Zu Li raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
"What if..." West leaned closer. "...I beat you in a spar?"
Zu Li blinked twice before laughing hysterically.
It was so unexpected that even nearby guests turned to look.
She coughed twice before folding her arms. "Winning against a lowlife gang leader has made you cocky."
West shrugged proudly. "Well..."
"...I did win."
She smirked. "That’s because I trained you well."
West immediately pointed at her. "So now you’re taking credit?"
"Naturally."
"I should start charging tuition."
"I’ll send you the invoice."
West laughed. "I suddenly don’t feel grateful anymore."
The playful banter continued for another minute before Zu Li’s smile slowly faded.
Her expression became noticeably more serious.
"Jokes aside..." she looked directly into his eyes. "...How?"
West tilted his head. "What do you mean?"
"You know exactly what I mean."
"He was Tier Two."
"You haven’t even been awakened for a year."
"I know your progress."
"I know your capabilities."
"So..."
"...how did you beat him?"
The question lingered as West remained silent for several seconds.
He slowly raised one finger before placing it gently against his lips.
"Shhh..."
A mischievous smile appeared on his face. "You have your secrets..."
"...I have mine."
For just a brief moment... Zu Li simply stared at him. Something about that confident smile and the mystery surrounding him, made him strangely more attractive.
She immediately pushed that thought aside.
Instead, she lightly knocked him on the forehead. "Annoying brat."
West rubbed his forehead dramatically. "Ow."
"I barely touched you."
"I’ll never recover."
"You deserve worse."
Both laughed but soon a brief silence ensued before Zu Li spoke again.
"The attention Shadow Reapers is receiving now..."
"...is both a blessing and a curse."
West nodded. "I know."
"Many people will smile at you."
"Many will secretly wish for your downfall."
"Some will test you."
"Others will try using you."
She looked around the hall. "So be careful."
West smiled. "I’m enjoying the positives right now."
He leaned slightly closer before adding playfully, "But if the negatives show up..."
"...you’ve got my back, right?"
He finished the sentence with a playful wink.
Zu Li froze for half a second as a faint blush appeared on her face.
She immediately forced her usual composed expression back into place.
Bonk~
She knocked him on the head again. "Stop flirting."
"I wasn’t."
"You absolutely were."
"I was negotiating."
She rolled her eyes. "You negotiate terribly."
West laughed. "So that’s a yes."
"I never said yes."
"You didn’t say no."
"You really are impossible."
...
Seated quietly nearby, Liz watched everything unfold.
She hadn’t interrupted once and truthfully, she barely could.
Her thoughts were in complete disarray.
Zu Li... the woman who had been with West throughout the party, wasn’t merely beautiful... she was practically legendary.
The Awakening Queen of Misty High.
Someone whose name was recognized even by kids.
And yet, she joked with West, teased him and scolded him.
They behaved less like distant acquaintances... and more like close friends.
Liz couldn’t hide her astonishment.
’Just... Who exactly has he become in these last couple of months...?’
She suddenly realized that West now was nothing like the scrawny kid from back in the neighbourhood who she even dismissed when he tried to save her fiancée. He had grown into an unrecognisable figure.
...
Later that evening, another influential guest approached West.
He was introduced by one of the visiting gang leaders. "West."
"This is Mr. Holden."
"One of the city’s biggest names in commercial real estate."
The man smiled confidently. "I’ve heard wonderful things."
West shook his hand politely. "The pleasure is mine."
Mr. Holden wasted little time. "I believe Shadow Reapers should begin investing immediately."
He unfolded several holographic property projections. "This district."
"Excellent appreciation."
"This warehouse."
"Future logistics hub."
"This commercial plaza."
"Guaranteed returns."
West listened quietly while several guests nearby leaned closer.
Liz also happened to overhear the discussion.
At first, she remained silent.
Then Mr. Holden began describing another property.
Liz frowned. "...That’s overpriced."
The conversation paused as Mr. Holden looked toward her. "I’m sorry?"
Liz stepped closer. "The projected appreciation is based on an outdated zoning proposal."
"That district lost its transport expansion bid three months ago."
"The value won’t rise nearly as much."
She pointed toward another projection. "This one has structural issues."
"The renovation costs alone make it a poor investment."
She continued. "This warehouse appears attractive..."
"...but the surrounding businesses are already declining."
"Maintenance expenses will exceed projected profits."
One by one, she dismantled nearly every proposal.
Mr. Holden’s confident smile slowly disappeared. "Miss..."
"...with all due respect..."
"I’ve worked in this industry for decades."
Liz nodded politely. "I’m aware."
"But several of these figures are outdated."
"And two of these projections assume conditions that no longer exist."
His expression stiffened. "I don’t think—"
West calmly interrupted. "Let her finish."
Mr. Holden looked toward him, feeling insulted but West simply smiled. "I trust her."
The room became quiet again as Liz continued explaining market trends, future development plans and realistic pricing.
By the end... even several nearby business owners nodded thoughtfully.
Mr. Holden quietly packed away several projections. "...I’ll have my analysts review those."
West smiled warmly toward Liz. "Thank you."
She blinked. "I didn’t really do anything."
"You saved me from making expensive mistakes," he chuckled.
"A lot of people will try taking advantage of me because of Shadow Reapers’ recent success."
"It’s good..."
"...having a friend who actually knows what she’s talking about."
Liz smiled. "I’m glad I could help."
She paused before adding, "To be fair..."
"Mr. Holden wasn’t entirely wrong."
"Investing in property is a good idea."
"I just think..."
"...I can find you much better opportunities."
West looked genuinely interested. "Oh?"
She nodded confidently. "I know this market."
"I can probably save you millions."
West smiled. "Then..."
He gestured toward a quieter hallway leading deeper into headquarters.
"Why don’t we continue this conversation in my office?"
"I’d love to hear your ideas."
Liz nodded enthusiastically. "I’d be happy to."
