My Life as an Awoken

A few days later I had finished running more calculations and was beginning to review the data when I started hearing a commotion coming from behind me.

It seemed as though someone was looking through the warehouses and were closing in on me.

Then I saw the door handle jiggle. I prayed that I had locked it when I went to the bathroom earlier.

I hadn’t. The door swung wide open.

The first thing I saw was the blinding light, the second was the silhouette of a buxom woman. One that seemed familiar.

Then I heard a familiar voice, "Wow, you look terrible. When was the last time you took a shower?"

I asked, "Xue Qing?"

She responded, "Who else? Do you know of another woman as attractive as me?"

"I guess not."

"Wow, you really aren’t feeling well. Normally you would have been sarcastic."

"Yeah, well reality is depressing."

"I know it is. But, usually you are Mr, don’t take life too seriously."

"It’s hard to say that when lots of people are dying and the world is falling to pieces."

"Falling to pieces is a bit of an exaggeration, but yes, lots of people are dying. That’s not a reason to give up. You still have family and friends who care about you. So, pull yourself together."

"Right, family. I forgot about them. I was too concerned about the bigger picture. I’m sure I have plenty of missed messages."

"I’m sure you do. So, why don’t you take care of that first. Then we can talk. Ok?"

"Yeah, ok."

I went off and messaged my family, they were all fine. Most of them had awakened an ability as well. The only one who didn’t was my grandmother

Mom awakened the ability to contract animals. My uncle gained the ability, conscious berserk. My grandfather awakened the ability of nature.

I could go further into their powers at a later date. First I had to talk to Xue Qing.

I walked back into the warehouse and said, "Thank you, I feel a lot more clear headed."

"Of course. If you are going to be hazy minded, it will only be because of me."

"Ah, yeah. Sure sure. Let’s get down to business."

"Sigh. Fine. Business it is. Time is of the essence, for you at least."

"Why me?"

"The Yamato government is about to take ownership of your RAM factory. Well, I say government, but they are actually working for the Sun Set Consortium.

The consortium had always planned to take over your RAM factory, but once they found out that you had improved RAM. They really ramped up their plans."

"They want to take over my factory? How do they figure they can do that?"

"The whole plan is pretty obvious if you know what you’re looking for. I don’t know if you remember but that girl from the government office, Kitsumi Kiyo. She works for the consortium, she was along to sow discord and make the process full of problems.

You don’t think they had a government worker stay in a rural town with you for over a month for no reason, right? She was also the one who incited the workers and paid the factory manager to incite them as well.

Didn’t you ever wonder why everything seemed to happen so quickly? I don’t know if burning your house was a part of that or not, but everything else certainly was.

Her boss was also helping behind the scenes. Your contract with the government says that you have to keep the factory running. But, if the workers aren’t working, then the factory isn’t upholding their side of the deal.

Usually it would have taken longer for the government to step in, but he has helped expedite that process."

"Her boss? That fatty? I knew he was up to no good."

"The fatty, Tanaka Hiroshi? No, he was a good worker that had a talent for managing. He got to his position with pure hard work. However, Ren Shiro, the previous team leader. He plotted against him and got him fired.

Now, he is the new manager and he has enough power to put pressure on you to either sell the factory or have it get taken over by the government. Both options will result with the factory ending up in the Sun Set Consortium’s hands.

"Then what am I supposed to do? Wait. How do you know about all of this? Have you known about this the whole time?"

"Yes, I have. It’s my job to know what everyone is doing. If you are wondering why I didn’t tell you, it’s because you wouldn’t have learned anything otherwise. And to be fair I did give you a hint when we first met. I told you that some powers will act without telling you."

"And that’s supposed to be a hint?"

"Isn’t it?"

"No, and you have been manipulating things from the shadows. How am I supposed to trust you again?"

"Please, you’re not actually that mad."

"That’s true. I don’t feel anything particular. Almost all people try to do things that they believe will benefit them. Some will call it manipulation, others will simply call it a choice. It, like most things in life, are a matter of perspective.

If you look at it from one side it is bad, then if you look at it from the other it is good. At the end of the day you have to make a decision on which side you want to view things.

I could see you as someone manipulative or as someone smart enough to get what she wants. Just like when I manipulated the stock market, to others I was a bad guy who took all of their money. But, I was just someone who made a choice that benefitted me.

Everyone tries to get what they want and you haven’t hurt me to get what you want. What is it you want, anyway?"

Xue Qing smiled seductively and said, "What do I want? Well, I want you."
