Chapter 170: Tower Defence

With our plans decided we got right to work.

Xue Qing was using the computer and AI to shut down the various businesses they had. While I would build the tower defence systems.

The design I had in mind was based on an automatic bollard. I would only have to size it up and reinforce some parts to have a functioning hidden tower.

The part that would take the most time is drilling down and excavating the place to house it.

Now that’s a pretty easy fix. With some money you can get excavators with drill attachments and they can make quick work. The constraining factor is the size or diameter of the hole and removing the dirt.

Even then it goes to rock pretty quick. The drill isn’t going to work on that. So we will have to switch to a jackhammer. They have an excavator attachment for that as well.

I also had to get a directional boring machine to install pipe without digging up the ground.

With everything ordered for the foundation I got to work designing the tower. The two main ways I saw building the tower were first to have a single turret on top, the second was to have the pillar filled with turrets.

The most ideal version would be to combine the two ideas. The top of the tower would have a much bigger turret while the tower would be full of smaller turrets.

The turret I was planning to use is the Phalanx gun. However that is a Gatling gun, which has alternating barrels to mitigate heat build up. An advanced coil gun doesn’t have that problem. We have already solved the heat build up.

The main reason I chose the Phalanx gun is because of the fast fire rate and tracking ability. The Phalanx gun has a fire rate of either 3,000 or 4,500 rounds per minute based on its two fire rates.

An advanced coil gun doesn’t have to worry about cartridges or bullet casings which means that it can "rechamber" faster than a normal gun. An advanced non-upgraded coil gun can fire up to 3,000 rounds per minute, just like the Phalanx gun.

A Phalanx gun is made of a few main parts, the gatling gun, the belt feeding system, the computer tracking system that uses radar, and a turn table to rotate on.

I plan to replace the gatling gun and improve the targeting system. The old targeting system could suffer interference if too many radars are used next to each other. I plan to have a few different types of radar with multiple of each type.

They will be spaced out to help mitigate interference and have better triangulation for better position recognition. That way the AI in control of the defences will have much better targeting.

I plan to keep the belt feeding system and the pivoting system. Each coil gun will be belt fed and I plan to have the entire tower to be able to spin and pivot, hopefully eliminating any possible blind spots.

The bottom turrets will fire 20mm armor-piercing rounds, each round features a dense 15mm penetrator core. I also have the option of switching rounds to fire self-destructing high-explosive incendiary tracer rounds instead of solid penetrators to eliminate downrange collateral damage risks when firing over populated areas.

The incendiary rounds are a bit finicky so they have a slower fire rate and velocity. But, the effectiveness is worth that minor trade off.

The top turret will be more of a large cannon style. While the smaller turrets can still shred armored vehicles in a second a large cannon style is a good just in case to have.

It fires a massive projectile with a full foot diameter. It is a high precision artillery style coil gun used in case of tanks, battle ships, or large planes.

I don’t imagine they would be used here, but you never know. It’s good to have just in case.

With the towers designed, I started up the massive 3D printers and started printing out the towers. Even with the special 3D printers there are still parts that need to be assembled and that is going to take some time.

3 days later. With multiple excavators working 24/7 per hole the base of the holes were done. However, to account for the recoil of the artillery style gun we had to implement more supports. We also had to account for water filling up the hole with drainage holes.

Another 4 days later, we were ready to install the towers. Which was a blessing because we started to notice surveillance.

People were hiking to the neighboring mountain and taking pictures. Which on its own isn’t suspicious, but the frequency at which people were taking photos had increased.

We were prepared for an attack with lots of trained men, armored vehicles, and enhanced coil guns ready to shred any attackers into oblivion.

The last of our defences, the towers were the last things to be installed.

We had 13 towers, each had an artillery style gun on top. Each tower had 7 layers with 5 turrets on each layer. Each tower had 35 turrets and one main artillery. For 13 towers that is 455 turrets and 13 artillery.

At 3,000 rounds a minute for 455 turrets that’s 1,365,000 rounds a minute. A single round weighs about half a pound. That’s 682,500 pounds of material every minute.

Needless to say we don’t have anywhere close to that amount laying around. So, we will have to be precise and frugal with our discharges.

The towers were built over the course of 3 days and with every finished tower we felt just a little safer.

With the radar and detection methods covering the entire area we gained even more security.

Once everything was done the only thing that looked out of place were the tracks the excavators left behind. The rest was the same untouched mountainous wilderness. Only those that had been paying attention wouldn’t be fooled.

But, that’s fine. Let them come.
