My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly
Chapter 6 - 5% Sync Rate,The Blackwood ForestThe cold dirt pressed hard against Saile’s face.
He gasped loudly, his eyes snapping open, then sat up so fast that his vision spun in blurry, dark circles.
His hands immediately flew to his back, feeling for the terrible, jagged break.
He remembered the heavy silver boot. He remembered the devastating crack of his spine snapping in half. He remembered the blinding, white-hot agony that had knocked the breath right out of his lungs.
But there was no pain.
Saile touched his spine, running his fingers up and down his back. His bones were perfectly whole.
His skin was completely smooth, without a single cut or bruise.
He pushed himself off the ground, springing to his feet with a smooth, effortless kip-up.
His Level 10 muscles felt tight and packed with explosive energy.
The physical damage was entirely healed.
Then, the smell hit him...
The salty ocean breeze of Orali was completely gone.
The air smelled heavily of thick, warm copper.
Saile looked down at his feet.
The pale dirt of the village square was painted a dark, sickly red. It was not just a small puddle.
The red stain stretched for yards in every direction.
Silver armor lay scattered on the ground, melted into useless, smoking slag.
There were no bodies.
There were no severed limbs.
The three Holy Inquisitors were completely gone.
They had been turned into a fine, red mist.
Saile’s stomach twisted violently.
He stumbled backward, his boots sliding in the wet, bloody dirt.
"What happened?" Saile whispered, his voice shaking.
"I handled it," Naicul drawled lazily inside Saile’s mind.
The ancient God sounded incredibly smug and completely bored.
"I told you to go to sleep. I stepped in, I killed the arrogant thieves, and I fixed your fragile little spine. You are welcome, by the way."
Saile looked at his own hands.
They were covered in dried blood that did not belong to him.
A golden System screen flashed silently in the corner of his vision.
[System State Updated: Sync Rate increased to 5%.]
Saile felt a sudden, freezing chill run through his chest.
Five percent.
He had lost another piece of his soul.
He could actually feel it.
A cold, heavy apathy sat quietly in the back of his mind.
He was looking at the brutal, gory remains of three human beings, but a small, dark part of his brain did not care at all.
That scared him more than the blood.
"Avery," Saile gasped, his eyes searching quickly around the ruined square.
The villagers were huddled together near the broken wooden stage. They were covered in dust and debris, clutching each other tightly.
"Avery!" Saile called out, his voice full of relief.
He took a quick step forward, reaching his hand out toward his little sister.
She screamed.
It was not a scream of relief.
It was a high, piercing scream of pure, unadulterated terror.
She scrambled backward on her hands and knees, kicking the dirt as she desperately tried to get away from him.
Saile froze instantly.
He lowered his hand.
"Avery... It is me. It is Saile."
"Stay back!" the village elder yelled.
The old man stepped in front of Avery, his hands shaking violently as he pointed a broken wooden pitchfork directly at Saile’s chest.
"Do not take another step, you monster! Stay away from us!"
Saile felt his heart shatter into a million tiny pieces.
He looked at the crowd.
Every single villager was staring at him with wide, horrified eyes.
Women hid their children behind their skirts.
Grown men backed away, their faces cold with total shock.
They did not see the sweet, pacifist boy who used to help them fix their fishing nets.
They saw the cold, silver-eyed demon who had just erased three grown men from existence with a single snap of his fingers.
"I am not a monster," Saile pleaded softly, his vision blurred with hot tears.
He looked right at his sister.
"Avery, please. It is me."
Avery peeked out from behind the old man’s legs.
She was crying uncontrollably, her small shoulders shaking.
She looked at Saile’s hands, which were dripping with the Inquisitors’ blood, and then she buried her face in the dirt.
She could not even look at him.
She was completely terrified of her own brother.
The emotional fallout hit Saile much harder than the Inquisitor’s physical kick.
It felt like a heavy stone crushing his chest all over again.
"They fear you," Naicul whispered coldly in his mind.
"As they should. You are a God now, boy. You do not need the love of insects."
"Shut up," Saile thought back fiercely, pushing the ancient voice away.
Saile took a slow step back.
The villagers flinched wildly, thinking he was going to attack them.
The fear in their eyes told Saile everything he needed to know.
He could never go back to his old life.
That peaceful, quiet fisherman was dead and long buried.
"Listen to me," Naicul said, his tone turning completely serious.
"We do not have time for you to cry. Those three men were Holy Inquisitors. When they do not report back to the Holy Capital, the Church will notice, and they will not just send three men next time...
"They will send an entire army. They will send S-Rank Paladins to burn this whole coastline to ashes."
Saile’s breath hitched.
Naicul was right.
He was a walking time bomb.
If he stayed in Orali, the Church would destroy the village just to kill him.
If the Sync Rate rose again and Naicul took control, the God might just slaughter the villagers himself out of pure annoyance, as he was the greatest danger to Avery’s life right now.
Saile then made the most heartbreaking decision of his entire life.
He had to leave.
He had to draw the Church’s attention away from Orali, and he had to do it immediately.
He wiped his bloody hands on his torn tunic and looked at Avery one last time.
"I am sorry," Saile said loudly, his voice bouncing across the silent, bloody square.
"I am leaving. The Church will come looking for the Heretic. Tell them I went north. Tell them the truth. Tell them I am a monster, and tell them I ran away."
Avery looked up, her brown eyes full of tears and confusion.
"Saile?"
"Be brave, Avery," Saile whispered softly, even though she could not hear him.
He turned his back on his home and walked away, not looking back because he knew if he looked back, he would break down and cry.
He walked past the ruined houses, past the destroyed docks, and headed straight for the thick, dark tree line of the Blackwood Forest.
As he walked into the heavy shadows of the trees, a new goal settled firmly into his mind.
He could not let Naicul take over again.
Every time he lost control, he lost a piece of his soul.
He had an EX-Rank Talent.
He had the Endless Devourer.
He did not have a level cap.
If he wanted to survive, and if he wanted to protect his mind, he had to get stronger using his own willpower.
He had to level up fast enough to permanently cage the ancient God inside his head.
"You think you can lock me away?" Naicul laughed mockingly, sensing the boy’s thoughts.
"You are welcome to try, kid."
A low, angry growl interrupted their conversation.
Saile stopped walking because he felt the ground shaking slightly.
On stopping, a Forest Stalker stepped out from behind a huge, twisted oak tree.
It was a giant, mutated wolf with thick gray fur and glowing yellow eyes.
The System instantly flashed a red warning screen above the beast’s head.
[Target: Forest Stalker.]
[Level: 12.]
The wolf struck forward with terrifying speed, its razor-sharp claws aiming directly for Saile’s throat.
Saile didn’t panic.
Instead, his eyes hardened with pure, focused determination.
He needed EXP, and this beast was lucky to be his first target.
With a sudden burst of speed, Saile dashed forward to meet the wolf.
Right before the beast’s claws could hit him, Saile struck his foot hard against the thick trunk of a nearby tree.
He executed a flawless wall-run, running three steps up the vertical bark to completely avoid the wolf’s deadly strike.
As the wolf passed beneath him, Saile pushed off the wood.
He launched himself into a spinning aerial twist kick.
Boom!
His heel slammed brutally into the back of the wolf’s neck.
A visible shockwave exploded from the impact, sending the heavy beast crashing flat-faced into the dirt.
The ground trembled under the heavy blow.
The wolf screamed, scrambling wildly to get back on its feet.
But Saile was already moving.
He landed smoothly in a crouch, immediately chaining his momentum into a rapid spin sweep.
His leg whipped across the forest floor, kicking the wolf’s front legs right out from under it.
The beast fell hard, its defenses completely broken.
Saile twisted his hips, throwing his entire body weight into a devastating, upward right uppercut.
Smack!
His fist connected cleanly with the wolf’s lower jaw.
The sheer force of his Level 10 strength shattered the monster’s skull instantly.
The wolf was lifted completely off the ground before crashing back down, totally lifeless.
The beast’s body quickly dissolved into glowing blue and gold orbs of light and rushed into Saile’s chest, filling his veins with a rush of hot, intoxicating energy.
[EX-Rank Talent: Endless Devourer Activated.]
[You have slain: Forest Stalker (Level 12).]
[EXP Gained: 300 EXP.]
Saile stood up slowly, rolling his shoulders to loosen his tight muscles.
He did not use his rusted harpoon.
He did not use Naicul’s dark magic.
He used his own hands, and he won.
He looked deeper into the dark, unwelcoming shadows of the Blackwood Forest.
There were hundreds of monsters hiding in there.
Every single one of them was a stepping stone.
Every single one of them was a chance to level up.
Saile pulled up his golden System interface, his eyes locking onto the numbers.
He was going to devour everything in his path.
