My DragonicVampiric System

Episode 4 — The First Real Challenge

The next morning, Drako woke before his alarm. For a few seconds, he remained still, staring at the ceiling while yesterday’s hunting exercise replayed in his mind.

The Shadow Fang. The Iron Horn Beast. The strange heartbeat he had sensed deep inside the forest. He still couldn’t explain what that creature had been.

The System appeared in front of him. [Good morning, Host.] Drako rubbed his eyes. “You really like doing that.” [The System is fulfilling its function.]

“Yeah, yeah.”

He sat up and looked at his hands. A faint golden glow appeared around his fingers before disappearing.

He had been thinking about his abilities since returning from the hunting zone.

His powers were strong compared with what he had possessed before awakening, but he had quickly realized something important: strength alone wasn’t enough.

He didn’t know how to control his new abilities properly. If he wanted to survive, he needed training. Drako dressed and headed toward the training grounds.

The sun was barely visible above the academy buildings. The grounds were almost empty. He walked toward one of the practice areas and activated Dragon Scales. Golden scales appeared across his right arm.

“Come on.”

He punched the training target.

BOOM!

The metal target shook violently. A crack appeared across its surface. Drako stared at it. “I used too much.”

He tried again, this time using less power. The target moved but didn’t crack. “Better.” He continued practicing.

Punch after punch, he learned how much strength he could use without losing control. After an hour, sweat covered his forehead.

He sat down and summoned the System. [Dragon Strength control: Improving.] [Dragon Scales control: Improving.] [Blood Sense control: Improving.] Drako smiled. “Not bad.” Footsteps approached.

He turned and saw Raizen standing several meters away with his sword.

“You’ve been here since sunrise?” Raizen asked. “Pretty much.”

Raizen looked at the damaged training target. “You’re stronger than you look.”

Drako smiled. “I hear that a lot.” Raizen drew his sword.

“Fight me.” Drako blinked. “Now?” “Now.”

Raizen stepped into the training area. Drako stood

. “What level are you?” “Level 3.” Drako’s expression changed slightly.

He was still Level 1. Raizen raised his sword. “I won’t use my full strength.” Drako nodded. “Neither will I.”

The fight began. Raizen moved first. His sword cut through the air.

Drako activated Blood Sense. He sensed the movement before the blade reached him and stepped backward.

Raizen changed direction immediately. Drako blocked with his forearm. Dragon Scales appeared just before the sword made contact.

CLANG! Raizen’s eyes widened.

“Interesting.” Drako pushed the sword away and attacked with his fist. Raizen dodged and countered.

Drako moved again. The fight continued across the training area. Drako could predict Raizen’s movements with Blood Sense, but Raizen’s technique was much more refined.

Drako realized something important. Blood Sense could tell him what was coming, but it couldn’t automatically make his body fast enough to avoid every attack. Raizen’s sword stopped inches from Drako’s shoulder. “You rely too much on your senses.”

Drako stepped away. “I noticed.” Raizen lowered his sword. “Your instincts are good. Your technique needs work.” Drako nodded. “Thanks.” Raizen sheathed his sword.

“Train your movement.” Then he walked away. Drako watched him leave. He respected Raizen more after the fight. Later that morning, Adrian and Mira arrived.

“You two were fighting?” Mira asked. “Training,” Raizen corrected. Adrian looked at Drako. “You look exhausted.” “I am.” “Good. That means you’re learning.”

The four attended their regular classes. Their instructors taught them about beast classifications, energy levels, and combat strategies.

Drako listened carefully. He learned that beasts were ranked from common creatures to increasingly dangerous categories.

The academy’s controlled hunting zone was designed for beginners because the strongest creatures had been removed or driven away.

That made Drako wonder about the heartbeat from yesterday. If the area was supposed to be controlled, why had he sensed something stronger hiding there?

During lunch, he asked Adrian about the hunting zone. “How long has the academy used that forest?” Adrian checked his device. “For decades.”

“Have there ever been reports of unusual beasts?” Adrian searched the database.

“There have been a few reports. Missing animals. Strange energy readings. Nothing serious.” Drako frowned. “Nothing serious?” “That’s what the records say.”

Mira leaned closer. “Why are you asking?” Drako hesitated. “I sensed something yesterday.” Raizen looked at him. “I knew it.” Adrian’s expression became serious.

“What did you sense?”

“A heartbeat. Something bigger than the beasts we fought.” Adrian looked at his device again. “Did you report it?”

“No.”

Mira stared at him.

“Why not?”

“Because the instructors told us not to wander.” Raizen nodded. “You made the right decision.” Adrian wasn’t convinced.

“We should tell someone.” Drako agreed. After classes, they reported the strange presence to their instructor.

The instructor listened carefully. “Where exactly did you sense it?” Drako described the location. The instructor’s expression changed slightly. “That area is supposed to be empty.”

Drako noticed the change. “You know something?” The instructor shook his head. “No. But I’ll have the area checked.” That evening

Drako returned to his room. He was about to sleep when the System appeared. [New Quest Available.] [Quest: Improve Combat Foundation.] [Objective: Complete 100 successful training strikes.] [Reward: Skill Point.] Drako smiled. “Finally.” He returned to the training grounds.

He practiced strikes until his arms became heavy. One hundred punches. One hundred kicks. One hundred defensive movements. When he completed the final strike, the System appeared. [Quest complete.] [Reward received: 1 Skill Point.] Drako opened his status.

He could use the point to improve one ability. He looked at Dragon Strength.

Then Blood Enhancement.

Then Blood Sense.

After thinking carefully, he chose Blood Sense. [Blood Sense upgraded.] [Range increased.] Drako closed his eyes.

The world became clearer. He could sense people across the training grounds. He could hear their heartbeats. He could even distinguish different levels of energy.

Then he felt something strange. A faint heartbeat came from beyond the academy wall. Drako opened his eyes. “That can’t be.” He focused.

The heartbeat was weak, but familiar. It was the same rhythm he had sensed in the forest. Drako stepped toward the wall.

The heartbeat disappeared. “Again…” The System appeared. [Unknown energy detected.] [Distance: approximately 700 meters.] Drako looked toward the forest. Someone—or something—was moving out there.

He wanted to investigate, but he remembered the instructor’s warning. He decided to wait.

The next morning, the academy announced that the hunting zone would be temporarily closed. Rumors spread quickly.

Some students said a powerful beast had been found. Others said the instructors had discovered illegal activity. Drako, Adrian, Mira, and Raizen exchanged looks.

“You think it’s connected?” Adrian asked. “Probably,”

Drako said. Before they could discuss it further, the instructor entered the classroom.

“The hunting zone is closed until further notice. Do not attempt to enter it.”

His voice was unusually serious. Drako noticed something else. The instructor was carrying a weapon.

That was unusual during normal class. Whatever had happened, the academy was taking it seriously.

That afternoon, Drako was walking toward the dormitories when a student stepped in front of him. It was a tall boy with dark hair and a confident expression.

“You’re Drako, right?”

“Yeah.” “I’m Kael.”

Drako had heard the name before. Kael was one of the strongest students in their year. “I’ve seen you training.” Drako waited. Kael continued.

“You’re improving quickly.” “Thanks.” Kael smiled. “I want to fight you.”

Drako looked at him. “I’m only Level 1.” “I know.” “Then why?” “Because your level doesn’t match your fighting ability.”

Drako stayed silent. Kael stepped closer. “Don’t worry. I won’t hurt you.” Drako smiled slightly.

“That’s what everyone says before a fight.” Kael laughed. “Tomorrow. Training Arena Three.” Drako nodded. “I’ll be there.” Kael walked away. Mira approached from behind. “You really attract trouble.”

Drako laughed. “Apparently.” But inside, he was excited. A fight against someone stronger would be an opportunity to test his abilities. That night, Drako trained harder than ever.

He practiced Dragon Scales until he could activate them instantly. He practiced Dragon Strength without wasting energy.

He used Blood Enhancement for short bursts, learning exactly how long he could maintain it. Then he practiced Blood Sense.

When he finished, the System appeared. [Combat foundation improving.] [Level: 1.] [Experience progress: 42%.] Drako stared at the number. He had already made significant progress.

Tomorrow, he would fight Kael. But before sleeping, Drako looked toward the forest through his window.

The strange heartbeat was gone again. Still, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was coming. He didn’t know when it would arrive. He didn’t know whether it would be friend or enemy.

But for the first time, Drako wasn’t afraid of what waited ahead. He was ready to face it one step at a time.
