My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly
Chapter 30: System Alert, The Undead KnightThe words hung heavily in the dusty air.
For a second, the five wealthy Academy elites did not move. They sat frozen in the dirt of the dark hallway. They stared at Saile Retrac with wide, completely terrified eyes.
Luap, the arrogant A-Rank noble, swallowed hard. His expensive silver armor rattled loudly as he trembled. He looked down at the ten piles of broken stone that used to be Level 40 golems. Then, he looked back up at the wet, bleeding teenager casually holding the pitch-black odachi.
They finally realized the horrible truth. The dirty, F-Rank peasant they had used as trap-bait was a complete monster in disguise.
"I said, get up," Saile repeated. His voice was completely flat and cold. "You are still walking in front."
Luap scrambled frantically to his feet. He did not reach for his glowing broadsword. He just backed away, raising his shaking hands in total surrender.
"Y-yes, my lord," Luap stuttered weakly. His voice cracked with pure fear. "We will walk. Just please... do not kill us."
The female noble quickly grabbed her green staff and pulled herself up from the dirt. The two Holy Knights scrambled to their feet, keeping their heads lowered respectfully. The arrogant elites turned around and started walking slowly down the dark corridor.
Saile followed right behind them. He rested the heavy Calamity Fang casually on his shoulder. His wet boots crunched loudly against the bone dust. He kept his brown eyes locked on the backs of the trembling nobles. They were totally broken.
The hallway ended at a set of massive, heavy stone doors. The doors were at least twenty feet tall. They were covered entirely in thick, ancient chains and carved with images of screaming demons. This was the entrance to the Sanctum. This was the final boss room of the hidden dungeon.
The elites stopped walking. Luap stared up at the giant stone doors, his face completely pale.
"Open it," Saile commanded quietly.
Luap stepped forward with shaking legs. He placed his hands flat against the cold rock and pushed. He grunted, straining his A-Rank muscles, but the massive doors did not move a single inch.
"I... I cannot do it," Luap stuttered, stepping back in total panic. "It is too heavy!"
Saile let out a long, tired sigh. He completely ignored the stuttering, humiliated elites. They were totally useless.
Saile walked right past the trembling students. He planted his boots firmly against the stone floor. He placed his free hand flat against the cold, heavy rock. He pushed his Level 36 strength deep into his arm. His tight muscles bulged under his torn tunic.
Boom!
The heavy stone doors cracked loudly under the extreme pressure. The thick, ancient hinges groaned and screamed. Dust fell heavily from the tall ceiling. Saile pushed harder, forcing the massive doors to slowly scrape open.
He stepped inside the Sanctum.
The air in the final boss room was completely different. It was incredibly cold.
The temperature plummeted to absolute freezing in a single heartbeat.
Saile’s breath instantly turned into white mist. A thick layer of white frost covered the ancient stone floor. Sharp icicles hung dangerously from the high ceiling. The wet, torn clothes on Saile’s body immediately began to freeze, turning stiff and hard against his skin.
He walked slowly into the massive, circular room.
In the exact center of the frozen chamber stood a true nightmare.
It was a towering Undead Knight.
The monster was easily ten feet tall. It wore heavy, rusted armor made of dark, corrupted steel. A torn, faded black cape hung from its broad shoulders. Its face was completely hidden behind a thick iron helmet shaped like a screaming skull.
The Knight was not moving. Its massive arms and legs were bound tightly to the stone floor by thick, glowing magical chains. A giant, jagged greatsword rested in the frost right next to its heavy iron boots.
Red System screens flashed instantly in front of Saile’s eyes, warning him of the terrible danger.
[Target: Cursed Undead Knight.] [Level: 45.] [Threat Level: Extreme.]
"Another Level 45," Saile whispered out loud. His heart hammered painfully against his ribs.
He gripped the hilt of the Calamity Fang tightly with both hands. He waited eagerly for Naicul to speak. He expected the ancient God to mock the chained monster. He expected Naicul to yell at him, to demand that he use macro-mana control, and to complain about how weak the enemy looked.
But the dark corners of Saile’s mind were completely silent.
"Naicul?" Saile thought.
There was no answer. The loud, sarcastic God did not say a single word.
Suddenly, the Undead Knight shifted its massive weight.
The ancient monster slowly lifted its heavy head. Deep inside the dark eye sockets of the iron helmet, twin flames of pale blue fire suddenly ignited. The monster stared directly at Saile.
The Knight raised its right arm. It pulled forcefully against the glowing magical chain binding its wrist.
Crack!
The thick chain shattered into a million glowing pieces. The heavy physical strength of the Level 45 boss was totally overwhelming. It ripped its left arm free, then completely shattered the chains holding its legs.
The Undead Knight was totally loose.
It reached down and grabbed the hilt of its giant greatsword. The rusted metal blade erupted with blinding, pale blue fire. The freezing temperature in the room dropped even lower.
The monster did not roar. It simply stepped forward and swung the massive greatsword in a wide, horizontal slash.
A sharp, violent wave of freezing ice magic shot out from the blade. It flew across the room, rushing straight toward Saile’s chest.
Saile did not panic. He pushed his EX-Rank energy deep into his boots.
"Phantom Step," Saile whispered.
Boom!
A loud sonic boom cracked in the freezing air. Saile turned into a blurry, vibrating shadow. He vanished completely from the center of the room just a fraction of a second before the ice wave hit.
The freezing magic smashed violently into the heavy stone doors behind him. The thick doors froze completely solid and shattered into pieces with a loud, ringing crash. The terrified Academy elites screamed from the hallway, running away from the deadly magic.
Saile appeared instantly near the left wall of the giant chamber. But the Undead Knight was impossibly fast. It spun its heavy body around, raising its greatsword high above its head to bring it down on Saile.
Saile planted his boot firmly against a thick stone pillar. He launched into a rapid wall-run. He sprinted three quick steps vertically up the freezing stone, totally avoiding the crushing overhead strike.
Crash!
The Knight’s greatsword slammed brutally into the base of the pillar. The solid rock exploded outward. A visible shockwave ripped through the cold air. The massive stone column began to collapse, falling heavily toward the ground.
While running high up on the falling pillar, Saile pushed off the rock. He dived backward through the smoky, freezing air.
He tucked his knees tight to his chest. He executed a flawless aerial twist kick, spinning beautifully to keep his balance. The heavy chunks of flying stone missed his body completely. He dropped toward the ground and landed smoothly in a tight shoulder roll recovery.
He popped right back up to his feet, instantly sliding into a low, ready combat stance.
He held the Calamity Fang forward, keeping the sharp edge pointed directly at the giant monster. His Level 36 muscles burned with hot energy, fighting aggressively against the freezing cold.
The Undead Knight slowly pulled its greatsword out of the ruined pillar. It turned its glowing blue eyes back toward Saile. It raised its weapon, preparing to launch another devastating, icy attack.
"Naicul, tell me the weak point," Saile demanded firmly in his mind. He needed the God’s ancient combat experience right now. "Where do I strike it?"
The dark void inside his head remained completely, totally quiet.
Naicul was completely silent. The God was not fighting the mental seal. He was not trying to force a System override. He was simply gone. It felt like the ancient presence had totally withdrawn into the deepest, darkest corner of Saile’s soul.
"Naicul!" Saile yelled out loud, his voice echoing against the frosty walls. "What are you doing?"
The mental link stayed dead.
Saile frowned deeply. This was completely wrong. The ancient God never shut up during a fight. He loved to complain. He loved to brag about his own power. For him to go completely silent in the middle of a Level 45 boss fight meant something was terribly, fundamentally wrong.
Saile kept his eyes firmly locked on the approaching Undead Knight. The giant
monster dragged its heavy sword across the icy floor. It did not charge blindly. It moved with a slow, disciplined, professional grace. It walked exactly like a trained general marching into war. Every single footstep was perfectly balanced.
Suddenly, a beautiful, ringing chime echoed loudly in Saile’s ears.
A bright golden System screen flashed directly in the center of his vision. It was not a red warning screen. It was not a quest notification or a loot drop.
It was a message Saile had never, ever seen before.
[System Alert: Naicul’s Emotion—Profound Grief detected.]
Saile froze completely. His breath caught sharply in his throat.
Grief?
The cruel, sarcastic, incredibly violent God who wanted to murder the entire world was feeling grief?
Saile looked past the golden screen. He stared closely at the towering Undead Knight. He looked at the faded black cape. He looked at the rusted, corrupted steel armor. He looked at the way the monster held its heavy greatsword with perfect, disciplined balance.
The ancient God was not ignoring the fight. Naicul was looking directly through Saile’s eyes, staring completely heartbroken at a ghost from his own past.
