Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Quick, Stop Her

The minutes ticked by, but the notification for the fund transfer never arrived.

Gwen Grayson clutched her phone, her heart burning with anxiety.

The gentle expression on Warren Childs’s face gradually faded. He lifted his wrist to check his watch, his tone growing heavy. "Miss Grayson, this money is taking far too long to arrive. It puts me in a difficult position. You’re not the only one with an eye on this batch of raw stones. Another buyer was just pressing me about them. I can wait twenty more minutes at most. If the money hasn’t arrived by then, I’ll have to sell to someone else."

"Mr. Childs, please wait a little longer!" Gwen Grayson said anxiously. "There must be a delay with the bank on the finance department’s end. It will really be here any second!"

"I’ve been in this business for many years. I know how long a transfer delay should be," Warren Childs said flatly, his tone cold and unforgiving. "Miss Grayson, you’d better hurry up and call to push them."

"If you’re not sincere, then stop taking up space and wasting everyone’s time."

The words hit Gwen Grayson’s heart like a heavy stone.

She glanced at the raw stone on the table, its exposed window revealing a stunning green, and immediately called the finance department to demand an answer.

"What the hell is going on?! Did the transfer go through or not?"

Before leaving the company, she had watched the accountant make the transfer. She only left after confirming it had been sent.

It should have arrived long ago in the time it took her to get to Warren Childs’s villa!

The accountant stammered on the other end of the line, failing to give her a straight answer.

Gwen Grayson gritted her teeth and issued a few warnings before hanging up. She turned her gaze to Warren Childs, forcing a smile. "President Childs, please don’t worry. The money will definitely arrive!"

’This is my only chance to turn things around.’

Another half an hour passed, but there was still no news of the transfer.

Warren Childs lost his patience. "It seems Miss Grayson has no say in her own company. Even a lowly accountant doesn’t take you seriously!"

Gwen Grayson’s expression changed. She tried calling the finance department again, but the call wouldn’t go through. Recalling the accountant’s stammering earlier, she was certain something was being hidden from her.

"President Childs, let me make one more call!"

She stood up, walked to the window with her phone, and called Joyce Rivers to explain the situation.

"Mom, this is my only chance to turn things around. You’ll support me, right?"

Joyce Rivers snorted coldly. "That Milton Grayson! To think he’d suppress you like this for Vesper Grayson’s sake! Gwen, don’t you worry, Mom will definitely be on your side! However, I don’t have that much cash on hand right now. Can you ask Mr. Childs to hold onto that batch of goods and give me some time to gather the funds?"

"How long?"

"One hour."

"Okay, I’ll tell President Childs."

She repeated what Joyce Rivers had said to Warren Childs, her words sincere.

"President Childs, my mom will transfer the money in an hour. Please, considering our sincerity, give us a little more time!"

Warren Childs narrowed his eyes and studied her for a moment as if considering it. Then he nodded. "Fine. Out of respect for Mrs. Grayson, I’ll give you one last chance. If the money hasn’t arrived in one hour, I’m selling this batch to someone else!"

Meanwhile, Aaron Sawyer had finally tracked down Gwen Grayson’s whereabouts and immediately notified Vesper Grayson and Milton Grayson.

At the same time, Vesper Grayson received a call from the finance department confirming they had successfully intercepted the transfer. Her worried heart finally settled, and she drove toward Warren Childs’s villa on the outskirts of the city.

Milton Grayson and Aaron Sawyer also set out from the company.

Forty minutes later, the car arrived at its destination.

Vesper Grayson got out of her car just as Aaron Sawyer and Milton Grayson’s car pulled up.

"Vesper, how are things?"

Seeing her, Milton Grayson walked over and asked urgently.

"Dad, the bank has already successfully intercepted the transfer. But I heard that Miss Joyce is in the process of mortgaging several properties under her name..."

’Gwen Grayson must have realized there was a problem with the finance department, so she’s found another way.’

Milton Grayson’s face burned with uncontrollable anger. "Like mother, like daughter. A pair of idiots!"

Gwen Grayson saw the text message notification confirming the deposit into her bank account, and the corners of her lips curled up. "President Childs, the money has been transferred. We can complete the transaction now, right?"

"Miss Grayson certainly has some pull after all." Warren Childs gave a signal with his eyes, and a subordinate immediately placed a laptop in front of Gwen Grayson.

Gwen Grayson immediately logged into her account and began the process.

Just as her finger was about to tap to confirm the transfer, Milton Grayson’s voice, thick with fury, suddenly boomed from the doorway.

"Gwen Grayson, if you dare make that transfer, I will disown you as my daughter!"

Hearing the voice, Gwen Grayson’s body froze. She slowly turned her head, and when she saw who had arrived, her pupils contracted violently.

"Dad, what are you doing here...?"

"If I hadn’t come, you would have paid the price for your foolishness!"

Aaron Sawyer stepped forward and pleaded urgently, "Miss Grayson, please don’t be fooled! The paperwork for this batch is incomplete, its origins are unknown, and it doesn’t meet regulations. If you buy it, your funds won’t be secure, and you could even get hit with a lawsuit in a worst-case scenario."

Gwen Grayson was about to say something, but the moment she saw Vesper Grayson behind him, her expression instantly turned cold.

"Vesper Grayson, so you’re the one behind this! I knew you couldn’t stand to see me succeed."

"I don’t care what any of you say. It’s useless. I’m buying this batch, and that’s final!"

With that, she went for broke, her finger moving toward the confirm transfer button.

"Stop her!" Milton Grayson’s face changed drastically as he bellowed.

Aaron Sawyer was closest to her. With quick eyes and faster hands, he knocked the laptop from her grasp.

"Aaron Sawyer, what are you doing?!" Gwen Grayson reached out to pick it up, but Aaron Sawyer naturally gave her no chance. He snatched the laptop first, hugging it tightly to his chest and refusing to let go.

Warren Childs, who had been quiet throughout the commotion, spoke with a grim face.

"President Grayson, what is all this commotion? Do you think I, Warren Childs, am a pushover?"

Milton Grayson met his gaze coldly. "Warren Childs, you have the audacity to try and scam someone from my Grayson Family. If the source of this batch of goods were legal and compliant, you wouldn’t need to swindle my foolish daughter!"

’With the quality visible from the window cut, this piece alone is auction-grade. There’s no way he’d let Gwen Grayson get it for a bargain.’

"Where is this coming from? This batch of goods is genuine and laid out right here. I was only willing to part with it because I saw how sincere Miss Grayson was." Warren Childs sneered, then glanced at Gwen Grayson, casually fanning the flames. "Miss Grayson, it seems that in President Grayson’s heart, you’re nothing but a hopeless case."

Gwen Grayson bit her lip, her eyes turning red with grievance and anger. "Dad, am I really that stupid in your eyes? Is it so hard to get your approval? Is it that no matter what I do, I’ll never be better than Vesper Grayson in your heart?"

’We’re both his daughters, so why has his favoritism always been so obvious, ever since we were children?’

’Is it just because Vesper Grayson is the child of the woman he loved?’

Milton Grayson looked at her with bitter disappointment. ’Even at a time like this, she’s still fighting for favor and can’t see Warren Childs’s true intentions.’

’That treacherous old fox is clearly just adding fuel to the fire, trying to sow discord between us!’

"Yes. You’re not just stupid, you’re completely hopeless," Milton Grayson said, his anger overwhelming him.

Gwen Grayson let out a short, scoffing laugh, her eyes filled with sorrow as she murmured, "I knew it. You finally admitted it..."

’He finally said what he truly thinks today.’

At this thought, a look of desperate, do-or-die determination flashed in her eyes.

"Mr. Childs, this business deal is between you and me. Please do me the favor of kicking these irrelevant people out!"
