My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly
Chapter 31: Ancient Lore, The Loyal SwordThe freezing air inside the Sanctum was absolutely bitter. Thick white frost crawled slowly across the heavy stone walls. Saile Retrac stood perfectly still in the center of the giant, circular room. His breath formed tight clouds of white mist in the cold dark.
Just a few feet away, the towering Undead Knight dragged its massive greatsword across the icy floor.
Saile kept his brown eyes locked onto the Level 45 monster. He waited for the familiar, arrogant voice in his head. He fully expected Naicul to yell. He expected the ancient God to issue a ruthless kill order. He expected a bright red System screen to flash, demanding he slaughter the beast for massive EXP.
But the red screens never came.
Instead, the golden System alert hovered quietly in his vision.
[System Alert: Naicul’s Emotion—Profound Grief detected.]
Saile swallowed hard. The silence inside his mind felt incredibly heavy. It pressed down on his chest much harder than the freezing temperature of the room.
"Naicul?" Saile asked softly in his mind.
For a long moment, the dark void remained totally quiet. Then, a low, shaky breath echoed inside Saile’s skull.
"His name is Ser Valen," Naicul whispered.
The ancient God’s voice cracked. It did not sound proud or cruel. It sounded completely broken. It was filled with a deep, crushing sorrow that made Saile’s own heart ache painfully.
"He was my right-hand man," Naicul continued quietly. "He was my most loyal
general. One thousand years ago, when the monsters of the Abyss flooded this coast, Valen stood right beside me. We fought back-to-back in the mud and the blood. He never took a single step backward."
Saile looked closely at the towering monster. He saw the faded, torn black cape hanging from its broad shoulders. He saw the rusted, ancient steel armor holding the brittle bones together.
"When the Saints betrayed me," Naicul said, his voice trembling with raw anger and heavy grief. "Valen refused to bow to them. He refused to call them gods. He fought them to protect my resting place."
"What did they do to him?" Saile asked gently.
"They cursed him," Naicul growled. The hot, boiling hatred returned to his tone for just a second. "Those SSS-Rank cowards could not break his loyalty in life. So they cursed his soul in death. They chained him inside this dark tomb. They forced him to suffer eternally in undeath, guarding the very ruins he died to protect."
Saile tightened his grip on the hilt of his black sword. The tragic lore of the ancient world painted a terrible picture. The Holy Church was built on lies and pure cruelty. They turned a loyal hero into a mindless monster just to punish him.
The Undead Knight raised its heavy iron head. The pale blue fire burning inside its helmet flared brightly. It took a slow, heavy step forward.
"Saile," Naicul whispered.
The ancient God did not issue a System Quest. He did not offer any rewards or demand a violent massacre. For the very first time since they made their dark pact, Naicul spoke to him not as a God, but as a man. He made a humble, desperate plea to his mortal host.
"Saile... put my friend to rest. Please."
Understanding the massive weight of the request, Saile nodded his head slowly.
"I will," Saile promised out loud.
He stood up perfectly straight. He did not want to fight this honorable knight using cheap tricks or hidden magic. He wanted to give the fallen general a proper warrior’s death.
Saile closed his eyes and let go of his breath.
He completely dropped his F-Rank disguise.
He stopped suffocating his EX-Rank mana core. He stopped hiding his true power. He opened the floodgates inside his chest and let the dark, violent energy explode outward.
Boom!
A massive, terrifying wave of pure black mana erupted from Saile’s body. The sheer physical pressure of his Level 36 power hit the room like a hurricane. A deafening sonic boom cracked the freezing air. The dark energy blasted the thick white frost completely off the stone walls. The ground trembled violently under his wet boots.
Back in the dark hallway, the five wealthy Academy elites screamed in pure horror.
Luap, the arrogant A-Rank noble, fell hard onto his hands and knees. The terrifying pressure rolling off the "peasant" made it impossible for him to breathe. His expensive silver armor rattled loudly against the stone floor.
"What is happening?" the female noble cried out. She dropped her green magical staff, shaking uncontrollably. "He was F-Rank! He had no magic!"
"He lied!" Luap gasped, his face turning totally pale. "That is not human magic! He is a monster!"
Saile ignored the cowardly students completely. They did not matter. The only thing that mattered was the honorable duel standing right in front of him.
Saile raised the Calamity Fang. The pitch black odachi hissed loudly as the dark EX-Rank mana flooded into the hilt. Thick, aggressive arcs of purple lightning snapped along the sharp edge of the blade. The rusted iron hummed with a hungry, dangerous power.
Ser Valen stared at the dark lightning. The blue fire in his eyes flickered warmly.
The Undead Knight raised its massive, rusted greatsword. The heavy weapon erupted with blinding, freezing ice magic. The monster roared—a hollow, tragic sound that echoed endlessly across the high ceiling.
Valen charged forward.
Despite his massive size, the general moved with incredible, terrifying speed. His heavy iron boots cracked the stone floor with every single step. He crossed the large room in a fraction of a second, bringing his freezing greatsword down in a brutal overhead strike.
Saile did not use Phantom Step to run away. He met the attack head-on.
Saile pushed off his back foot and dashed forward. He swung the Calamity Fang upward with his entire might, aiming directly for the falling greatsword.
Clang!
The two heavy blades collided with absolute, terrifying force.
A massive circular shockwave exploded from the impact. The violent clash sent a sharp sonic boom ripping through the cavern. The sheer physical pressure blew a
massive crater into the dirt floor beneath their feet. Bright orange sparks mixed wildly with freezing blue ice and dark purple lightning, showering the entire room.
Saile’s boots slid backward across the stone, scraping loudly against the floor. His Level 36 muscles burned hotly as he held his ground against the Level 45 boss.
Valen pulled his heavy sword back and immediately launched a wide, horizontal slash aimed right at Saile’s ribs.
Saile dropped his weight low to the ground. He planted his left hand flat against the icy dirt and whipped his right leg around in a rapid spin sweep. He completely ducked under the deadly ice magic. The freezing blade sliced through the empty air, totally missing his body.
Using the rapid momentum from his sweep, Saile popped back up to his feet. He chained his fluid movement into a tight, rising uppercut with the hilt of his black sword.
Smack!
The heavy hilt slammed directly into the bottom of Valen’s iron helmet. The ground trembled from the hit. The tall monster stumbled backward, its skull snapping back from the force.
Saile did not stop. He pushed off the stone floor and launched into a high backflip to create distance. As he flipped completely upside down, he landed smoothly on the side of a thick stone pillar.
He planted his boots firmly against the rock and executed a rapid wall-run. He sprinted three quick steps vertically up the freezing stone, gaining the high ground.
Valen recovered instantly. The Undead Knight swung its greatsword upward, firing a massive, freezing crescent of pure ice magic straight at Saile.
Saile launched himself off the pillar, diving forward through the air. He tucked his knees tight to his chest and unleashed a flawless aerial twist kick. He spun his body perfectly, dodging right past the deadly ice magic. The freezing wave crashed into the pillar behind him, turning the solid stone entirely to ice
before shattering it into a million pieces.
While falling back toward the ground, Saile gripped the Calamity Fang tightly with both hands. He kept his dark magic highly condensed on the sharp edge, focusing deeply on his macro-mana control.
He swung the black sword down, clashing once again with Valen’s rising blade.
Boom!
Another massive shockwave shook the underground tomb. The air shrieked loudly
around them. It was a beautiful, devastating dance of pure swordsmanship. There were no dirty tricks. There were no cowardly traps. It was just two warriors clashing in the dark.
Saile landed perfectly on his feet, holding his ground against the towering giant. He looked into the glowing blue eyes of the fallen general.
He was going to end this curse. He was going to give Ser Valen his peace.
