Stepping into her Soul Realm had once been an agony worse than any wound her body could suffer:
Sienna had not wept black blood while in her Soul Realm for appearance, nor had those dark trails beneath her violet eyes been some natural ornament of the Nether Goddess. They were the visible consequence of a soul being forced to sustain far more than it possessed.
Her Soul Realm demanded power merely to exist:
Every black lake, every continent of unfinished bone, every Nether storm and every ancient corpse buried beneath its dead horizons drew upon her soul. Entering that realm meant allowing its laws to close around her consciousness.
Assuming her true Nether Goddess form meant carrying the full weight of its sovereign authority.
Her current soul strength had never possessed enough strength to support all of it.
The black tears had been pieces of that soul breaking down beneath the strain.
Yet according to everything Sienna had just revealed, the previous night had achieved far more than either of them had dared anticipate.
Her physical cultivation had risen, her cultivation foundation had consolidated and her soul had stabilised and grown incomparably stronger.
Even her Soul Realm, that ancient wound filled with Nether and Death, had finally ceased tearing at her whenever she entered it.
More astonishingly, Sienna had stepped into the Divine Queen Realm after spending the entire night refining the essence she had received from Phei alongside the remaining essence preserved from the Great Immortal God’s feather.
The feather had played a part... a significant one... but the greater transformation had come from Phei.
Dravenna did not ask how the Young Dragon had possessed enough Soul Energy to accomplish such things short of miracles.
Some questions were too enormous to be asked casually inside a moving car.
Sienna’s soul was already stronger than the combined souls of thousands of True Divine cultivators.
’She is the Nether Goddess, for fuck’s sake.’
Even if she devoured every trace of spiritual essence contained within Earth, stripped its ley lines bare and swallowed the life force of its mountains and oceans, it would barely be enough to sustain her soul for long.
Yet Phei had not merely sustained it; but he had nourished it, strengthened it and even expanded the world anchored to it. And somehow, after giving her enough Soul Energy to perform what should have been an impossible restoration, he had remained alive.
Dravenna turned her gaze toward the road again.
Whatever had truly happened between them went beyond ordinary Dual Cultivation the way she knew it.
But Sienna would never tell Dravenna about the bond that had formed between her and Phei. That belonged to them alone. No family, no ally and no ancient power had any right to peer into it.
More importantly, there was a far more pressing matter before them.
Dravenna studied Sienna’s profile for another moment, then sighed with almost theatrical envy.
"You have become even more beautiful, Goddess."
Sienna glanced at the little pest beside her; her violet eyes were cold, luminous and mercilessly pleased with themselves.
"What?"
Dravenna blinked. "I complimented you."
"Did you delude yourself into believing we were ever in the same league of beauty?"
Dravenna stared at her then she shrugged.
"Technically, I have been more beautiful than you for several good years. You only managed to surpass me a few hours ago."
"Exactly."
Sienna’s chin lifted slightly.
The faint satisfaction on her face would have looked unbecoming on anyone else. On the Nether Goddess, it carried the solemn cruelty of a heavenly decree.
"And you will remain beneath me for eternity, pest." Sienna’s violet eyes remained fixed upon the road, her voice carrying the calm certainty like she was discussing a law of heaven that had already been written and therefore required no argument. "With every passing day, I will only become more beautiful than the last time you saw me, while you slowly fall further behind, little dragon. Soon, standing beside me will make you resemble some backward village girl who wandered into the presence of a Goddess by mistake and somehow forgot to kneel."
Dravenna’s lips parted to say something but nothing came out.
For perhaps the first time since Sienna had known her, the Jade Dragoness simply sat there with no clever answer waiting behind her teeth.
Her jade eyes widened by the smallest degree, then narrowed, then widened again as if her mind had rejected the insult, reconsidered it, examined the logic supporting it (who Sienna was and who Dravenna was) and returned with the deeply unfortunate conclusion that the little monster beside her actually was right.
Sienna spared her one brief sideways glance and regarded her with the serene superiority of an ancient Goddess checking whether a lesser creature had finally understood its place, then returned her gaze to the winding road ahead.
Inside, however, she was enormously pleased.
Dravenna had finally shut up.
A small miracle.
But Sienna did not allow the satisfaction to reach more than the faintest softening at the corner of her lips.
A Goddess had standards, after all.
One did not openly celebrate after reducing a Jade Dragoness to silence with nothing more than the future threat of superior beauty.
Dravenna remained frozen for several more painful seconds.
Unfortunately for her dignity, her mind had already begun performing the comparison:
Sienna’s body was still catching up to what she truly was:
Her divine beauty had just started awakening; her body was only now beginning to bear the weight of her original existence properly, and every increase in cultivation, every recovered fragment of divinity, every further reconciliation between her body, soul and ancient power would only draw her appearance closer to the impossible form she once possessed.
Dravenna, meanwhile, was already monstrously beautiful by mortal standards.
That was precisely the problem.
She was already close to the summit of what her present self could offer without some tremendous transformation of her bloodline, physique or cultivation.
Sienna was still climbing toward a summit Dravenna could not even see.
The realization settled with all the tenderness of a heavenly tribulation.
"Yes," Dravenna finally muttered.
Sienna’s eyes flicked toward her again.
Dravenna stared through the windshield with the haunted dignity of someone who had just looked several centuries into the future and disliked the scenery.
"If everything continues exactly as it is now," she admitted with immense reluctance, "then I suppose standing beside you eventually might make me look..."
Her jaw tightened.
Sienna waited and Dravenna could practically feel the smug little Goddess waiting beside her but she refused to give her the satisfaction.
Unfortunately, silence itself had already confessed.
Sienna’s lips curved by perhaps half a millimeter.
Dravenna saw it.
Her expression immediately soured.
"I deeply regret bringing this up... I was complimenting you."
"You compared yourself to me."
"That was apparently my first mistake."
"Your first mistake was believing there was a comparison."
Dravenna slowly turned her head.
Sienna remained perfectly composed, both hands resting lightly on the steering wheel... the sheer arrogance of the girl was almost magnificent.
"You know," Dravenna said after another moment, "most people say thank you when someone compliments their beauty."
"Most people require reassurance."
"And you don’t?"
"I own mirrors... and self-aware of what I am."
Dravenna stared at her.
Sienna continued driving.
A laugh nearly escaped Dravenna before she strangled it beneath what remained of her wounded pride.
Somehow, this entire conversation had begun with Phei.
More specifically, with the absurdity of the Soul Energy he had awakened far earlier than any sane cultivation law should have allowed. Dravenna had been attempting to understand what his soul had done to Sienna’s, how his essence of his pathetic Mortal cultivation had done all that to the reincarnated Nether Goddess and why Sienna’s condition had changed so dramatically after their union:
Somewhere along that perfectly respectable road of inquiry, she had made the catastrophic decision to mention Sienna’s increased beauty, she had compared it with her own and Sienna had taken the compliment, sharpened it into a divine weapon and used it to beat her dignity unconscious.
Now Dravenna was apparently an uncultured village girl who would one day need permission to stand beside the Nether Goddess without embarrassing the scenery.
She rubbed her temple.
Ancient Goddesses were dangerous conversational opponents.
One misplaced compliment and a woman could suffer a cultivation deviation of the self-esteem.
Sienna glanced at her:
"You have become quiet."
"I am mourning."
"What?"
"My dignity."
Sienna considered that.
"It was that fragile?"
Dravenna closed her eyes. "I preferred you when you barely spoke."
"I still barely speak."
"That’s what makes every sentence from you worse and hurtful."
This time Sienna could not completely suppress it.
The corner of her mouth lifted into a tiny, victorious smile before she returned her attention to the road, leaving Dravenna beside her to contemplate the series of terrible life decisions that had transformed a discussion about Phei’s impossible Soul Energy into an existential crisis about whether she would eventually become the Goddess’s village attendant.
The truly offensive part was that the pressing matter was not that:
Phei’s Soul Energy remained impossible... his relationship with Sienna remained stranger than either of them properly understood and Dravenna had somehow learned only one indisputable truth from the entire conversation.
Never discuss beauty with the Nether Goddess unless one possessed a very sturdy sense of self.
Dravenna cleared her throat.
"Now that you have reached the Divine Queen Realm, will you help Phei take down Danton?"
