Liz gently set a tray down on the adjustable table beside the bed before carefully helping her fiancé sit a little more upright.
Seven months had passed since the incident that left him bedridden, yet every movement still required patience. She had become so accustomed to the routine that she barely thought about it anymore.
"There..." she smiled softly as she adjusted the pillow behind his back. "Comfortable?"
He shifted slightly before giving a small nod. "Much better."
She smiled. "I made your favourite."
He looked down at the neatly arranged plate.
The vegetables had been cut into smaller portions to make eating easier, the soup was still steaming gently, and the chicken had been carefully deboned. "You always spoil me."
"I have to," she picked up a spoon and stirred the soup slightly.
"It’ll be too hot otherwise."
After making sure it had cooled enough, she handed him the spoon.
He took it before looking up at her with warm eyes. "...Thank you."
Before taking his first bite, he reached out and gently held her hand before kissing the back of it.
The simple gesture caught her off guard causing her to display a surprised smile. "What was that for?"
"For staying," he voiced with a low tone. "For not giving up on me."
Liz’s expression softened immediately.
She reached over and affectionately rubbed his hair. "You silly man."
"Eat before it gets cold."
He finally obeyed, smiling to himself as he began eating.
Just then...
Bzzzz...
Her phone vibrated on the nearby table.
She glanced toward it and her expression immediately darkened upon spotting the contact name displayed on the screen: Geo Tech Chief.
She looked away, ignoring the phone until it stopped ringing...
Only for it to begin again almost immediately.
Bzzzz...
Bzzzz...
Bzzzz...
Her fiancé looked up from his meal. "Aren’t you going to answer that?"
"It’s nothing," she picked up the phone and decline without hesitation...
.
A few seconds passed before it rang again.
She closed her eyes for a brief moment. "...Persistent idiot."
With an exhausted sigh, she answered before walking a few steps away from the bed.
"What?"
"What do you want?"
A cheerful male voice came from the other end. "Oh come on, beautiful Liz."
"Don’t sound so angry."
"We never got to finish discussing our deal."
Her tone sharpened. "We’re never going to."
"I will never give you what you want."
The man laughed. "Don’t be so stubborn."
"I can give you everything."
"Make sure you get a promotion..."
"Money..."
"A better life."
"You’ve been struggling ever since your fiancé became bedridden."
"I can make all your problems disappear."
Liz’s eyes turned cold. "My problems?"
"My biggest problem right now is that you keep calling."
"You really should reconsider."
"I’m offering you—"
She cut him off. "You’re disgusting."
There was a brief silence before she added, "Find someone else to harass."
She ended the call before he could reply.
Afterwards, she leaned against the wall and let out a long breath.
For a brief moment, frustration overwhelmed her but she forced a smile back onto her face before returning.
Her fiancé looked at her quietly. "...Who was that?"
She sat beside him. "Just some old, unimportant fool."
He chuckled. "Hey..."
"Take it easy."
She blinked. "Hm?"
He reached out, taking both her hands into his. "You..."
"...are a beautiful woman."
She rolled her eyes. "Oh no."
"Not this again."
He smiled. "Listen."
"You have a bedridden fiancé."
"You work."
"You take care of the house."
"You take care of me."
"It’s only natural that other men would make advances."
"So..." he squeezed her hands gently. "Don’t let it get to you."
Liz slowly nodded. "I know."
He looked down for a moment before speaking again. "You’ve done so much for me."
"For seven whole months..."
"I’ve been lying here."
"You’ve cleaned me."
"Fed me."
"Worked."
"Handled the bills."
"Taken care of everything."
He smiled bitterly. "I honestly don’t know how to thank you."
She immediately shook her head. "No."
"You don’t have to thank me."
"You would’ve done exactly the same for me."
He laughed softly. "I would’ve tried."
Silence lingered briefly before he eventually looked away. "I’m sorry."
Liz frowned. "For what?"
"For not recovering."
She immediately reached for his face. "Don’t say that."
"I can imagine how difficult it’s been," he sighed. "Especially..."
He hesitated. "...because I can’t even be a proper fiancé anymore."
She already knew where this conversation was heading. "Don’t."
"I’m serious."
"You haven’t had any intimacy for seven months."
"I can’t..." he glanced downward. "...I can’t even function down there."
She squeezed his hand. "Enough."
But he continued. "I wouldn’t even be angry..."
"...if you did it with someone else."
Her eyes widened. "What?"
"You’re human."
"You have needs too."
"It must be frustrating."
"I wouldn’t blame you."
She immediately shook her head. "No."
"What are you talking about?"
"Stop saying things like that."
"I mean it."
"No."
"I love you."
"I’m not going anywhere."
He smiled sadly. "I know you do."
"But..."
As he continued speaking... something unexpected happened.
For the briefest of moments... her thoughts betrayed her.
The face of West flashed through her mind... his smile... confidence... and the way he had always treated her with respect.
The image appeared for barely a second but Liz immediately stiffened. "No..."
She inwardly scolded herself. ’What am I thinking?’
Guilt enveloped her almost instantly.
She loved the man sitting before her. He had stood beside her through years of hardship.
She pushed the intrusive thought away as quickly as it had come.
Her fiancé noticed none of it.
Instead, he simply smiled weakly. "I’m lucky."
She leaned forward, resting her forehead gently against his. "No."
"I’m the lucky one."
The room became quiet once more.

Within the Shadow Reapers Headquarters, West stood before a holographic projector inside the strategy room completely unaware of the internal turmoil Liz had just underwent.
Jax lounged lazily in one chair while Nina leaned against the wall with folded arms.
Aria stood beside the projection, flipping through several digital files.
The image floating before them displayed the title... Castle Extingo.
