Chapter 440
There were about twelve drones panning across the entire area where the Aspirants were fighting.
Eight belonged to the Corps, with Mina observing the whole situation from the control room.
The remaining four belonged to Johnny Crimes.
And through those twelve drones, Lincoln’s near-death situation had been captured clearly.
Every single person watching could see that the Sergeant was moments away from losing his life.
But just a second before he could meet his maker—
Something blurred forward.
Everything happened so quickly that nobody could properly register what had happened.
And the next thing they knew, the creature’s head had been blown apart.
Its massive body crashed into one of its comrades, sending both creatures tumbling backward like stones skipping across water.
"...."
Ray landed in front of Lincoln.
His back was straight.
Lightning crackled around his arms.
The fur that had covered them moments ago was nowhere to be seen.
Due to his incredible perception, Ray had already sensed the additional drones hovering around the battlefield.
And he suspected that they weren’t from the Corps.
So he had been careful about what he showed.
It had taken him a long time to reach Lincoln.
But during that time, he had also been able to assist his friends through his comm device.
That was because he wanted to gather more EXP.
He had been taking down Abberants one after another, cutting through their numbers faster than most people could even comprehend.
There was no time to hold back.
He had unleashed everything he had while making his way here.
And so far—
[Enemies Defeated: 40/50]
The jump was crazy.
And it showed just how seriously Ray had been fighting these blasted creatures that had invaded his second home.
The remaining Abberants were stunned.
Their attention shifted toward him.
Ray didn’t care about their gazes.
He turned around and faced the Sergeant, who was still on his backside.
"You okay, sir?"
He stretched out his hand.
Lincoln stared at the offered hand.
Then he looked at the boy standing before him.
After a brief moment, he grabbed Ray’s hand and allowed the boy to pull him to his feet.
"What are y—"
A thunderous whirring sound suddenly echoed through the air.
Then came a loud screech.
It sounded almost static.
The noise was unbearably loud.
It ripped through the battlefield and forced everyone to cover their ears in pain.
Felix and Ray were hit the hardest.
Their sensitive hearing made the sound almost unbearable.
Blood began pouring from their ears as they desperately covered them, trying to protect their eardrums from the assault.
The entire battlefield seemed to pause as one.
The sound only grew more intense.
Even the Abberants were affected.
The creatures struggled through the pain, temporarily unable to attack the stunned humans.
"Wh-What is going on?!"
[My Head Hurts: Damn! What the hell? My ears! The fuck are you doing, Bonny? Fix your mics!]
"Ugh... my ears!"
An Aspirant cried out while still caught in the middle of an attack.
But even though he had been affected, the Abberant in front of him wasn’t going to waste the opportunity.
The creature pushed through the pain.
It bolted toward the suspended boy.
Then—
CLAMP!
Its jaws closed around him.
The boy’s body was bitten clean in half.
Blood splattered through the air.
All around the battlefield, the same thing began happening.
The Abberants fought through the unbearable sound and started tearing the Aspirants apart one after another.
Then—
"Did I ask you to attack them?"
".....?!"
"...."
A voice.
Calm.
Cold.
The Abberants froze.
Then—
BOOOOM!
A blinding light descended from the Abberant mothership.
The impact shook the air with tremendous force.
Every Abberant immediately halted.
The light continued burning beneath the mothership as the painful sound slowly began to fade.
The humans on the battlefield gradually regained their senses.
Ray and Felix’s damaged ear tissues began repairing themselves at an impressive rate.
Slowly, everyone looked toward the bright light.
It was beginning to dim.
[Viewer 123: What’s going on?]
As if answering the viewer’s question, the light finally vanished.
A lone figure stood beneath the floating mothership.
The drones immediately panned toward the figure, trying to get a closer look.
Ray didn’t need to move.
From where he stood, he could already see the newcomer clearly.
It was an Abberant.
There was no doubt about it.
But unlike the towering nine-metre-tall Abberants, this one was...
Smaller.
Barely three metres tall.
It lacked the overwhelming size of its brethren.
Yet somehow, its presence eclipsed every single one of them.
Its body was lean and elegantly proportioned, stripped of the excessive muscle mass common among ordinary Abberants.
Every movement carried an unnatural grace.
Her slender frame gave the impression that every ounce of strength had been compressed into a far deadlier form.
Though unmistakably monstrous, there was an almost feminine elegance to her physique that made her all the more unsettling.
Unlike the rough brown rock armour worn by the lesser Abberants, this one’s body was encased in smooth plates of pale silver chitin that shimmered beneath the light like polished metal.
Each segment fused seamlessly with the next, giving the illusion that her body had been sculpted rather than born.
The silver armour reflected her surroundings with a faint metallic sheen, hinting at a durability that far surpassed ordinary stone.
Flowing from the back of her head was a cascade of long, lustrous silver hair that reached past her waist.
It swayed gently with every movement, as though drifting beneath invisible currents.
The silky strands contrasted beautifully against the cold metallic armour covering her body.
Despite belonging to a creature born solely for destruction, the hair gave her an unsettling beauty that felt completely out of place.
Her face possessed faintly feminine contours.
A smooth jawline, high cheekbones, and a narrow chin gave her features an almost regal elegance.
Yet there wasn’t an ounce of flesh or softness to them.
They were sculpted entirely from silver chitin, making her appear like a beautiful statue brought to life.
The only thing that shattered the illusion were her glowing golden eyes.
Their narrow pupils radiated an intelligence that far surpassed any ordinary Abberant.
Her elongated arms ended in razor-sharp obsidian claws, each slender finger tipped with talons capable of rending reinforced steel with effortless precision.
Unlike the mindless savagery displayed by the lesser Abberants, those piercing golden eyes moved with purpose.
Calmly observing everything before her.
There was calculation behind that gaze.
She wasn’t simply looking.
She was assessing.
Behind her...
Five jagged bone spines protruded directly from the center of her back, aligned neatly along her spine from just below the nape of her neck to the small of her back.
Rather than extending far from her body, each spine jutted outward only a short distance, giving the impression of a natural dorsal crest instead of oversized protrusions.
Each spine tapered into a razor-sharp point.
Its smooth ivory surface was streaked with thin veins of crimson energy that pulsed rhythmically like a heartbeat.
Though compact, they carried an unmistakable menace.
Their edges appeared sharp enough to slice through steel with the slightest contact.
The crimson glow flowing through the spines bathed the silver armour surrounding them in an eerie light.
The air behind her shimmered faintly beneath the overwhelming energy they constantly emitted.
They weren’t decorative.
They were as much a weapon as the obsidian claws at the ends of her fingers.
And in those claws...
She grasped a body tightly.
[Jimmy_Parker: Do my eyes fucking deceive me, or do I lack the ability to count anymore?]
[Proud Hater: Five Spines?! It’s a fucking Five-Spined Abberant?!]
[Bonny’s Lover: Bonny, get out of there now. My love, that place ain’t safe for you. RUN!]
Johnny watched the flood of comments rush past, but he wasn’t even paying attention.
His eyes remained fixed on the screen displaying the number of spines on the Abberant’s back.
He kept counting.
Again.
And again.
As if, with each count, the number would somehow come out differently.
But it didn’t.
Five.
The whole world was shaken by what they were being shown.
Even Mina at the control tower felt every hair on her body rise.
She quickly grabbed her microphone and yelled down the communication channel.
"It’s a Five-Spined Abberant! Guys, it’s a freaking Five-Spined!"
The warning crashed through the comm devices every Aspirant wore.
And finally, they could all share in the panic spreading throughout the world.
"Fi-Fi..."
"Ba... thump... Ba... thump..."
Ray’s heart was racing.
But not because of the revelation of what the Abberant was.
It was because of what she was holding in her grasp.
It was a human body.
Bloodied.
Battered.
The uniform they wore was almost completely unrecognisable beneath the blood and damage.
"Wh-wha..."
Ray couldn’t find his voice.
His trembling finger slowly pointed toward the human in the creature’s grasp.
The Five-Spined Abberant tilted her head.
Then she glanced at the human in her hand.
Lifting his head slightly, she raised a brow.
"You know this one?"
She paused.
"Tsk. Tried infiltrating our mothership, and I thought he was strong. But it turns out he was just a weakling."
"....!!!"
Ray’s eyes stretched wide in immense horror.
The features of the person’s face finally came into view.
His heart seemed to skip a dozen beats.
Everything around him felt distant.
The battlefield.
The Abberants.
The people shouting.
Even the sounds coming through his comm device.
None of it mattered.
All Ray could see was that bloodied face.
That familiar face.
"V-V-Van?!"
