Chapter 405
In the biggest Shelter located within Wall Steel, the humans there had just received news of the Aberrants’ invasion.
Though such attacks were rare, incidents still occurred from time to time.
If it wasn’t an Aberrant assault, it would be a Gate opening somewhere across humanity’s territory.
Since the Blade family oversaw Alcatraz, they had developed a system capable of broadcasting major incidents to every human settlement almost instantly.
The news spread like wildfire.
A gigantic television hanging in the middle of the shelter displayed the emergency broadcast.
Although the exact locations of the attacks weren’t disclosed...
The world now knew one thing.
An Aberrant invasion was underway.
— Wait... What? Wall Steel is under attack?!
— I just hope it doesn’t reach here.
— Don’t worry. It can’t get to this shelter. This is one of Wall Steel’s most important locations, so we’re heavily gua—
BOOOOOM!
An earth-shaking explosion tore through the air.
A crimson laser beam burst through the ceiling with terrifying precision before striking the man mid-sentence.
His head exploded instantly.
A fountain of crimson blood sprayed into the air.
"...."
Silence.
For one horrifying second...
The entire shelter fell silent.
Everyone slowly turned towards the lifeless corpse.
Others instinctively looked upward to where the attack had come from.
A massive hole had been blasted through the ceiling.
And beyond it...
Hovering ominously in the sky...
Was a gigantic coal-black mothership.
The unmistakable signature of an Aberrant invasion.
— AAAAAAAAH!
A woman’s terrified scream shattered the silence.
The headless body collapsed onto the floor with a sickening thud.
Blood rapidly pooled beneath the corpse as she clutched both hands over her ears, trembling uncontrollably.
Before anyone could even react...
A barrage of laser beams rained through the shattered ceiling.
They pierced heads...
Tore through shoulders...
Ripped apart necks...
And blasted straight through chests.
The attacks came without rhythm or mercy.
They simply kept coming.
As though that alone wasn’t enough...
THUD!
BOOOOOM!
The ground outside shook violently.
Gigantic footsteps crashed against the earth one after another.
The entire shelter trembled.
Panic erupted.
People scattered in every direction.
Some desperately searched for cover.
Others sprinted deeper into the shelter, praying to escape the relentless rain of lasers.
Screams echoed throughout the massive structure.
Then...
The Aberrants landed.
Towering figures descended into the centre of the shelter, sinister grins stretching across their monstrous faces.
Unlike the panicked civilians...
The Corps members stationed inside reacted immediately.
This...
Was exactly what they had been trained for.
There was no time for fear.
No time to freeze.
Only action.
Click!
Click!
Click!
POW! POW! POW!
Mechanical rifles were cocked in rapid succession.
Moments later...
A relentless stream of laser-like bullets surged toward the invading Aberrants.
Ping!
Ping!
Ping!
The projectiles bounced harmlessly off the creatures’ rocky armour.
The Aberrants barely seemed to acknowledge that they were being attacked.
— Aaaaaah! Come on! We can’t let these bastards kill us! Everyone, FIRE!
Gunfire erupted from every direction inside the shelter.
Some Corps members maintained suppressive fire.
Others desperately ushered terrified civilians toward safer areas.
But it wasn’t easy.
Towering legs crashed through buildings with frightening ease, reducing reinforced structures to rubble beneath their overwhelming strength.
— Don’t give UP!
"Tch... This is annoying." One of the Aberrants muttered as it glared down at a Corps member who continued firing while slowly retreating.
Its lips curled into a cruel smile.
The next instant...
The creature exploded forward.
Its massive body blurred across the battlefield, instantly closing the distance between them.
Without the slightest hesitation...
Its enormous foot came crashing down.
BOOOOM!
The Corps members beneath it were crushed into a gruesome bloody pulp.
Bones shattered.
Limbs were torn apart.
Intestines spilled across the shattered floor alongside mangled flesh and pools of sticky crimson blood.
The shelter...
Had become a slaughterhouse.
Vaulting into the air, a Corps member cocked his rifle mid-flight and fired a precise shot toward an Aberrant’s head.
BANG!
The creature barely reacted.
With nothing more than the back of its hand, it casually swatted the bullet aside as though brushing away an insect.
Before the soldier could even land...
A second Aberrant vanished from its spot.
Whoosh!
The monstrous creature appeared directly before the airborne man, its gigantic hand snapping shut around his body.
The Corps member’s eyes widened.
Crunch!
With a single squeeze...
His body exploded into a bloody pulp.
Chunks of flesh and shattered bones rained onto the ruined streets below.
Nearby, a group of terrified civilians desperately sprinted toward what little cover remained.
They never made it.
The relentless laser beams swept across them.
"....."
When the crimson light faded...
Only their severed legs remained standing where they had been.
— Please... somebody... please save us! Please help us!
— Anybody! HELP!
The Aberrants erupted into thunderous laughter.
They wandered through the shelter as though taking a leisurely stroll, demolishing buildings and slaughtering humans alike.
Their invading force numbered roughly a hundred.
Within barely three minutes of landing...
The once-bustling shelter had been reduced to ruins.
Smoke billowed into the sky.
Flames spread from one shattered structure to another.
One Aberrant even charged toward the gigantic protective wall surrounding the shelter.
With a single punch...
BOOOOM!
The reinforced barrier exploded into countless fragments.
— AAAAAAH!
A man trapped beneath a collapsed building screamed in agony.
His lower body remained pinned beneath slabs of concrete as he helplessly watched laser beams carve through the shelter like divine punishment.
People were ripped apart without warning.
Without mercy.
Four Aberrants actively continued laying waste to everything around them.
The remaining monsters didn’t even bother joining the destruction.
Instead...
They folded their arms across their chests.
Watching.
Laughing.
As though this entire massacre was nothing more than entertainment.
A coliseum.
And humanity...
Nothing more than disposable toys.
One of the laser conductors slowly rotated.
Its crimson glow settled directly upon the trapped man.
Ready to erase the last traces of his existence.
Then...
The laser fire abruptly ceased.
Every Aberrant froze.
Confusion spread across their faces.
A second later...
The laser conductors erupted once again.
Dozens of beams shot into the sky with terrifying speed.
Yet...
For some reason...
No more humans were dying.
The Aberrants instinctively lifted their heads.
High above them...
A helicopter danced through the storm of crimson beams.
It twisted.
Rolled.
Banked.
Dodging every single attack with impossible precision.
The pilot manoeuvred the aircraft as though he had rehearsed this exact sequence countless times before.
Even while every laser focused on bringing it down...
The side door slowly slid open.
Standing at its edge...
Balanced effortlessly...
Was a lone man.
One hand rested casually inside his pocket.
The other stretched toward the gigantic mothership.
Moments later...
A brilliant white radiance engulfed his entire arm.
Power gathered so densely that the surrounding wind exploded into motion.
His black coat whipped violently behind him.
Yet...
Not a single strand of his perfectly styled hair moved.
The Aberrants narrowed their yellow eyes.
Who was this foolish human...
Bold enough to face them alone?
Jack calmly adjusted the glasses resting upon his nose.
His gaze settled upon the mothership.
Then...
BOOOOOOM!
A dazzling white sphere...
Nearly the size of a small car...
Exploded from his outstretched hand.
It screamed through the air with terrifying speed before colliding directly into the heart of the mothership.
The sky erupted.
An ear-splitting explosion engulfed the colossal vessel.
Fire burst outward in every direction as a section of the ship was violently blown apart.
The massive chunk of wreckage spun through the air before crashing directly into one of the Aberrants below.
CRASH!
Its rocky skull caved inward instantly from the sheer force of the impact.
Without saying a single word...
Jack calmly stepped forward.
One step.
Then another.
Then the last.
His body sliced through the sky like a released arrow.
Above him, the helicopter veered away to safety.
Hands still tucked inside his pockets...
His coat fluttered loudly around him.
Jack’s eyes remained locked onto the invading Aberrants.
One after another...
The towering monsters shifted into battle stances.
For the first time since arriving...
The invaders had encountered someone worthy of their attention.
