With the tide turning in our favor you would have thought it would have been a blowout in our favor. But, reality works a bit differently.

Bullets were still thwacking all around us. Blood was diluting into the puddles on the ground and the only shouts you could hear were the shouts of the combatants. They were either shouting directions or shouting in pain.

The fire fight didn’t last much longer. Our side was the first to run out of ammo, but the other side didn’t seem to notice. They held back and kept shooting at the cars, until they too ran out of ammo.

Once that happened it turned into a melee. Our 4 remaining bodyguards versus their 16. They took out 8 of our guys and we took out 14 of theirs.

When the melee started the difference in quality became apparent.

While the other side had clearly used body training techniques they were still lacking compared to ours. Our men were like adults fighting children.

I watched as one of our men punched one of the enemies in the face. His entire face caved in, with his eye balls popping out.

However, it is still 4 versus 16, that is 1 man for 4 for theirs. With them using knives they managed to take out another one of our men. The rest dispatched the remaining enemies.

When the dust settled the only ones remaining were 3 of our bodyguards and us. But, our bodyguards were not unharmed, they were cut up and one was shot. He had a hole in his shoulder from when he was shot peeking out to return fire.

While the fight was going on I had come to a conclusion on who had attacked us. It had to be Mr. Li.

He was the only person who knew we were here. He was the only one who knew we had planned to meet today.

I should just storm his office. But I don’t have the forces to do that right now. Plus, I bet he isn’t even in the building right now.

That guy is smart enough to know that that would be a remarkably dumb decision. That level of arrogance is what gets young masters killed.

I had our people get into the rear vehicle that was still functioning. We headed straight for the airfield.

Once Xue Qing and I were on the plane I had the remaining bodyguards go to the hospital to get treatment.

I imagine that the police must have some kind of corruption, because otherwise they would have shown up. This is the capital after all. There’s no way a fire fight takes place and no one shows up to stop it.

That means that there is some kind of interference at play. I didn’t think that Mr. Li had that kind of power. Even if his company is very wealthy in the capital it is a small fish in a large ocean.

He has to have another backer. That’s the only explanation.

But, who?

Very few people have the kind of power that can influence the police. A handful at most.

Since we were on the plane and already in the air, I was finally able to ask, "Are you alright?"

With everything that was happening I failed to ask such an important question until I felt we were at least a little safe.

Xue Qing replied, "I’m fine. It’s not the first time this has happened. I’m just pissed. Whoever dared to attack us is going to pay. I know that weasel Li couldn’t have done this. He doesn’t have the power. If anything, this stinks of something my family would do."

"That thought had crossed my mind. But why would they? We, or rather you, are much more valuable than Mr. Li’s one business."

"In a general sense that’s true. But, you never know what plots are happening behind the scenes. If they have a deal worth more, they definitely would try to kill me. They tried plenty of times when I was younger."

"Then it might be time for a change in their power structure. A new head of the family for the new era."

"As nice as that sounds they have a small army of ability users. It would be extremely difficult to take out anyone of actual power or influence. We don’t really have the militaristic power to do that. We also need to make sure it was them. We don’t want to start a war with a powerhouse if we don’t have to."

"Right. We need to do our due diligence."

...

Back at the bunker, in absolute safety, we were able to dive into our investigation.

We hacked into Mr. Li’s phone and computers. After a thorough inspection we found... nothing. Everything was completely clean, a bit too clean. There was absolutely nothing that seemed out of place, not a single web search that was not work related.

But, he was the only explanation that made sense.

I turned to look at Xue Qing and said, "What about a burner phone? That would explain why we haven’t found anything."

"Yeah. I looked into the business side of things and something interesting popped out. My family is one of the major shareholders of the parent company."

"I see. So, it looks like Mr. Li used a burner phone to contact the Fengbao family and they put together a hit squad to get rid of us."

"That is the most likely situation. But, we still need evidence. It could still be a frame up done by another powerful family. It wouldn’t be that difficult, since most of this is circumstantial."

"Right. Then I will brute force it. I will pull all of the videos of Mr. Li since we showed up. Then I will filter through it to find when he uses a phone and check to see which phone. If I can confirm usage of a phone that is not his main, then I will track it back to where it was purchased from. That way I can get the number and get the messages."

"Ok. That will take a while, while you do that I will track where the hit squad came from."
