The cold gripping Hell’s Paradise Island had deepened until it no longer felt like weather.
Winter had not yet formally entered the island’s calendar, but the night appeared unwilling to wait for permission.
Frost gathered along the roads in thin silver veins, the winds descending from the mountains carried a bite sharp enough to slip through clothing and settle against bone, and every breath released beneath the open sky became a pale ghost that lingered for several moments before dissolving.
The cold that reached beyond the flesh, pressing icy fingers against the soul itself as though searching for the places fear preferred to hide.
Perhaps the ancient land beneath the hotels, estates, roads and glittering towers had sensed what was approaching and drawn winter around itself as armor:
The coming hours would hurl families that had stood for centuries into a wilderness of fire, grief and retaliation, and the island appeared to be bracing before the first scream had even been given breath.
Trees across the Endless Forest stood motionless beneath the darkness, their branches drawn together like witnesses gathered around an execution ground. Hell’s Paradise Lake stretched beside them in black and sovereign silence, its surface refusing every weak reflection thrown toward it by the distant city.
The moon and stars had abandoned the night entirely.
Whether clouds concealed them or something greater had persuaded them to look elsewhere, the heavens offered no light to the mortal plane below it:
Only the somber artificial glow of the city remained, thousands of lamps and windows burning across the urban heart of Paradise like embers trapped beneath glass. Beyond that enormous gathering of human brilliance, there was nothing but the cold, the forest, the river and the lake; three ancient bodies watching civilization prepare to wound itself again.
Danton found the lightless island agreeable.
The less the heavens witnessed, the better.
Darkness would wrap itself around his plans and swallow the movements of the people he had gathered, though he hardly required such camouflage personally.
At the Saint Stage, Danton could cross the island without disturbing so much as a sleeping bird’s dream. He could fold his aura inward until the world forgot to notice him, move through the breathing spaces between detection and pass above entire estates while their guardians continued staring into the wrong shadows.
The night could hide him, but it was not necessary.
It was merely polite enough to assist his almost infinity power.
His subordinates did not possess that luxury.
If the remaining Void-Djinns had been available for the task, everything would have been laughably simple carrying victims away before their beds had time to cool.
The Chained could have achieved something similar if Danton had been willing to spend their power them carelessly, but the five elves had been preserved for a purpose far more valuable than dragging frightened mortals out of their houses.
Fortunately, the assignment given to the six men standing before him required very little true power.
Most of the Dragon’s women were mortals.
’Beautiful, cherished mortals, perhaps.’
Women Phei had gathered around himself, spoiled, protected and convinced that his affection had placed them beyond consequence.
Yet in the face of cultivation and real formidable power, they remained fragile things filled with blood, breakable bones and souls unprepared for violence from the hidden world Phei was protecting them from.
Kidnapping several of them would not be difficult.
’Killing them would be easier still.’
The only challenge was separating the insects from the monsters guarding them.
Phei had to be drawn away first, fortunately, he wasnt here; he was powerful despite his pathetic cultivation, people didnt seem to realize what the Young Dragon could do with his Void-Ice’s Infinity Control than changing dresses...
Danton wasn’t among the blissfully ignorant.
Sienna could not be allowed anywhere near either, nor could Dravenna.
The old Immortal who would’ve interfered elsewhere had fortunately already vanished, removing one particularly unpleasant uncertainty from the board. Hayashi though remained along with his two children, but Danton was confident he could handle all three personally if the situation demanded it.
Better still, he could extinguish them so thoroughly that even whatever came after death would struggle to remember their shapes.
Oh so he thought, maybe he was right, or maybe not.
To Danton, the greatest obstacle was Maya Scarlett.
The rambling disaster.
While Marcus had always possessed the charming habit of charging into danger with the confidence of a man who believed humiliation required an appointment like he’d done with Phei days ago; Danton preferred preparation.
That was why he was staying as fas as he could from Phei.
He wasnt strong enough to take on Danton, not even close but Danton has his own reasons why he avoided the Young Dragon.
Before choosing his targets, he had studied every powerful presence around Phei, and Maya’s name had appeared too many times beside too many unexplained incidents for him to dismiss her as another soft girl hiding behind the Dragon.
She might have been the strongest being currently standing within Phei’s circle.
That possibility frightened Danton.
He admitted it easily within the privacy of his own mind.
Fear, when properly used, was not cowardice.
But it was instead information sharpened by survival.
Maya’s presence rarely announced itself through pressure or violence, yet the world behaved strangely around her; memories slipped, awareness bent and powerful beings overlooked what should have been impossible to miss.
She smiled, rambled, worried about furniture and spoke as though her thoughts had been poured into her mouth without first being organised, but beneath that harmless disorder lived something Danton had no desire to confront carelessly.
Fortunately, Maya possessed limitations.
Earth’s Laws would not tolerate her true strength being released openly:
If Danton pushed her hard enough, endangered enough people she protected and forced her to draw upon the depth she kept hidden, she would reach the threshold the realm refused to endure.
Once that happened, the Laws would seize her and expel her from Earth before her power could settle.
Better still, those same Laws protected him in a manner that was almost insulting.
His current power was borrowed. His existence, as far as the governing laws of Earth were concerned, remained tied to the unawakened mortal standing beneath it. Maya could not unleash her power against him without making herself the intruder.
If she lifted so much as one scarlett divine finger with enough power to truly threaten him, the realm would judge her first.
Danton sighed contentedly as a smile touched his mouth.
The universe had always possessed an excellent sense of cruelty when one understood how to exploit its rules.
He stood upon a rocky precipice where three sovereignties met:
Behind him, the Endless Forest climbed in dark layers toward the unseen mountains. Below, Hell’s Paradise Lake stretched into cold infinity, its water black enough to resemble a portion of the night that had fallen and refused to return to the sky. Ahead, Hell’s Paradise River stretched unburdened by the distant city rose in pale towers and scattered light, civilization crouched beneath the darkness without understanding that six of its most practiced predators were about to enter it.
The men before Danton wore ordinary black clothing without symbols, armour or visible weapons.
They appeared forgettable by design, their faces plain enough to dissolve inside a crowd and their bodies trained to move without inviting the eye to follow.
Marcus used them whenever a mistake needed to lose its witnesses, when blood required cleaning from expensive floors or when an inconvenient memory needed to be removed from the world along with everyone carrying it.
They had proven their worth during the Selene incident.
When Marcus forced himself upon the girl, these men had erased the mess around him with methodical devotion. They killed those who had seen too much, removed staff who might speak and slaughtered the security guard who discovered the footage and attempted to preserve it.
By sunrise, records had disappeared, bodies had been moved and the few surviving witnesses had been given enough terror to make silence feel like mercy.
They were cleaners in the service of several Legacy Families, though Marcus enjoyed using them most.
The complete organisation was much larger, its branches extending through police stations, hospitals, security companies, private military contractors and morgues. Danton had no need for all of them tonight.
Six experienced men were quieter than an army, and this assignment depended upon precision rather than spectacle.
Danton allowed his gaze to pass over each face before saying, "You know the targets. You know which ones are protected consequences and which ones can disappear without the heavens developing an opinion. You will not improvise, indulge yourselves or attempt to prove anything. You will take those I assigned to you, remove every witness who cannot be controlled and wait for further instruction before killing anyone."
The man standing nearest the edge bowed his head.
A pale scar ran from his temple into his hairline, though his expression remained empty; he could’ve healed it with healers or other resources but he liked it since it made him look scary; so he thought:
"And if the Dragon notices before extraction is complete?"
"You will die," Danton answered pleasantly, watching the man’s eyes tighten.
"Do not mistake that for a threat. I am merely saving us the inconvenience of pretending otherwise. If Phei notices you before I isolate him, your training, cultivation level, experience and little collection of artifacts will amount to several expensive ways of becoming a corpse."
