My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly
Chapter 25: Endless Devourer, The Dead SeaThe black-market smuggler’s ship crashed heavily against the massive, dark waves of the Dead Sea. The water was pitch black, thick, and constantly foaming. It smelled strongly of rotting salt, rusted metal, and old, corrupted magic. A freezing wind whipped violently across the wooden deck, tearing loudly at the pitch-black canvas sails.
It had been two full weeks since they secretly left the port of Kraken’s Point. Saile Retrac stood quietly at the very edge of the ship, leaning against the wet wooden rail. He looked out at the endless, dark horizon.
The rough, heavily scarred sailors gave him plenty of room, refusing to make eye contact with the Catastrophe-Class Heretic. They were terrified of the deadly sea, but they were much more terrified of the quiet teenager carrying a giant black sword.
Saile’s chest ached deeply, but not from any physical injury. He thought about his little sister, Avery, every single day. He had left her behind in Valerius to protect her from the Church, but the separation hurt much worse than any broken bone.
Pope Naissac had put a one million gold coin bounty on his head. The entire Holy Continent was currently hunting him. If Saile ever wanted to see his sister again, he had to get much stronger. He had to push his EX-Rank talent to the absolute limit.
"Staring at the empty water will not raise your level," Naicul drawled lazily inside Saile’s mind. The ancient God sounded incredibly bored and sarcastic. "You have been standing there feeling sorry for yourself for twenty minutes. Are we hunting today, or are you just going to cry into the ocean?"
"I am stretching," Saile replied out loud. He rolled his shoulders, loosening his tight Level 35 muscles. "The water is freezing cold. And it is completely filled with toxic magic."
"Perfect," the ancient God sneered happily. "Toxic magic builds character. But before you jump in like a wild dog, we need to fix your terrible technique."
Saile frowned, looking down at his scarred hands.
"What is wrong with my technique?"
"Everything," Naicul scoffed loudly. "You fight like a street brawler, not a king. When you swing that black sword, you push your dark mana into the entire blade. You light the whole thing up like a giant torch. That works perfectly fine against stupid, wild sea monsters, but it is a massive waste of energy. If you fight Pope Naissac like that, he will crush your heart before you even blink."
"Then how do I fix it?" Saile asked, gripping the heavy hilt of the Calamity Fang.
"You need to learn macro-mana control," Naicul explained smoothly, stepping fully into the role of a harsh mentor. "You only need the dark energy on the exact millimeter of the sharp edge. If you condense the dark lightning to just the very edge of the blade, it cuts ten times deeper, and it uses half the energy. You have my ancient combat experience hiding in your muscles. You already know how it feels. You just need to practice until your human body remembers."
Saile smiled slightly. The entire dynamic between them was slowly changing. In the beginning, Naicul only wanted to steal his body and erase his soul completely. Now, the ancient God was actively teaching him how to survive and fight efficiently. It was a twisted, highly sarcastic relationship, but it was working.
"Fine," Saile said softly. "I will practice the macro-mana control right now."
"Good," Naicul said casually. "There is a pack of Level 38 Sea Scorpions swimming right below our hull. They have very sharp, poisonous stingers. Try not to die."
Saile took a deep, steadying breath. He stepped up onto the slippery wooden rail, bent his knees, and dived straight down into the freezing black ocean.
The cold hit his body like a solid wall of ice.
The Dead Sea was incredibly murky and dark, but his Level 35 senses pierced right through the heavy gloom. Directly below the ship’s wooden hull, five massive Sea Scorpions waited for him.
They were easily the size of large wolves, heavily armored with thick, dark purple shells. They snapped their massive front pincers together aggressively. Long, barbed tails floated high above their heads, dripping with a nasty, glowing green venom that sizzled even underwater.
Red System screens flashed brightly in the dark ocean.
[Target: Sea Scorpion. Level: 38.]
"Control your power!" Naicul commanded sharply.
Saile held his breath. He gripped the Calamity Fang tightly with both hands. He did not let the EX-Rank dark mana explode wildly out of his chest.
Instead, he forced his muscles to squeeze the energy tightly. He pushed the dark purple lightning down his arms, channeling it completely into the very edge of the pitch-black odachi.
It was incredibly difficult. It felt exactly like trying to hold a wild, angry animal by the neck. Sweat mixed invisibly with the freezing saltwater.
But it worked perfectly.
The flat side of the heavy sword stayed totally dark, but the sharp cutting edge glowed with a blinding, condensed line of pure black lightning.
The first Sea Scorpion lunged upward through the water. It thrust its long, barbed tail directly toward Saile’s chest, aiming to inject its deadly green venom into his heart.
Saile did not panic.
He planted his heavy boots flat against the slippery wooden hull of the smuggler’s ship. Pushing off the wood with explosive Level 35 speed, he launched himself into a rapid, underwater twist.
He spun his body gracefully out of the way, letting the sharp stinger glide harmlessly past his ribs.
While spinning, he swung the Calamity Fang in a tight, precise horizontal slash.
The newly condensed dark magic worked flawlessly. The blade did not catch or drag in the thick water. It sliced right through the monster’s hard purple shell with absolutely zero resistance.
Saile cleanly cut the giant scorpion entirely in half.
Thick black blood instantly clouded the freezing ocean.
"Perfect!" Naicul cheered darkly. "Now kill the rest of them!"
The other four scorpions attacked all at once, totally enraged by the spilled blood. They snapped their heavy pincers, swarming Saile from every single direction.
Saile moved like a deadly, graceful shadow.
He dropped his weight low, pulling his knees tightly to his chest. He whipped his right leg around in a forceful, underwater spin sweep.
The sudden, violent physical motion created a strong, swirling vortex in the water, throwing two of the heavy scorpions completely off balance.
As the monsters tumbled backward, Saile popped back up. He thrust his sword forward in two quick, flawless strikes, piercing their glowing red eyes and completely destroying their brains in a single second.
The final two monsters attacked from above, bringing their heavy green stingers down.
Saile pointed his boots down and kicked hard, launching himself upward into a tight backflip. He sailed directly between the two falling stingers.
As he flipped completely upside down, he swung the Calamity Fang with his entire might. The condensed black lightning formed a perfect, deadly arc in the water.
He decapitated both Level 38 beasts in a single, beautiful motion.
The fierce underwater battle was over in less than thirty seconds.
Saile floated quietly in the dark water, his chest burning painfully as he finally ran out of air.
The five massive bodies began to glow brightly. They dissolved rapidly into beautiful blue and gold orbs of light. The glowing orbs rushed through the salty water and slammed powerfully into Saile’s chest.
Golden System screens popped up, lighting up the dark ocean.
[EX-Rank Talent: Endless Devourer Activated.]
[Enemies Defeated. Massive EXP Gained.]
[Level Up!]
A rush of incredible, burning heat flooded his tired muscles. The freezing cold vanished entirely. The Endless Devourer talent pushed his physical limits even higher.
He had just hit Level 36.
Four more items dropped from the fading light of the scorpions. They floated gently upward in the dark water. Saile reached out quickly and grabbed them before they could sink.
[Loot Drop: Weapon Fragment x3 acquired.]
[Loot Drop: Skill Shard x1 acquired.]
He smiled happily. He pictured the items vanishing, storing them safely inside his silver storage ring.
He had completely mastered the macro-mana control on his very first try.
Saile swam quickly to the surface, breaking through the rolling black waves with a loud, desperate gasp of air. He grabbed the heavy rope ladder hanging off the side of the smuggler’s ship and climbed up onto the dark deck.
He dropped heavily onto the wooden floorboards, completely soaked and dripping wet. He breathed heavily, wiping the cold saltwater out of his brown eyes.
The rough, scarred sailors walked right past him, carrying heavy wooden crates. They were totally used to his crazy hunting routine by now.
"That was completely acceptable," Naicul admitted quietly in his mind.
Coming from the ancient God, that was an incredibly massive compliment.
"You actually conserved your energy. Your cuts were clean. If you keep fighting like that, you might actually survive the Holy Continent."
"Thank you," Saile panted, sitting up slowly.
He felt absolutely incredible. His new Level 36 strength buzzed hotly in his veins.
But the warm feeling of safety did not last.
Suddenly, the quiet, rhythmic rocking of the wooden ship came to a dead, terrifying stop.
The howling ocean wind died completely.
The black, choppy waves flattened out instantly, turning the dark ocean into a smooth, silent mirror.
The air grew incredibly heavy, pressing down hard on Saile’s tired shoulders. It became very hard to breathe.
"Get away from the edge, boy," Naicul warned sharply.
The God’s voice turned completely cold and serious.
"Something massive is swimming right under the hull. It is not a normal fish."
Before Saile could take a single step backward, the dark, quiet ocean began to bubble.
