West raised an eyebrow. "That somehow sounds even less convincing."
"Why would I be interested in anything you have to offer?"
Her smile widened. "Because..."
"...you stand to gain quite a lot from it."
West remained silent.
Seeing he wasn’t interrupting, she continued. "A once-in-a-century opportunity is approaching."
"It hasn’t been made public yet..." she paused deliberately before adding. "In three months..."
"...the Rift to Castle Extingo will open."
West frowned. "...Castle what?"
"Castle Extingo."
She folded her arms. "It’s similar to a ruin."
"...but only on the surface."
"Its scale is incomparable."
"Its treasures are beyond counting."
"And unlike ordinary ruins..."
"...it has never been cleared."
West’s interest visibly increased and she noticed.
"It appears only once every hundred years."
"But there’s another restriction."
"Only awakeners who have been awakened for one year or less may enter."
"The rift itself rejects everyone else."
West instinctively calculated. He had only been awakened for seven months which meant... he qualified.
She smiled after noticing the realization in his eyes. "I see you’ve already done the math."
West nodded slightly. "So..."
"What’s inside that’s so special?"
Her expression finally became serious. "There is one treasure."
"Just one."
"The treasure."
"The one every faction dreams about."
She slowly walked toward one of the windows overlooking the city. "Whenever an organization manages to obtain one..."
"...their future changes."
"Their influence explodes."
"Their prosperity becomes almost guaranteed."
West listened quietly. "For the past four hundred years..."
"No one has successfully brought one out."
"Every appearance of Castle Extingo ends the same way."
"Blood."
"Betrayal."
"Massacres."
"And before anyone succeeds..."
"...the castle disappears once again."
She turned back toward him. "My objective..."
"...is that treasure."
West studied her expression and could tell that she meant every word. "I’m assembling a team."
"The strongest first-year awakeners I can find."
"I want you among them."
"You may keep every other treasure you find."
"I won’t contest those."
"But..."
"That one treasure belongs to me."
"If I bring it back..."
"...my position within the family becomes unshakable."
"I could even contend for leadership."
Silence settled between them for a while as West lowered his head slightly, thinking.
This wasn’t simply another ruin expedition.
It would be a gathering of virtually every talented first-year awakener across the region.
Every ambitious rookie, rising genius, hidden monster... would be there.
It was... essentially a grand competition. And since it had countless valuable treasures, there was no doubt that the danger within would be great as well.
After several moments... West laughed.
Freya blinked in confusion. "What?"
West looked directly at her. "Why..."
"...would I join your team?"
He smiled confidently. "When I can simply build my own..."
"...and claim that treasure myself?"
She wasn’t surprised by his remark. In fact, she smiled even wider.
"I thought you’d say that."
She slowly walked closer again. "I may have forgotten to include one small detail."
"The Rift to Castle Extingo..."
"...opens only within mafia territory."
West’s expression changed slightly upon hearing that. "Meaning..."
She nodded. "Every gang."
"Every faction."
"Every independent awakener."
"Anyone wishing to enter..."
"...must first register through us."
She smiled sweetly. "And registration approval..."
"...falls under my authority."
She stepped close enough for only him to hear. "With a single command from me..."
"...you’re never getting inside Castle Extingo."
West remained silent for several seconds after Freya’s declaration.
The atmosphere inside the dimly lit lounge grew heavy.
He suddenly displayed a devious smile. "What if I just kill you right now?"
The words were spoken so casually that they almost sounded like he was discussing the weather.
Freya merely smirked while West continued. "I’m sure that authority would simply fall to Timothy."
He folded his arms. "And from what I remember..."
"I’m in considerably better graces with him than I am with you."
A laugh of genuine amusement escaped Freya’s lips. "I’ve missed that confidence."
She slowly circled around him with her heels clicking softly against the floor. "But would you really risk it?"
West’s eyes followed her until she stopped directly in front of him. "You’ve worked incredibly hard building your little kingdom."
"Shadow Reapers has finally begun making a name for itself."
"You’ve survived wars."
"You’ve defeated stronger enemies."
"You’ve gathered loyal followers."
She smiled. "...Would you really throw all of that away over me?"
She took another step. "Harming me..."
"...would mean declaring war against the Mafia."
Her voice became noticeably colder. "You may have defeated a gang like Iron Vultures."
"They were troublesome."
"They were established."
"But in the grand scheme of things..."
"...they were nobodies."
Her crimson eyes locked onto his. "The Mafia isn’t."
"If I disappear after walking into this headquarters..."
"There won’t be investigations."
"There won’t be negotiations."
"There won’t even be questions."
"There will simply be retaliation."
West remained expressionless while Freya chuckled. "You’re a smart man."
"You understand exactly what I’m saying."
"The moment I die..."
"...Shadow Reapers dies with me."
Silence followed because West knew she wasn’t exaggerating.
Iron Vultures had possessed hundreds of awakeners but the Mafia possessed far more to the extent where it was incomparable.
They had resources, influence, political connections, money, hidden elites, veterans...
Their reach extended throughout multiple cities.
It was precisely because of organizations like them that West had deliberately try to keep away from the eyes of upper circles.
His original plan had been to simply grow quietly and become powerful... only then could he attract attention.
Instead... attention had arrived much earlier than expected.
He let out a quiet breath. "...This is exactly what I wanted to avoid."
Freya’s smile softened. "For what it’s worth..."
"I’m not your enemy."
"Not today."
She slowly stepped closer, leaning toward his ear.
Her warm breath brushed lightly against his skin. "I’ll be in touch..."
As she spoke, her fingers briefly brushed the back of his head in a familiar, almost affectionate gesture before she withdrew.
Then, she simply walked past him.
West frowned and a second later, he turned.
"..."
The corridor behind him was completely empty.
Freya had vanished as though she’d never existed.
West sighed while rubbing his temples. "This woman... is trouble."
