Somewhere in the south, past the territory of the Borderlands...
"We meet again, Minister Blackthorne," Druvis III, the High King of the Aurelion Empire, said with a smile. "I believe you are here to tell me some good news, yes?"
"Yes, Your Majesty," Edmund Blackthorne, one of the ministers of the Kingdom of Britannia, replied. "The King has agreed to proceed with your plan on the condition that we split the Borderlands in half."
"Of course." King Druvis nodded.
"However, the split you proposed doesn’t sit well with His Majesty," Edmund stated. "You proposed that we attack the Borderlands in a pincer attack. Yet, you insist on claiming the whole of Eden if we won the war. His Majesty wishes to alter the conditions of our agreement."
Druvis frowned in response, but still asked the Minister to continue whatever he was planning to say.
"The proposal is this," Edmund declared. "We will split the Borderlands equally in half and have joint governance over Eden."
Eden was the Holy Land of the Barbarians in the Borderlands.
There, a great dungeon that allowed them to hold their ground against their neighbors existed.
The dungeon provided them with treasures and artifacts, as well as skill books, allowing the barbarians to grow and prosper.
Because of that, the Aurelion Empire wished to take over this land and make it their own. Truth be told, they didn’t really care about the Borderlands.
Druvis didn’t care even if he had to hand over the entirety of the Borderlands to the King of Britannia in exchange for Eden.
However, although the King was old, he was no fool.
He understood that Eden was the real prize. With that, he would also like to get a share of this pie, which the Kingdom of Britannia didn’t possess.
While there were dungeon cities in the Kingdom of Britannia, they were only ordinary dungeons that went up to the 30th floor.
As for the Aurelion Empire, their dungeon cities only went up to the 50th floor.
Meanwhile, the dungeon in Eden was hailed as a Great Dungeon.
While it was not yet confirmed, both the King of Britannia and the High King of the Aurelion Empire believed that Eden was a dungeon with a hundred floors.
The difference between a dungeon with fifty floors and a dungeon with a hundred floors was like the gap between heaven and earth.
In the long run, whoever managed to take full control of Eden would become a powerhouse.
Eden was only discovered fifty years ago. According to their spies, the deepest floor that the barbarians had managed to conquer was only up to the 40th floor!
Druvis had no plans to let the Barbarians advance their conquest of Eden. It could make them truly strong, increasing their chances of invading the Aurelion Empire.
While it was called an empire in name, it was actually composed of five kingdoms that had made an oath hundreds of years ago to form an alliance.
The one who ruled over it was the High King, who was elected every thirty years by the High Council.
Each kingdom would take turns sitting on the throne of the High King, honoring the ancient oath their ancestors had made hundreds of years ago.
Druvis only had three years left in his rule. With that, he wished to make a great achievement that would allow him to extend his rule for another ten years.
This exception had happened more than once in the past, so he was certain he could pull it off as long as Eden became part of their empire.
"Joint governance, you say..." Druvis tapped the armrest of his throne with his hand as if considering the minister’s proposal. "Very well, but we will have a seventy-thirty split of the resources from Eden. We take seventy, you take thirty."
"Sixty-forty," Edmund insisted. "Deal or no deal."
"No deal!" Druvis answered without hesitation. "If you don’t agree to the proposal, then so be it. We can just pretend this conversation never happened."
For the first time, a frown appeared on Edmund’s face. The King of Britannia had assigned him as the chief negotiator for this collaboration.
If it were to fail, then he and his family would take the blame for the falling out between the two factions.
"I’ll inform His Majesty about your conditions," Edmund said, doing his best to remain calm. "Let’s talk again tonight."
"Sure," Druvis replied. "I hope the next time we talk, we will be able to see eye to eye."
Edmund smiled faintly before cutting off the connection. However, the moment the communication crystal turned dark, the minister began to curse Druvis’ entire bloodline.
It took him a full ten minutes to eventually calm down before he fixed his clothes and left the room.
"To the castle," Edmund said to his coachman as soon as he left his residence.
Although he had been chosen as the chief negotiator, the condition Druvis had proposed might not be to his King’s liking.
Because of this, he would need to get the King’s approval first before he agreed to Druvis’ condition.
When the carriage passed through the small forest that separated Edmund’s property from the city, two men appeared behind the trees.
"He is headed to the palace," one of the masked men said. "Should we follow?"
"No," the second masked man replied. "There’s a chance that we might get discovered. We have already completed our mission, so all we need to do is report it to Our Lady."
After coming to an agreement, both men soon disappeared without a trace.
The Kingdom of Britannia had sent messengers to the Radiant Empire to propose a truce.
This proposal was accepted, but it came with one condition. The condition was that news of the Radiant Empire and the Kingdom of Britannia collaborating with each other to attack the Beastkin Kingdom and the Barbarian Kingdom together would have to spread.
Although the King of Britannia was hesitant to accept this condition, he had no choice but to agree to it.
Once the truce took effect, he would be able to pull back the bulk of their forces from the north and order them to head south.
This movement alerted the barbarians and the Beastkin Kingdom, prompting them to focus on defense instead of offense.
A war of this magnitude needed a lot of planning. Plus, according to Edmund’s estimates, they would need a month to prepare the supplies of the army that would march south.
’Since the barbarians will prioritize defending Eden, our takeover of the other territories will not be a problem,’ Edmund thought to himself.
Unfortunately or fortunately, he wasn’t aware that there was a new Great Chieftain in the Borderlands.
And they would soon understand that the lands of the Earth Mother weren’t as helpless as they originally thought they were.
