The next morning, Drako woke before sunrise. For several seconds, he stared at the ceiling, trying to remember whether the events of the previous days had actually happened.
Then he looked at his hands. A faint golden glow appeared around his fingers. Crimson energy followed.
He quickly closed his fist, and both disappeared. “So it really is real.” A translucent blue screen appeared in front of him. [Good morning, Host.] Drako sighed.
“You really don’t sleep, do you?” [The System does not require sleep.]
“Lucky you.”
He sat up and looked at his academy uniform. Today was the day of the first student hunting exercise.
Astra Academy regularly sent students into controlled areas outside the academy so they could gain real combat experience.
The instructors had explained that the first hunting zone only contained low-level beasts. Students would not be allowed to enter areas beyond their assigned level.
Drako was relieved. He still didn’t fully understand his powers, and the last thing he wanted was to face another creature like the one that had nearly killed him before reaching the academy.
He dressed quickly and headed outside. The training grounds were already crowded.
Students gathered in groups while instructors checked their equipment. Adrian waved when he saw him.
“Drako! Over here!”
Drako walked toward him and saw Mira and Raizen standing nearby.
Mira carried two short blades attached to her belt. Raizen had his sword across his back. Adrian had a small device attached to his wrist. “Ready?” Adrian asked.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Drako answered. Mira smiled. “That’s not very confident.”
“I’m confident. I’m just not stupid.” Raizen looked toward the instructors.
“They’re about to explain the rules.” A senior instructor stepped forward.
The students became quiet. “Listen carefully. This is your first field exercise. The area has been inspected, but beasts are still unpredictable.
Your objective is simple. Work together, defeat low-level beasts, and return when instructed. Do not leave your assigned group.”
The instructor looked across the students. “Most importantly, do not chase a beast into an unknown area.
If you encounter something stronger than expected, retreat immediately and contact an instructor.” Drako listened carefully.
He knew exactly why that rule existed. He had ignored danger once before and almost died because of it.
The gates opened, and the students began moving toward the forest. The group entered through a large metal barrier that separated the academy grounds from the hunting zone.
Drako immediately activated Blood Sense. The world changed. He could feel small creatures moving beneath the trees. He could sense birds flying overhead.
He could even feel the faint energy inside plants and insects. He had only recently discovered Blood Sense, and he still found it strange.
“Something wrong?”
Mira asked. Drako looked at her. “No. I’m just getting used to something.” “Something?” She raised an eyebrow.
Drako smiled. “My senses.” Mira nodded.
“They’re definitely better than they were when we started.” Drako didn’t answer. He couldn’t tell her the real reason.
The group continued deeper into the forest. After nearly twenty minutes, they heard a growl.
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
Everyone stopped. A small beast emerged from behind a tree. It looked like a large wolf, but its body was covered in dark fur and its claws glowed faintly with energy. Adrian checked his device.
“Low-level Shadow Fang. Level 2.”
One of the students in another group stepped forward. “I’ll take it.” The instructor allowed him to fight.
The student charged, but the beast was faster than expected. It dodged his attack and knocked him backward.
Another student joined the battle. Together, they managed to defeat it.
Drako watched carefully.
The System appeared. [Beast defeated.] [No personal contribution detected.] [Experience unavailable.] Drako frowned.
So that was how it worked. If someone else defeated the beast, he received nothing. He needed his own victories. A second beast appeared shortly afterward. This time, Drako stepped forward. “I’ll fight.”
Mira looked at him. “Are you sure?” “Yeah.” The Shadow Fang growled and lowered its body. Drako activated Blood Sense.
The creature’s heartbeat became clear. He could feel the tension in its muscles. He knew it was going to jump before it moved. The beast launched itself at him.
Drako stepped aside. Its claws passed inches from his chest. He turned and punched. His fist struck the creature’s side. The beast rolled across the ground.
Drako was surprised by the force of his own attack. “Dragon Strength…” Golden energy briefly surrounded his fist. The beast stood again and charged.
This time, Drako waited until the last second. He activated Blood Sense and moved beneath the attack. He struck the creature’s stomach.
The beast fell. [Beast defeated.] [Experience acquired.] [Experience increased.] [Progress toward Level 2: 18%.] Drako smiled.
“So that’s how I level up.” Adrian walked over. “You defeated it pretty easily.”
“I got lucky.” Raizen looked at him.
“That wasn’t luck.” Drako glanced at him. Raizen continued walking without saying anything else.
They continued through the forest. More beasts appeared during the afternoon.
Drako fought several of them, but he didn’t use his full strength. He wanted to understand how much power he could use without attracting attention.
His Dragon Scales were especially useful. They appeared whenever he concentrated, but they disappeared if he lost focus.
Blood Enhancement was different. It made everything inside him feel faster. His heartbeat increased.
His vision became sharper. His muscles responded faster. But using it for too long made him exhausted.
The System explained that his Vampire Bloodline was still extremely weak, so he couldn’t maintain the ability for long periods. Drako accepted that.
He needed training. Near sunset, the students reached a clearing. The instructors ordered everyone to rest before returning to the academy.
Drako sat beside a tree and closed his eyes. He activated Blood Sense again. Dozens of heartbeats surrounded him.
He separated them one by one. Birds. Small beasts. Students. Instructors. Then he noticed something strange.
One heartbeat was moving toward them. Drako opened his eyes. “Everyone, wait.” Mira looked at him.
“What?”
“Something is coming.”
The instructor immediately stood. “Where?” Drako pointed toward the trees. A low growl echoed through the forest.
A creature stepped into the clearing. It was larger than the beasts they had fought earlier, but it wasn’t enormous.
Its body was covered in thick gray fur, and two curved horns came from its forehead. Adrian checked his device.
“Iron Horn Beast. Level 4.” The instructor remained calm. “Everyone stay back.” A group of stronger students volunteered to fight.
Drako watched from the side. The beast was stronger than the previous creatures, but still within the safe range.
Three students attacked together. The creature slammed one of them into the ground. Another student dodged its horns and struck its side. Drako noticed its movements. Its left leg was slightly slower than the others.
He shouted, “Its left leg! It’s injured!” The students adjusted their attacks. The beast became surrounded.
Eventually, one student delivered the finishing blow. [Beast defeated.] Drako watched the body disappear into energy.
The instructor nodded. “Good work. Now we return.” The students began moving back toward the academy.
Drako walked beside his friends, but something continued bothering him. His Blood Sense had detected something earlier.
The Iron Horn Beast had not been alone. Before leaving the clearing, Drako had sensed another heartbeat deeper in the forest. It was slower than a normal beast. Much slower.
And much stronger. He looked back. The trees stood silently in the fading light. “Drako?” Mira called.
He turned. “Coming.” He followed the group. As they continued toward the academy, the strange heartbeat disappeared from his senses.
Drako didn’t know what it was, and he wasn’t going to investigate. The instructor had given them a direct order not to wander. For once, Drako decided to listen.
They reached the academy before nightfall. Students returned their equipment and reported their results.
Drako went back to his room and summoned the System. [Current Level: 1.] [Experience Progress: 18%.] [Dragon Bloodline: 0.1%.] [Vampire Bloodline: 0.1%.] [Abilities: Dragon Scales, Dragon Strength, Blood Sense, Blood Enhancement.] Drako looked at the screen. “Only eighteen percent.” [Correct.] “Then I have a long way to go.” [Affirmative.] Drako smiled. “Good.” He wasn’t disappointed.
For the first time in his life, he had a clear path forward. Train. Fight. Grow stronger. Learn the truth about his bloodlines.
He looked out the window toward the forest. The strange heartbeat still bothered him. But he pushed the thought away.
He had learned something important today. He didn’t need to rush. He didn’t need to prove himself to everyone.
He needed to become stronger one step at a time. What Drako didn’t know was that the creature he had sensed in the forest had already sensed him too.
Deep among the trees, two faint red eyes opened in the darkness. The creature remained hidden, watching the distant lights of Astra Academy.
It had no intention of attacking yet. It was waiting. And somewhere inside Drako’s body, the Dragon and Vampire bloodlines quietly responded to its presence.
