
’This office should have been mine.’
’The moment Vesper Grayson came back, she got ridiculously lucky, secured the Vaudin distribution rights, and was immediately made Vice President. Meanwhile, I’ve worked hard for three years and I’m still just a junior manager. I just can’t stomach it!’
’I have to get this batch of ore, no matter what.’
’Did Vesper really think I couldn’t do anything just because she wouldn’t approve it?’
She found Vesper Grayson’s official seal, forged her signature on the approval line, and a smug look flashed across her face.
Holding the approval form, now bearing a signature and the official seal, she marched straight to the finance department. "This is for an ore payment specially approved by the Vice President," she said calmly. "It’s urgent. Please arrange the transfer immediately."
Seeing that the paperwork was complete with both a signature and an official seal, the finance officer didn’t dare delay. They immediately processed the payment and transferred the money.
But just after the funds were sent, the officer felt that something wasn’t right. They decided to call Vesper Grayson to confirm.
"Vice President Grayson, Manager Grayson just came by with your approval form and transferred a payment for some ore..."
Vesper Grayson’s expression changed in an instant, her voice turning icy. "I haven’t approved any payments! Contact the bank and stop the transfer immediately!"
’Damn that Gwen Grayson!’
’Is she an idiot?’
’I made it perfectly clear, but she didn’t listen to a single word.’
She called Aaron Sawyer and explained the emergency.
Aaron Sawyer understood the gravity of the situation. With a quick acknowledgment, he turned and went to the president’s office to report the situation to Milton Grayson.
"Damn fool!" Milton Grayson’s face contorted, his chest aching with anger. He told Aaron Sawyer to find Gwen Grayson and pulled out his phone to call her.
The call went through.
"Dad? I’m busy. Whatever it is, we can talk about it when I get back to the company!"
At that moment, Gwen Grayson had already arrived at Warren Childs’s suburban villa.
"Gwen Grayson, you’ve really gotten bold! Stealing keys, breaking into an office, forging a signature, using the official seal without authorization... Do you have any idea that you’re breaking the law?!"
"Is this how I raised you? How could the Grayson family produce someone as stupid and reckless as you!"
Gwen Grayson turned pale from the scolding, biting her lip as she retorted.
"Dad, what right do you have to yell at me? You’re just biased! You’ve always favored Vesper Grayson! You support everything she does, but no matter how much I accomplish, you never praise me!"
"It must be Vesper Grayson bad-mouthing me to you again, right? She’s just afraid I’ll succeed, do better than her, and take her position in the company!"
"Warren Childs is a famous ore merchant. He would never cheat me!"
"Everyone in the industry knows he’s vicious and ruthless, just waiting to swindle idiots like you! Do you have any idea how much the company will lose if we can’t get that money back?"
With red-rimmed eyes, Gwen Grayson shouted back hysterically, "I don’t care! I am going to get that batch of raw stones! I am going to achieve something and make you all see! You’ve all always looked down on me, thinking I’m not as good as Vesper Grayson at anything! I just wanted to prove myself, is that so wrong?"
In a fit of rage, she slammed the end call button and shut her phone off completely.
"Miss Grayson, please rest assured," Warren Childs said, slowly pouring her more hot tea. His smile was gentle, but his eyes hid a bottomless calculation. "Although the paperwork for this batch of raw stones isn’t complete, the goods themselves are genuinely high-quality. A friend of mine was in a hurry to free up some capital, which is why he transferred them to me at a low price. Otherwise, for two hundred million, I would never have let them go to you."
"Of course I trust you, Childs. The finance department has already made the transfer. If you’ll just wait a moment, the payment should arrive soon." Gwen Grayson paused, unable to suppress the eagerness in her voice. "Could I... see the goods first?"
"Of course."
Warren Childs raised a hand to signal, and one of his men immediately came forward, holding a raw stone that was resting on a soft cloth cushion.
A "window" had already been cut into the stone, revealing a smooth incision. A patch of deep green was exposed, boasting excellent translucency and a vibrant, eye-catching color. The quality was astonishing.
Gwen Grayson had only a superficial knowledge of gems, but the moment she saw that brilliant green, her breath caught, her heart leaped, and her eyes filled with unconcealable excitement.
"Miss Grayson, don’t just look at this one windowed piece. This entire shipment comes from the same mine, the same batch of raw stones. If this one can produce such color and translucency, the quality of the others will be even more consistent, certainly no worse. Raw stones of this quality are snatched up like crazy on the market."
She couldn’t suppress the smile forming on her lips. Her fingertips gently brushed over the green of the window, and her voice became a little more cheerful.
"It really is a quality find."
As long as she brought this batch of raw stones back to the company, everyone would see her in a whole new light and would never dare to look down on her again.
