As the door swung open I saw what we had just barely descended into, it was what looked like an old decommissioned missile silo.
I asked in astonishment, "Is this an old missile silo?"
Xue Qing, looking amused, said, "While it does look that way, no. There are not any missile silos in the area because of the history. But this was a bunker. After the occupation of the area ended and various political talks were happening, this bunker was getting changed into a missile silo.
That was until the political talks ended and the work had to stop. So, no, it was never an actual missile silo. They were planning on making it into one and almost finished it before the plans had to be scrapped.
Since then it had been sitting here hidden and unused. That was until I found out about its existence and allied with the government to get it. After that I had to dump a lot of money to get it to where it is today."
"Wow, this place is massive. How deep is it?"
"It is 9 stories deep. The main silo is big, but we also have a large storage warehouse, and a bunker that is 5 stories tall."
"Oooh."
After that Xue Qing showed me around the place and introduced me to the people we ran into.
I saw that every floor in the silo was made of a grate-like material. That allowed you to see quite far down.
Every floor was something different, a power supply floor, a water cooling floor, the quantum computer floor, and the multiple supercomputer floors.
The storage warehouse contained large amounts of supplies, like food, and other necessities.
The bunker was the place I would be spending most of my time.
The floors were vast but not very tall. It had a cafeteria, recreational room, bedrooms, etc. The most important ones to me were the main bedroom and the control room.
The control room was like the control room you would see on a battle ship.
You had a main chair and desk that were basically surrounded by workstations. The work stations that were monitoring all of the functions of the entire bunker and silo pair.
While in the control room Xue Qing gathered everyone’s attention and announced that I was the new owner.
All of the workers seemed shocked. So, I reassured them that although I was the new owner Xue Qing was still going to be managing the company.
Once all of them were settled, Xue Qing showed me to the main bedroom.
When we got inside Xue Qing started, "Hey, do you know where we are now?"
"Like, in the bedroom?"
"No, not like that. I mean we are in a literal bunker, one of the safest places in the world."
"Where are you going with this?"
"Look, I might not know everything about you. But, I know enough that I can tell that there is something wrong. I know that everyone processes grief differently, and that you can’t force healing.
But, here, in this bunker. This is a safe place. You don’t have to keep everything bottled up. I have watched you over this last month. You have been apathetic. You were always quiet and reserved. But, now. Now it’s like nothing really matters.
You just go with the flow, you don’t really have any of your own thoughts. You just agree with whatever anyone else wants or says. I know that your family has always been hands off, and make your own decisions.
But, before you would have at least tried to talk them into coming here. Instead you said what you thought you had to, then when they said what they wanted you just shrugged and said ok.
Where is the confidence? The will? Right now you are just an empty shell.
I’m not asking you to change right away, or put on another facade. But, here. You don’t have to try so hard. You can relax and let the walls down...
Anyway, I’m going to read some reports about how the functions of the company have been while I was gone. You should get some rest."
After she said her piece she left. Which I was glad for, because I was feeling choked up. My throat was clenched tight and burning, while my eyes stung.
I took a deep breath and swallowed it back down.
Whew. That was close, I almost broke down. I don’t even remember the last time someone showed concern for me.
While I won’t break down from sadness, I will from relief or comfort.
I was tired from the month long trip so I took a shower then went right to sleep.
...
I don’t know how long I slept for, but when I woke up Xue Qing was sleeping right next to me.
Her long hair was tussled and laying in every which way. She was peacefully sleeping, with her mouth slightly ajar, and her chest rising and falling with her breath.
Her lustful appearance was still just as powerful now as it always was, but I was distracted by her defenseless peace. Her lying there completely at ease, somehow comforted me.
While I would have liked to continue to stare at her, I needed to get to work.
I changed into my suit and left the room. I walked to the cafeteria and got some breakfast. Which was some steamed buns and deep fried dough sticks. The steamed buns were amazing and the deep fried dough sticks were alright.
Afterward, I headed to the control room.
In the control room I was met with the uneasy glances of workers and scientists. I just ignored them and booted up the main computer console. As it came to life the others got to work monitoring the activity.
I started by running the information gatherer to compile more data and feeds to watch. The news played for a bit, then I changed it to security feeds of monsters. I watched a few monsters torment regular people for a bit, until they were put down by the local hunters.
