Chapter 406

Pffffffff—!

The Aspirants landed behind the duo that had initiated the attack.

Because they were fighting within the streets, some landed atop tilted buildings while others touched down on shattered roads and overturned vehicles.

Right before their eyes...

The Aberrant stood frozen.

A massive hole gaped through its abdomen.

Blue blood gushed from the wound like a broken fountain, splashing across the ruined street.

The towering creature staggered backwards.

Its enormous body swayed once...

Twice...

Then it crashed onto its back with a thunderous boom, sending a thick cloud of dust billowing into the air.

Silence briefly swept across the battlefield.

Even the remaining Aberrants couldn’t hide the surprise in their eyes.

Lincoln himself glanced toward Ray and Berg.

Disbelief was written plainly across his face.

Ray and Berg exchanged a quick look.

The moment Lincoln had given the order...

Neither of them had hesitated.

There had been no discussion.

No strategy.

No planning whatsoever.

They had simply launched themselves forward and unleashed their strongest attacks at the exact same moment.

And the result...

A One-Spined Aberrant...

Was dead.

Yes...

One-Spined Aberrants occupied the lowest rank within the Aberrant hierarchy.

Even so...

They weren’t opponents a pair of newly graduated Aspirants were supposed to eliminate so effortlessly.

Experienced Meta-humans could achieve such a feat.

But two teenagers?

The very same rank of Aberrant that had once forced Berg to flee with his tail tucked between his legs.

The same rank that had nearly sent Ray to an early grave on three different occasions.

Well...

To be fair...

He wasn’t nearly as strong back then.

Still...

Ray lowered his gaze toward his hands.

Slowly...

He clenched and unclenched his fists.

A small smile unconsciously tugged at the corners of his lips.

So...

This was the level he had finally reached.

Unfortunately...

That moment of satisfaction lasted only an instant.

WHIRRRRRRRRRR!

A loud mechanical hum echoed overhead.

Every head snapped toward the sky.

The gigantic mothership was charging another attack.

Everyone immediately recognised what was about to happen.

Another rain of laser beams.

As though that wasn’t enough...

Every remaining Aberrant shifted its attention toward the Aspirants.

"KILL THEM!"

One of the towering monsters roared.

Without the slightest hesitation...

They charged.

The streets trembled beneath hundreds of gigantic footsteps.

At the very same moment...

The laser conductors beneath the mothership began glowing brightly.

They were seconds away from firing.

Tap.

Tap.

"I’m not strong enough to face the Aberrants, but I can take care of the mothership! Focus on the Aberrants!" Van shouted as he tapped the glowing chest piece strapped firmly against his body.

Ray instinctively turned toward his best friend.

Concern immediately filled his eyes.

Before he could stop him...

Van launched into the air.

Hundreds of mechanical spiders burst from the glowing chest piece with astonishing speed.

They crawled across his body like a living swarm.

Layer upon layer of machinery rapidly wrapped around him, encasing him in gleaming mechanical armour.

Ray’s lips parted.

He wanted to call out.

To stop whatever reckless plan Van had in mind.

But...

There wasn’t time.

"Brace yourselves," Lincoln ordered.

The artillery vehicles immediately rotated their cannons toward the charging Aberrants.

Without delay...

Another barrage of blazing energy erupted across the battlefield.

To everyone’s horror...

The Aberrants simply weaved through the attacks.

They twisted.

Sidestepped.

Burst forward.

Dodging the devastating blasts as though they were merely playing a game of laser tag.

"Leave them to us and just focus on the mothership!" Trisha ordered through the comm device.

Without waiting for anyone’s response...

Compressed gas hissed from her VMS boots.

She shot forward like an arrow.

"Come on!" Kai shouted before kicking off into the air as well.

One after another...

The Aspirants surged into battle.

[Thunder Step Activated]

Purple lightning exploded around the soles of Ray’s boots.

BOOM!

The street beneath him cracked apart from the force.

In a blur of crackling lightning...

Ray blasted forward.

Within moments...

He had already overtaken the others who had moved before him.

And within a single second...

Ray was already airborne.

Face to face with the first Aberrant.

The towering creature froze for the briefest instant.

Even so...

Its reactions were still frighteningly fast.

Its gigantic claws lashed through the air with enough force to tear steel apart.

Whoosh!

Ray vanished.

The razor-sharp claws sliced through nothing but empty air.

BOOM!

The violent swing alone created a shockwave that echoed across the battlefield.

Before the Aberrant could even recover...

Two arrows streaked toward its face.

Instinctively, it leaned backward.

The arrows narrowly missed its head before embedding themselves deep within the wall of a nearby building.

At that exact moment...

The battlefield erupted.

The remaining Aspirants finally collided with the rest of the Aberrants.

Explosions...

Metal...

Lightning...

Ice...

Flames...

The once-quiet streets instantly descended into utter chaos.

Ray reappeared directly above the Aberrant.

In his grasp...

A spear forged entirely from crackling lightning.

Without hesitation...

He drove it downward.

Crack!

BAAANG!

The lightning spear screamed through the air before slamming into the creature’s neck.

The attack was simply too fast.

Before the Aberrant could even react...

The spear pierced straight through its neck and burst out the opposite side in an explosion of blue blood and crackling electricity.

Just then...

The comm device attached to every Aspirant crackled to life.

Lincoln’s calm voice echoed into their ears.

"And remember. To immediately kill them, you have to target their hearts which is in a random position. Or you use an overwhelming force of attack like Berg and Ray’s. Otherwise, the more you injure them, the stronger and faster they become."

The warning had barely ended when Ray kicked against the air beneath him.

His body shot even higher into the sky.

Perfect timing.

Brown claws tore through the exact spot where he had been a heartbeat earlier.

Landing lightly atop a nearby building, Ray immediately shifted his stance.

Beep!

Beep!

Beep!

The Aberrant’s head snapped toward the structure.

The two arrows lodged inside the wall suddenly began flashing.

Then...

BOOOOOOM!

The enchanted arrows detonated simultaneously.

A massive section of the building exploded apart.

Thousands of kilograms of shattered concrete and steel hurtled directly toward the Aberrant.

The creature barely reacted in time.

Crossing both arms before its face...

CRAAASH!

The collapsing debris smashed into its guard with overwhelming force.

Its enormous body slid backwards across the street.

Its heels carved deep trenches into the asphalt as it fought to remain standing.

The instant it regained its footing...

Its muscular tail whipped around with murderous force.

Whoosh!

It struck nothing.

Only empty air.

Because...

Far above it...

Ray had already moved.

Suspended in mid-air with both daggers crossed before him...

He descended like a bolt of purple lightning.

Slash!

A crisscross slash carved across the back of the Aberrant’s neck.

Rocky flesh split open.

Hidden beneath the armour...

A crystal came into view.

And nestled within that crystal...

A strange organ pulsed rhythmically.

’Found ya.’

BOOOOOM!

A deafening explosion echoed overhead.

Ray’s head instinctively jerked toward the sky.

The mothership had unleashed another devastating barrage of laser beams.

Every single one...

Was converging on a lone figure flying through the air.

Van!
