My Three Classes Are Supposed to Be Average
Chapter 31: The Patient Beyond SalvationMax had only taken a few steps away from the infirmary before someone called him again. Turning around, he saw that the academy staff member was standing at the doorway. To his surprise, Max was being summoned by the Academy Head Office. Looking at the time, it was still bright outside, but the sun had already set. Calling a student after class hours was definitely not related to the academy, so it had to be related to yesterday's incident. However, was that not already solved in the morning and somewhat settled by the noble families?
Regardless of his thoughts, Max went to the Head Office. As soon as he arrived, he was called inside. The Academy Head Teacher sat on his majestic chair as usual. In front of the chair sat a few people; Max could tell they were not Department Teachers but outsiders just by looking at their attire. He quickly walked before the desk, gave a courteous bow, and stood still for the Head Teacher to speak.
"Student Maximus, please take a seat." The Head Teacher pointed at the empty chair. Max sat down and waited.
"So, how are you feeling from that horrifying incident of yesterday?" the Head Teacher asked after a small pause.
"Yes, sir, I feel good, since I did not get affected by the poison," Max said.
"That is good. The investigation is still going on, so do not worry; the culprits will be caught without fail," the Head Teacher said.
Max did not say anything. He simply nodded his head with a small amount of confusion regarding the topic they chose to discuss. Did he simply call him to ask about his well-being? That did not seem correct. The Head Teacher had a ton of work to do; he did not have time for such matters. Although it was a serious matter from Max's perspective, to the Head Teacher, it was not.
While thinking, he gave a side glance to the people sitting on the other side of him. There was a total of three people. A young man and a lady, both seeming to be the same age, sat on the chairs. Another man stood behind them; he looked like a personal guard.
"Student Maximus, please meet Mr. and Mrs. Thure Curfman, friends of mine," the Head Teacher introduced the couple.
"Hello," Max said, looking at the couple. They nodded to his greeting.
"Your deeds from yesterday spread quickly. Mrs. Thure heard about it, and she came here to ask you a favor." The Head Teacher began the main topic of why he was summoned.
"Would you like to hear their request?" he asked again.
Hearing the Head Teacher's words, Max could guess what was coming; after all, what he did yesterday was obvious. They must have been here to ask him to cure someone, similar to the curly-haired girl. He didn't have any issue with this, as he gained something from these matters: Skill Proficiency. Since he wanted to increase his proficiency urgently, he would not refuse. Thus, he nodded his head while looking at the couple.
As soon as he nodded, the man quickly stood up and walked before him, extending his hand. Seeing this, Max also stood up and extended his right hand for a handshake.
"What you did yesterday was a remarkable achievement. Most Veteran Healers often fail to do it," the man praised his actions from yesterday.
"Thanks, Mr. Thure," Max said.
To be honest, he was slightly surprised by this praise. If even Veteran Healers often failed, did that mean what Moon said about the high casualty rate was true?
"We came here specifically to request you to cure our daughter, who has been bedridden for almost a year," the man said.
"A year ago, when she was 11 years old, she was affected by a similar kind of poison. At that time, we did not have any Elixir to save her, so we had to use a Healer. However, the healing did not fully remove the poison. The residual poison stayed with her. Although she was not fully healed, she could still walk and act like a normal kid. However, the issue arose when we finally found an Elixir. When she consumed the Elixir, instead of curing her, it left her bedridden. We tried multiple Experts to cure her, but everyone shook their heads after seeing her condition."
The man explained the entire situation, which was a sad incident for a kid to go through. Max did not know exactly what could have caused her condition. By his guess, the residual poison and the Elixir consumption must have caused some kind of backlash.

However, Max doubted his skill could work on this complicated case. The earlier healing and the Elixir must have created some kind of newly mutated disease that affected her. His current [Salvation] had only 3% Skill Proficiency after healing the curly-haired girl. Would it be enough to cure this girl? His Mana consumption also had to be taken into consideration. If he prematurely healed her, similar to the person who healed her initially, there were chances that whatever was affecting her might get worse, if not create a new variation of the disease.
Max felt that if his Skill Proficiency increased to at least 15%, he would have full confidence. Meanwhile, his Mana channeling would also improve alongside his proficiency. Considering all the scenarios, Max decided he would help her, but not right now.
"Mr. Thure, do not worry. I will definitely do everything to help your daughter," Max first assured them before he could explain his plan.
"Tell me about your daughter's condition," Max asked.
The man was somewhat confused by the question, as he had already explained the situation. He looked back at his wife, then said,
"She only takes fluid foods, has a constant fever, sometimes gets seizures, sleeplessness…" The man's voice faltered, realizing just how much his daughter was suffering.
"Has this condition been persisting for a year?" Max asked.
"Yes," the man nodded.
"Very well, do not worry. I will cure your daughter. Please come back in two days. I will travel to your house and check on your daughter," Max explained.
Hearing the timeframe of two days, the wife's expression changed. She suddenly stood up, trotted towards Max, and held his right hand in both of hers as she started to cry.
"You have to come today! My daughter... I cannot watch her suffer for much longer. She is just a kid. Please, you have to help me." She knelt, as if begging Max.
Max could easily understand her situation. They must have heard about the incident at the cookhouse and urgently come here, hoping that her daughter would be cured and return to normal today itself. However, now seeing that he was asking them to wait for two days, her expectation of her daughter walking today must have crumbled.
"Mrs. Thure, please stand up. I will definitely check your daughter's condition. You can believe that 100%," Max said, as her husband lifted her up to stand and she let go of his hand.
"It is not like I am refusing to come today because I am busy or have some other commitment. However, after hearing about your daughter's condition, I felt that I might not be able to cure her with my current self. I need a few days to gain that confidence. I hope you understand my situation. You have waited for a very long time; just wait for a few more days. I will do all I can to cure your daughter."
Max meticulously explained the situation. After explaining things, he looked at the Head Teacher, who was silently watching the discussion.
Seeing this, the Head Teacher stood up from his chair and walked to the front. "Mr. and Mrs. Thure, do not worry. Student Maximus is hesitating to help you today for your daughter's sake, not because he has the intention of not helping you. Since your daughter's situation is very complicated, Student Maximus must feel 100% confident before he takes this issue into his hands. Since he promised he will be ready in two days, please send a carriage; he will be ready by then."
The Head Teacher nodded his head to Max, and Max returned the nod as well.
It took a few moments for the lady to calm down. After her husband explained things, she was ready to wait for two more days. Following this, Max left the Head Teacher's office. Since it was almost dinner time, he directly went to the canteen. Because it was slightly early, he ate before anyone else arrived and directly went to the library, picking out a few books about poison.
---
Once he reached his dorm, he started to read. Since he possessed the Healer Class, he had to gain extensive knowledge about these kinds of matters. Without knowing exactly what was happening to a person, using common healing could worsen the situation, just like how the kid's condition had worsened after the initial heal.
He had yet to learn if there were different types of healing procedures for different types of conditions. For the past month and a half, everyone had been going through practicals to improve the basics of healing and mana control. Although he had used the Skill [Salvation] in the nick of time with no other option, it had somehow worked. However, what if it had backlashed at that time? It would have been a difficult situation.
Max's eyes moved through the pages. The various types of poison effects provided a lot of revelation for him. Some poisons affected the blood system, some directly engulfed the mana circulation, some damaged organs, particularly the heart and brain, and some attacked the nervous system. Some lived inside the body for a very long time, slowly eroding the person overall, and were very hard to get rid of.
Among these types, the most famous were those that attacked the bloodstream and Mana circulation. These two were very commonly available, and their antidotes were widely available as well. The rarer types were those that attacked the heart and specific organs; while they were very dangerous, they were easily curable with Healing magic. The next level included types that lived inside the body for a very long time, slowly killing the victim. Finally, the ultimate level was a poison that would kill quickly but was hard to get rid of.
The little girl could have been poisoned by any of these. If he wanted to find out the exact type, he would need more information. He would get those details in two days.
Max read until a little later than his regular sleeping time. When he could no longer put in 100% effort, he decided to sleep. Without full effort, reading just for the sake of reading was a waste of time.
