Carlos equipped it without hesitation.
The vest was a little tight around his shoulders, but the iron pieces covered the places where a knife or arrow could kill him quickly.
He stored the throwing knives in his belt and applied the Weapon Repair Oil to the spearhead.
[Reinforced Long Spear durability fully restored]
[Next wave in 5 minutes]
Carlos picked up his spear and checked his surroundings.
A new sound came from outside the village.
Not goblin screams.
Growling.
[Wave 2 Enemy Information]
[Goblin Hunters x10]
[Tamed Forest Wolves x5]
Carlos tightened his grip on the Reinforced Long Spear.
The goblins in the first wave had been scavengers.
The real fighters were coming next.
Carlos had less than five minutes to prepare for them.
He poured more Pure Water over One.
The slime absorbed it slowly as its body returned to a round shape.

One’s HP: 78/110
Mana: 32/60

Reaching Level 2 had increased its maximum health and mana, but it had not removed the damage from the first wave.
"Stay still and recover."
Carlos left One inside the hut and moved through the village.
The Goblin Hunters would not attack like the Scavengers. If they had bows, hiding behind one wall would only allow them to surround him again.
The wolves were an even bigger problem.
They would be faster than the goblins and would not care about the reach of his spear once they leaped at him.
Carlos stopped beside the broken cart.
One of its wheels was still attached.
He kicked the damaged wood until the axle broke, then dragged the wheel and two long boards toward the narrow path between the huts.
Carlos placed the boards across the road and pushed the wheel behind them.
It was a terrible barricade.
But the path was only wide enough for two wolves to enter at once. Anything that slowed their first charge would give his spear time to work.
[Next wave in 2 minutes]
Carlos inspected the five throwing knives.
They were short, badly balanced, and made of dark iron.

Goblin Throwing Knife
Common Grade
A small throwing weapon made for Goblin hands.
Throwing Accuracy Penalty: 20% when used by larger races

"Of course."
He still placed all five at the front of his belt.
A bad throwing knife was better than no ranged weapon.
Carlos returned to One.
"We are going over there."
He pointed toward the barricade.
"You shoot from behind me. Wolves first."
One bounced once.
"And if I move, you move too. Do not chase me across the whole village."
The slime bounced again.
Carlos still did not know if it understood the difference.
[Wave 2 will begin in 30 seconds]
They moved into the narrow path.
Carlos stood several steps in front of the barricade. One remained behind the wheel with a clear line of fire through its broken spokes.
The growling became louder.
[Wave 2 has commenced]
Fifteen green lights appeared at one end of the village.
The five lights in front were low to the ground.
The wolves formed first.
They were almost as tall as Carlos’s waist, with grey fur, long teeth, and strips of leather tied around their bodies.
The Goblin Hunters appeared behind them.
Four carried bows.
Four held short spears.
The final two carried curved blades and wore pieces of leather armour.
One of them released a sharp whistle, making the wolves charge.
"One!"
A Water Shot passed Carlos and struck the first wolf’s front leg.
The animal stumbled but continued running with a light whimper that quickly turned into a growl.
Carlos lowered his spear.
The first two wolves reached him together.
He stepped to the side and thrust with less force but greater precision.
The spear entered the first wolf’s open mouth, and its body went limp, but the second leaped over it.
Carlos felt a spray of saliva and blood hit him, but he immediately turned toward the next one.
He could not pull the spear free in time.
Instead, he released one hand and struck the wolf’s face with his forearm.
Its teeth closed around his arm.
Carlos was thrown backward.

HP: 331/360

The wolf shook its head and tried to drag him down.
Carlos punched it between the eyes twice before its teeth loosened.
One fired from behind the barricade.
The water struck the wolf’s ribs and threw it sideways.
Carlos ripped his arm free, grabbed the spear, and stabbed the animal through its side.

[Tamed Forest Wolf eliminated]
The remaining three reached the barricade.
One wolf leaped over the boards.
Its back leg struck the wheel, causing it to fall directly in front of Carlos.
Carlos felt very lucky.
Taking advantage of the opening, he drove the spear down through its neck.
The other two pushed against each other in the narrow gap.
One fired again.
The Water Shot struck both wolves and forced them against the walls.
Carlos attacked the closest one.
His spear entered its chest, but an arrow struck his new vest at the same moment.
The iron reinforcement stopped the arrowhead from entering his body.
The impact still knocked the breath from his lungs.

HP: 319/360

Without the vest, that arrow would have entered his chest.
Carlos pulled the dead wolf in front of himself as another arrow flew toward him.
It struck the animal’s back.
"One, last wolf!"
The slime fired.
The final wolf leaped away from the shot and moved around the barricade.
Carlos threw one of the Goblin knives.
It spun badly through the air.
The handle struck the wolf’s nose.
"..."
The wolf growled in annoyance and sprinted even faster.
"That was supposed to look better."
The wolf charged immediately.
Carlos held the spear with both hands and waited until the last moment.
Then he moved half a step to the side, and the wolf passed him.
The next moment, the spearhead opened its throat.
[Tamed Forest Wolf eliminated]
[Tamed Forest Wolf eliminated]
All five wolves were dead.
But Carlos had no time to rest.
The Goblin Hunters reached the other side of the path.
The four spear users pushed the wolf bodies away from the barricade while the archers continued shooting.
Carlos took cover behind the corner of a hut.
One moved behind him.
An arrow followed them and entered the slime’s body.
It slowed inside the water but continued toward its core.
Carlos grabbed the wooden shaft and pulled it out before the metal tip could reach the bead.
His heart stopped for a second.
If he had not been there to pull the arrow out in time, the slime would have been finished.

One’s HP: 69/110

"Stay behind the wall."
The slime obeyed this time.
Carlos looked at the rooftops.
The archers had taken different positions. Two remained behind the spear users while the others climbed onto the buildings.
’I can’t repeat the same rooftop charge while four bows are watching me, but it isn’t like I am out of options. Not yet.’
Carlos could not help but take a deep breath.
This fight was going to be a long one.
